@Allergictoironing I feel your pain over trying to give your cats less to eat than they consider their entitlement.

Emerald was on a weight management dry food. She refused to eat the very expensive wet food. The vet then told us to give her her usual wet food, but much less of it.

But the looks of reproach! She was 6.5kg at her heaviest, but she did gradually lose some weight.

The idiot sisters are exclusively on dry food. Approx 50g in the morning and evening. They don't eat human food either. Wednesday was most confused when she was given wet food after her dental work 🤣🤣 all ok tho because Gomez ate it for her 🤣🤣

HouseofHolbein · 24/10/2024 20:58

They are all below 4kg and pretty healthy on it.

KeziaOAP · 24/10/2024 21:31

Very remiss of me haven't paid "cat tax"

Oh they are beautiful Kezia! What are their names?

KeziaOAP · 24/10/2024 21:47

Wedgwood is the ragdoll, Leanora's mum was siamese, dad was a ragdoll X, possibly persian, they're house cats.

Was idly googling after an operation/undergoing treatment, and came across Grumpy's adventures of TC - very therapeutic.

RumNotRun · 24/10/2024 22:11

Raven is..um... Rubenesque and only really eats dry food. She'll have a few mouthfuls of wet food but I think if I only fed them wet food she would go on hunger strike. She's the only one who is somewhat rotund though so I don't want to restrict the dry as the others like to graze on it through the day.

Toad and Lex are very good at doing the puss in boots eyes whenever they feel like they're being starved. In true cat style this is often performed right next to a full plate of food.

Allergictoironing · 24/10/2024 22:15

I used to feed the RC Indoor before Tobias came home, but he was a bit on the overweight side (well quite a lot really) so I moved them onto the Neutered Satiety balance.

He was gradually losing weight on that, but then the stomach issues appeared (his poo was always softish, but then got much wetter). So I started them on the RC Gastrointestinal & onto grain free wet. And the weight PILED on. I then saw the small print on the side of the gastrointestinal feed that said "helps maintain a healthy weight" which presumably means helps cats who aren't getting the nutrients from they food to absorb it. So the weight went on again. I'm now trying them on the Hills Biome, and according to the guide on the packet they are now getting less than the recommended amount for 2 cats between them.

And of course with them sharing everything, Girlcat started to put on the ounces. At least she didn't balloon, like when Boycat had to have CKD food! But a gradual increase in girth became apparent on the scales at her MoT in May...

Only just caught up on the thread and seen about poor Basil. Matt’s urinary problems have probably funded our vet to go on a worldwide cruise…
Urinary food the majority of the time and no longer having the stress of living with ddog since she died in Jan seem to have made a huge difference but I still breath a sign of relief when I see him have a huge wee.
His weight however makes the rest of the cats on here look scrawny. I think it was 8.9kg last winter, down from 9.8 the previous time.
Socks on the other hand is very slim and just not particularly interested in food most of the time.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 25/10/2024 08:12

No real update yet. Had this text this morning so will need to wait to speak to the vet.
a quick update to let you know we have had a smooth night with Basil. He hasn't wanted to eat with us, but otherwise he's been a great patient. Someone from the day team will contact you later today to organise a plan for Basil. Kind regards

HouseofHolbein · 25/10/2024 08:32

Hope everything is ok with him @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats. It's such a worry isn't it.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 25/10/2024 09:52

Just had a call. He'll be kept in again all day and tonight and will be getting his bladder flushed again several times today. All being well they'll take the catheter out this evening and assuming he can then pee by himself we'll get him back tomorrow.

TheShellBeach · 25/10/2024 09:55

Oh poor old Basil.
He must be so fed up.
None of mine ever eat at the vet's either. They always head straight for their bowls when they get home.

NMS - just thought he looked rather endearing this morning.

I think you will find he IS your squirrel. He looks decidedly chubby as well but that might be because he doesn't have a stripey tiger chasing him anymore.

Wishing Basil a speedy recovery ❤

Reckon you could two cats in that box If they tried harder 🤣

Breadcat24 · 25/10/2024 15:32

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats I cannot believe how much I am willing your cat Basil to pee
It makes me sound like some kind of perverse weirdo

Thank you - we are doing the same 😁.

Well technically there's a bit of space where her 4th leg should be. I'm surprised that Toad hasn't tried to climb in there though,he does not respect personal space when it comes to the other cats.

I am also willing Basil to wee. UTIs/urine crystals (NOT STIs) in cats frighten me because of everything Ali had to go through. I hope Basil feels all our well wishes and it somehow magically helps him.

Pudmyboy · 25/10/2024 16:11

Another well-weeing wisher for Basil, cannot imagine how he is coping, at least with humans, procedures can be explained and side effects discussed. Is he on any sedation to allow the catheter to remain in situ? Poor Basil, and poor Grumpy family, how stressful for you all 😿

learieonthewildmoor · 26/10/2024 06:14

Basil is one of my favourite Mumsnet cats. #loveBasil

Inks42 · 26/10/2024 08:32

Wishing Basil to get better here too. It must be strange not having him in the house.
All our girls hope Basil recovers too (I clearly speak for them in this regard and have not made it up even if they have no idea who Basil is)

Basil is back 😁.
He had a wee at the vets last night and they are happy to discharge him. Obviously we need to keep an eye on him (and his toiletting), and the number of drugs he needs this week will make him rattle.
He seems very pleased to see us and went straight to his food when he got in, so looking good so far.
Total bill is nearer £3.5k rather than £5k so I'm thankful for small mercies. 😲
Picture of him with his shaved legs.
