Someone thought my dog was an XL bully

walking towards us on the pavement and loudly telling her kids to be careful of that awful XLA bulley dog and walk away from it...

I wouldn't mind so much if she looked a bit more like a bulldog of almost any variety but our lovely dog is a Sprocker..

say it just underlined for me how negative some people are becoming about dogs with all the recent news

Obviously it’s not great if you’re being accused of owning a banned dog. Perhaps the mum had bad eyesight and just saw a large ish dog!

It’s not a bad idea to teach children to be wary of dogs they encounter in public-not to go too close or attempt to pat or stroke them.
So I think that (be careful) approach is a positive.

Some people are very strange;she might have a fear of dogs and tells her kids every dog is a XL bully to deliberately scare them away from dogs.

I've got a sprocker and no way does it look like a bully dog. Maybe she had eyesight problems.

I briefly thought a (silver!) lab was an xl bully and felt nervous for my dog until I realised my mistake. I'm struggling to see how a spaniel could be mistaken for one though.

Doesn’t help you any... but people who aren’t into dogs do not know dog breeds, I mean, a sprocker is particularly random, but a lot of the dogs people think are xl bullies aren’t.

I could understand how someone unfamiliar with dogs could get a cane corso, mastiff and XL Bully mixed up, but a sprocker?! Idiots gonna idiot.

I’ve said loads of times before, but, my last dog was a Rottweiler who looked exactly like a Rottweiler - got asked fairly regularly if he was a lab, occasionally a Doberman and once a mastiff 🤷‍♀️

I know someone who had a harlequin Great Dane, she said at least once a week someone asked if it was a Dalmatian 🤣

I have a wee pug and someone asked me with a straight face if he was a doberman. I didn't know if he was joking or what was going on so I kind of smiled politely and kept walking. Another memorable one was someone gushing over him and telling me how much they love Chinese bulldogs like him Confused

yeah, agree, people have heard the words 'xl bully dog' and the only part they understood is 'dog'.

My DH told me that there were two Beagles in the next caravan to ours. They were actually cocker spaniels. 😂 I honestly wouldn’t worry @listsandbudgets some people haven’t got a clue about dog breeds.

it just underlined for me how negative some people are becoming about dogs with all the recent news It is not just because of 'news' it is also because in everyday life dogs have become more visible, more audible and more of a PITA. It's just accepted now that someone will have a 'badly looked after and therefore badly behaved' dog on the bus, in the shops, in the children's play area.

Obviously visibly sprocker = \ = XL bully.

I often get asked my dogs breed, and people get it wrong all the time. She's a mixed breed( 4 in dna). One breed is dominant, though. Although large, she doesn't usually get taken for bully breeds as she is floofy and very attractive. Generally, a lot of people don't know their arse from their elbow. I can't see how anyone can see xl Bully in a spaniel. Given that she said that, I would assume it's the idiot version of human.

We have a labrador/border collie cross. Not sure he could be mistaken for anything else as he appears to be made up of leftover component parts. Body and bark are all lab. Tail, head, legs are pure border collie.
