Someone thought my dog was an XL bully

walking towards us on the pavement and loudly telling her kids to be careful of that awful XLA bulley dog and walk away from it...

I wouldn't mind so much if she looked a bit more like a bulldog of almost any variety but our lovely dog is a Sprocker..

say it just underlined for me how negative some people are becoming about dogs with all the recent news

thank you for this!

I regularly walk around my neighbourhood and into town. I cannot go anywhere without encountering at least 5-10 dogs. And I'd say about 80% of the dogs are off lead (and this is not in a park - usually on a pathway). About half of those run over and try to jump on me. It's very frustrating (and sometimes unnerving). Without fail, the owners smile at me and say "oh, don't worry, he/she is friendly." I actually don't care if your dog is friendly - I don't want it jumping on me.

I don't hate dogs - I love all animals (am vegan for this reason) - but I know very little about them and choose to avoid where possible.

Agree, OP, that your dog looks nothing like an XL bully, but the woman isn't a muppet for not having that knowledge, even if you think she should.

Exactly this. I'm sick to death of some, (not all, but some) dog owners being so inconsiderate and thoughtless. Thinking that everybody else should be interested in their dogs, and love their dogs, and not be pissed off that they run up to them and jump up them, when they're stupid enough to let them off their lead ... Some dogs start jumping up people, and barking at them, and running around them, and the owners don't give a shit!

I went on a walk on a country path a few weeks ago, and this couple had their dog off the lead. (German Shepherd cross.) I was about 30 to 50 feet ahead of this couple, and this dog just kept running up to me, and running around me and just stopping me from walking. It was happening for about 10 minutes and it was really, really pissing me off. These owners did absolutely nothing about it. Just ignored me totally, and the fact their mutt was basically tripping me up half the time!

This particular dog wasn't super threatening - though it did keep barking. But it was just irritating - like an annoying toddler. In the end. I just waited for them to walk past and waited 10 minutes for them to go further up the path with their dog. And then within about 15 minutes I caught up with them again - and had the dog running around me again. Put your dog on a lead FFS! Hmm I simply couldn't do my walk properly as he kept running around me and stopping me, and almost tripped me... quite a few times too!

I'm also sick to death of people with big aggressive/aggressive looking dogs thinking it's absolutely fucking hilarious that people are scared of their dog. And they also laugh and mock when people pick up their small dogs because they're scared the big dogs are going to attack them or their dog. They mock and deride people, and say they are 'crazy.' Hmm (There's a couple of people like that on this thread to be honest - thinking it's totes hilaire that people are scared, and bothered by peoples dogs off their lead.)

Saying shit like 'oh he is just a big old softy. He won't hurt you!' and laughing and mocking people who are afraid - (or just don't want the bastard thing running up to them and around them,) is utterly unacceptable. I'm telling you now you do not have full control of that dog, so don't even pretend you do have it. I used to like dogs when I was a lot younger, (we used to have dogs when I was a child,) but some dog owners have become so poor now, with absolutely no thought or consideration for anyone else but themselves, that it's put me right off dogs.

Even the other week when I was in a woodland out for a walk, there was a woman walking around with 3 dogs. ALL LOOSE. Despite multiple signs saying 'keep dogs on a LEAD!' They were running rings around me and barking at me. I was actually quite shaken as they were quite aggressive. She came out with the stupid predictable line... 'oooh they won't hurt you!' How do you fucking know you stupid bint? Hmm

Within a few minutes of them spending 2 or 3 minutes running around me barking, I quickly left the woodland and went back to my car, as I was so pissed off and actually quite afraid to carry on walking in there with these 3 dogs loose. If they had all piled on me and started attacking me, she wouldn't have been able to do a THING about it.

Did she care? Did she hell!

I have a white German Shepherd. Kids think she's a snow wolf, and adults think she's some kind of golden retriever cross 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

The comments like “stupid women” and “muppet” to me demonstrates how selfish rude and totally dog obsessed some dog owners are (I’m late 50’s and owned dogs all my life). Wake up people many people justifiably don’t like dogs and know absolutely nothing about dogs and don’t want to like dogs or know anything about them and find dogs in cafes, shops, children’s playgrounds, parks, off lead walking down the street and in close proximity distressing.. This is their prerogative. As owners we need to be aware of this and act accordingly.

Exactly this!

My neighbour point blank told me she wouldn’t put her dog on a leash in our flat building despite it running full speed at me , jumping on me and scratching my thigh. None of my friends who have dogs behave like this so I just couldn’t understand her mentality.

I reported her to the housing management for having an out of control dog and they dealt with it thankfully and all dog owners have now been asked to leash their dogs around the flat.

It’s common sense when you have a hyper dog, to leash it - absolutely wild that my neighbour thought it was acceptable to tell me she “couldn’t help it” if her dog jumped at me 😂

Is that the look he gives them? 😂 Like he's thinking 'are you on glue?'

😂😂
He's a very expressive boy!
@Spudlet here's another outfit (he does have others apart Christmas I promise, but that's all I have on the computer at work)

Oh wow! Also lab/border collie cross?

Yes, we think so! She's a rescue, so we aren't sure but we think lab/collie cross (she's a herder) but her coat is super fluffy and the groomer says triple coated! Maybe there's something else in there - I'd like to do a DNA test but I'm not sure how useful they actually are.

@Leeeeeeeeeeeeeee He’s so beautiful 😍

And all that is absolutely fine. Nobody's saying everyone has to love (or even like) other people's dogs.

But why do people who clearly know nothing about dogs go around making uninformed (and often dangerous) assumptions about them then? The woman in the OP had absolutely no need to scare her kids into thinking a spaniel is an XL bully - she could just say "be careful of the dog". No need to even bring the breed into it, surely? Confused

Yellowsubmarineunderthesea · 05/10/2023 15:11

@margotrose Maybe she genuinely thought it was an XL Bully ? As has been repeatedly said said above, many many people don't know one breed from another but the lady obviously felt for whatever reason, she needed to warn her children

Photos of XL bullies are all over the news and none of them look anything like a spaniel.

By all means, warn your child of the dog if you want, but there's no need to make things up when you clearly don't know what you're talking about Wink

Does it matter if she "makes things up" as I said above I own a very rare breed even knowledgable doggy people speculate on what sort of dog he is; "is it an X crossed with a Y?" I usually just smile and say "no it's a Z". Most doggy people have never even heard of the breed and frankly I don't give a shit, they can even assume its an XL bully for all I care, what difference does it make to either the dog or me? None.

We have a Shiba Inu, we were once in the park and he was sat on my husbands knee. A woman started screaming that there was a rabid fox, as in screaming her head off, gesticulating etc and warning everyone away. She meant our dog who in fact a dog, wearing a dogs harness and sat on my husbands lap.

I did once meet someone who saw a brown cow and thought it was a horse, because cows are black and white…

NosnowontheScottishhills · 05/10/2023 17:35

DirectionToPerfection · 05/10/2023 11:04

We'll have to agree to disagree then. I don't think your example is comparable at all, most people don't encounter dairy cows on a regular basis when going about their lives.

Parks all over the country have spaniels, labradors, pugs, etc, walked in them every day of the week.I do think it's completely OTT and very silly of this woman to be kicking off about a bloody spaniel being a dangerous XL Bully (apart from anything else it could unnecessarily frighten others including children). I also don't see why OP and others shouldn't roll their eyes and laugh about it.

It depends where you live here cows way out number dogs every other field has a bovine of some description in it: dairy cows, dairy heifers, beef cows with a calf at foot, beef bullocks beef bulls. In contrast I rarely meet another dog when our walking. I don’t roll my eyes and laugh at my friend who can’t see that 200 placid dairy cows are unlikely to trample her, I have told her that dairy cows are usually pretty harmless she’s watched me walk through the middle of them but I understand that she doesn’t like cows she’s scared of them and has no intention of going on a crash cow identification/understand cow body language course.
Personally I think cows are fab but I understand that she doesn’t.
The same principle applies to dogs horses pigs elephants or spiders no one is under any obligation to know about these animals and they can assume what ever they like. As owners of dogs we should understand this and try hard not inflict our pets on those who don’t like them and also not ridicule this who don’t like, understand or who are unable to identify what the particular of dog we own is.

WhileMyDishwasherGentlyWeeps · 05/10/2023 17:53

I used to tell my kids to avoid any dog we saw (unless it was so tiny that it couldn’t be any threat). It’s not terror of dogs, allergy or even dislike of dogs - though I’m not a fan of dogs generally, and even less a fan of some dog owners - but I just have no idea how any dog will behave.

Mis-calling a dog an XL Bully is neither here not there. Your dog wouldn’t have been insulted. Were you?

Well, no, it doesn't matter but if you are going to make things up, don't be surprised when people laugh or call you out on it.

If you don't know the breed of dog, just say so. No need to make something up.

But why does it matter if someone makes something up about your dog?
People endlessly make things up about my dog assigning all sorts of breeds or x breeds to him I never laugh or call people out on it. I usually politely correct them if they seem genuinely interested but on other occasions just smile and say nothing. What difference does it make to me or my dog if someone assumes it’s a “collie crossed with a schnauzer” or a “Jack Russell crossed with a spaniel”, or the breed he actually is. And on the exceedingly rare occasions his breed is recognised if someone said “oh those are really dangerous” do I care not one jot because they generally aren’t and he definitely isn’t. Thick as a brick yes dangerous no.

Mollyplop999 · 05/10/2023 18:15

Omg I've never seen a dog that looks less like an xl bully than yours 😆. Some folk really aren't right.

margotrose · 05/10/2023 18:16

As I said, it doesn't matter, but people should be expected to be called out if they're going to go around talking bollocks imo.

Edited

If it doesn’t matter why call someone out if they go round “talking bollocks” it just seems unnecessary and rude.
Im not trying to be goady I just don’t get it. I work in a very specialised field but many people think they know about it and talk totally unresearched shit about it all the time I just ignore it, unless specifically asked. I know about cows and a lot about horses no one talks more bollocks than horse people again if I hear people talking crap I just ignore it as long as it’s not directly impacting on me and my horses who cares? Why be so unpleasant to people? Some people genuinely don’t know about dogs and dogs breeds they obviously have chosen not to know so what?
