walking towards us on the pavement and loudly telling her kids to be careful of that awful XLA bulley dog and walk away from it...

I wouldn't mind so much if she looked a bit more like a bulldog of almost any variety but our lovely dog is a Sprocker..

say it just underlined for me how negative some people are becoming about dogs with all the recent news

I’ve got a golden and people regularly ask if he’s a Labrador or a spaniel. I think so many dogs just look the same to non-dog people

Spudlet · 05/10/2023 07:32

I have a Labrador. People are always asking me what breed he is, then looking at me slightly askance with a ‘really?!’ when I tell them… we haven’t had anyone call him an XL bully yet though.

DominoRules · 05/10/2023 07:35

@Spudlet he looks just like my friends lab, gorgeous!

Someone did the same to me the other day and asked if I was ‘sure’ my dog was a Springer, they didn’t look convinced!!

@DominoRules 😂

All the dogs posted here are gorgeous 😍 @listsandbudgets your dog looks so much like my old boy, he has the same eyes 😊

I have a wee pug and someone asked me with a straight face if he was a doberman. I didn't know if he was joking or what was going on so I kind of smiled politely and kept walking. Another memorable one was someone gushing over him and telling me how much they love Chinese bulldogs like him Confused

We call our pug a Chinese Mastiff 😂

@HappiestSleeping This one is for you.

brilliant user name by the way. Its 5.50am and I'd love to be sleeping but the stupid cats woke me up

Dogs like that should be banned! He looks terrifying! 😂

Prescottdanni123 · 05/10/2023 09:09

Must have been a mumsnetter. I support an xl bully ban, but people like her are going to be an issue when the ban is in place. So much police time is going to be wasted by people who don't know the difference between a dog, their elbow and their arse are going to be reporting an extremely dangerous, massive xl bully (their next door neighbours smaller than average, soft as butter daschund)

margotrose · 05/10/2023 07:07

I was once asked if my beagle was a collie Hmm

My KC reg border terrier, with a CC dad who is now in full coat was very definitely a patterdale terrier yesterday 😂No amount of explaining would convince the owner otherwise.

I think it's the colour. We have a red lab as well, and I get asked what breed he is relatively often.

We used to have a St Bernard. Unsurprisingly, he was an absolute magnet for everyone, adults and kids alike.

Someone asked what type of dog he was, I said St Bernard. He said, "oh I thought so, that's a type of Alsatian isn't it?". Errm, no. "Are you sure?" Yup. "Hmm, I'm going to look that up later. " Great, you do that.

As for your terrifying monster satan dog though @listsandbudgets EVERYONE RUN!!!!! SAVE YOURSELVES!!!!!! (Save yourselves from being prodded with a damp teddy when the dog has decided that he needs to play, that is 🤭).

NosnowontheScottishhills · 05/10/2023 09:22

I really don't think you can accuse someone of being a high functioning muppet because they don't know one dog breed from another. If you own a dog and also post on this section on MN with pictures anecdotes about your dog its likely that you're very dog knowledgable. But many people aren't my ex neighbour had a serious dog phobia I doubt she could identify any breed.
I used to work on dairy farms so can identify cattle breeds/ages/sex etc. We have a dairy farm in my village my friend who doesn't know anything about cows wont walk through the field when the cows are in it because she's read stories about cows attacking walkers. I see dairy cows that see people and dogs every day are handled by people every day and not a calf in sight. Yes the younger ones are curious about the dogs and might follow us for a few yards but the old girls barely even move their ears and none are likely to attack any one. But she just see cows and thinks they are going to attack walkers with dogs. It's the same principle and my friend is not a high functioning muppet.
I believe as owners it is our responsibility to try ensure our dogs don't upset others not everyone is dog knowledgable or likes or wants dogs in close proximity.

NosnowontheScottishhills · 05/10/2023 09:25

Should just add as far as Im aware Ive never see an XL bully and had to google one to see what they looked like when the the future ban was announced!
I do see lots of sprockers, springers and cocker spaniels 😀

MySugarBabyLove · 05/10/2023 09:26

Stupid woman.

I have a guide dog. I was once staying at a hotel, and on my way out of the room a woman was going into the room opposite and was telling her children off for something. She then said “if you don’t behave then that dog is going to bite you.” I wasted no time in telling her that telling children that a guide dog is going to bite them was a stupid thing to do, not only because the dog doesn’t bite, but because it makes it worse for guide dog owners who face rejection and discrimination on a daily basis.

lilyblue5 · 05/10/2023 09:29

Patterdale terrier. Border cross (definitely a cross because long legs - nope - should have long legs). I had a proper mongrel before her and nobody asked what she was or tried to guess 😂

it just underlined for me how negative some people are becoming about dogs with all the recent news It is not just because of 'news' it is also because in everyday life dogs have become more visible, more audible and more of a PITA. It's just accepted now that someone will have a 'badly looked after and therefore badly behaved' dog on the bus, in the shops, in the children's play area.

Obviously visibly sprocker = \ = XL bully.

Edited

yep, the news is the reality in this instance . I’m a 90s kid and not once did I have a dog jump up at me even the ones that would roam the streets with no owner. In the past 6 years I’ve witnessed/seen all sorts of incident.

But yeah very odd to mistake OPs dog for an XL bully 🤣🤣

Lostcotter · 05/10/2023 09:35

I did have a bit of a giggle at the confusing OPs dog for an XL bully but on a more serious note you do make a good points here and I wish more dog owners were like you.

And as strange as I find it about her thinking that dog was an xl bully, on reflection- the dog breed is probably irrelevant to this woman. She just doesn’t want her kids near strange dogs. Period. And that is fair enough. Especially if they are not on a lead.

Yellowsubmarineunderthesea · 05/10/2023 09:44

Good answer ,@NosnowontheScottishhills - I'm not a dog person and while I would generally know the difference between a St. Bernard and a spaniel, I certainly wouldn't know the difference between many types of dog breed. I am cautious of all dogs though and would even warn children to be wary of all dogs they aren't totally familiar with whether it's a tiny lapdog or a giant drooling retriever. It's very unfair to call someone a muppet for not knowing what dogs are what. Is someone who isn't into cars/planes a muppet for not knowing one type from another.

In all honesty, I didn't even realise bully XL was a type of dog, I thought from news reports it was all dogs who are inclined to bully. For many people seeing a dog alone is enough to trigger fear. Remember the story of the elephant afraid of the mouse? One of my kids absolutely loved horses, rode regularly but was quite wary of dogs.

I agree. I’ve been accosted by dogs more times in the last few years than ever before, including on main roads as a runner and places with clear controls in place. We don’t allow ours to approach people. She’s very friendly but I don’t want her learning that she can jump at everyone. So if I don’t have verbal control she’s on a lead. Generally if managed they grow out of it so to speak but if they are allowed to do it as puppies they will continue to do it.

I agree with this

Just reading this thread and seeing people laughing at someone who thought and unusual black and white spotty dog could be a Dalmatian or that someone was confused between two wiry haired terriers

Not everyone is a doggy person. So fine - a spaniel looks nothing like a bully xl. But I’m sure there are things we have all got wrong and not really kind to laugh at people because of it
