Someone thought my dog was an XL bully

walking towards us on the pavement and loudly telling her kids to be careful of that awful XLA bulley dog and walk away from it...

I wouldn't mind so much if she looked a bit more like a bulldog of almost any variety but our lovely dog is a Sprocker..

say it just underlined for me how negative some people are becoming about dogs with all the recent news

😂He loves an outfit. Has more jumpers & coats than me. If I ask him do you want your dressing gown on he goes and puts his nose against the cupboard where his drying coats are kept. He often refuses to let me take his jumpers or dressing gowns off at bedtime

I don't think I'd know an XL bully if it fell on me, to be honest with you.

Nevertheless, I wouldn't be scared as long as it was on a lead, and I wouldn't start yelling at people!

All dogs should be on leads, as NOBODY has full control of their dog, not really.

In my village, we're encouraged to photograph people (and their dogs,) and report to the council if we see them with the dogs off a lead. Because there have been a few dog attacks against farm animals. A few pregnant sheep (and cows) have miscarried and even ended up dying themselves - from the shock - after being attacked by dogs belonging to stupid people, that let their dogs run loose around random fields.

They're taking it really seriously now. The farmers have said if they find anybody's dog running around in THEIR fields, anywhere near THEIR livestock, they'll shoot it - and they will!

Nope she really was stupid. If you're going to be afraid of something perhaps learn the tiniest bit about that thing? It's nowt to do with being a dog person or not.

I love all the photos of your beautiful dogs. I also have a sprocker, and he's just so utterly delighted by everyone and everything that I can't imagine him being aggressive.

Fox red labs are gorgeous, but I don't think I saw any until recently, maybe that's why people are confused.

It's just as well mine likes to wear clothes, as he's poorly at the moment & is suffering from urine incontinence & we were having a problem getting nappies & belly bands to stay in place when he slept, so he now wears braces to keep them in place 😂

I regularly walk around my neighbourhood and into town. I cannot go anywhere without encountering at least 5-10 dogs. And I'd say about 80% of the dogs are off lead (and this is not in a park - usually on a pathway). About half of those run over and try to jump on me. It's very frustrating (and sometimes unnerving). Without fail, the owners smile at me and say "oh, don't worry, he/she is friendly." I actually don't care if your dog is friendly - I don't want it jumping on me.

I don't hate dogs - I love all animals (am vegan for this reason) - but I know very little about them and choose to avoid where possible.

Agree, OP, that your dog looks nothing like an XL bully, but the woman isn't a muppet for not having that knowledge, even if you think she should.

I see people are just using this as an excuse to post pics of their dogs, and I’m here for it. So here’s my XL Bully.

My (rescue) British Bulldogs have been mistaken for pitbulls for years - I also get asked why their tails are docked (they're not, they have naturally short, slightly curled tails).

Sorry I do agree with people insulting the stupid woman.

No everyone knows dog breeds that's fine. But if you don't, don't insult and call someone's dog the wrong breed and call it awful when you clearly have no idea.

I have three beautiful boxers. One brindle, one fawn and one white. I've had a few people ask if the white one is an xl bully, and whilst I can appreciate they are all bull breeds so it's an easy enough mistake if you aren't a dog person, it's a bit worrying to think that she could potentially be reported as an illegal breed. She's a gentle soul.

Oh she's so pretty - you can see her gentle soul in her beautiful face.

I'm anxious for my mum's dog as she's some sort of staffy/lab cross (also a rescue so we aren't sure) so obviously has a bit of a bully look. She's a total softie who wees herself at loud noises and strange dogs (especially small, bossy ones).

@bonbon2023 while your dog might be the quietest and cutest dog under the sun, his look terrifies me if I was to come across him on a path looking as per the photo - mouth open, tongue out and all muscle. Hopefully he'd he on a short lead but unfortunately all to often dogs are straining at leads and owners are having difficulties holding them close. And yes, it might be just my own issues around dogs that give me that feeling but really everyone should be aware the not everyone else in life loves or even likes dogs

Is it possible to insult a dog? They shit on the path and lick their balls - do they understand the concept of etiquette?

I have an English Bull Terrier, soft as mush but always has been kept on a lead around the general public (I firmly believe all responsible dog owners should do this).

He's a bit of a freak of nature though and considerably larger that he should be for his breed standard, which means I've had occasions in the past where I've been harassed by people saying he is a banned breed (one even filmed us and phoned the police?!)

I dread walking him these days and recently we've taken to only walking him at times of day there are few people about and driving him to places off the beaten track.

Makes me both angry and sad.

But I don't blame the people who are scared or wary of dogs though.

I blame all the dickheads who bought dogs over the last 2-3 years and have spent zero time and effort training good behaviour and who let them run free and harass people and other dogs "because they need to run about!!"
