“Livestock are not invisible nor quiet actually. They leave signs.”

Well exactly, but also... the most obvious sign should be that there are fields?

I mean, just the existence of fields should indicate there’s some sort of farming and maybe it’s best to find out what before letting your dog run about...

Walk up to gate. Your dog should be on lead by now. Look in field. Can you see livestock? Evidence? Poo? Fleece? Yes - keep on lead. No, keep on lead and go onto field. Have another look. No signs then let dog off but keep close. Walk carefully keeping eyes open. Keep assessing. Keep dog close.

It really isn’t hard. Most wildlife know when there is a dog and make themselves scarce. Livestock are obvious. If you cannot keep your dog close offlead then they should not be off. Our terrier pups recall is fantastic as we’ve used check ins rather than recall so she doesn’t go far (and it’s been tested) but still developing so currently we’re not walking anywhere where there may be livestock. There are other places to go while her recall is developing.

I grew up rurally. I live semi rurally now. Most people employ these controls and enjoy varied and enriching walks.
