I love dogs. I have two. Currently have chihuahuas but I’ve had a jack Russel in the past.

I’ve been around plenty of dogs. I used to work in a rescue kennel, and after all this, there are still two breeds im really not keen on

Yorkshire terriers. I find they have a very pungent smell. Every one I’ve met have the same sort of smell and it’s very off putting.

English bull terriers. It’s the head. I really don’t like the head!

I love staffies, rotties, dobermans and a lot of other breeds, but those two really do bother me. I’m also not particularly keen on westies either but I think that’s because my MIL had two and they were horrible little shits.

Tiny dogs that tremble
Dogs with white fur that goes brown around the mouth and bum
Flat-faced dogs
Smelly dogs (spaniels and labs for eg)
Dogs that drool
Dogs with bulgy eyes

I like medium sized dog-shaped dogs that don’t smell too bad and don’t drool. When I’m out and about and see a dog I love the look of, it’s usually a mongrel.

DominoRules · 17/04/2023 08:00

I’ve never not liked a dog once I’ve got to know it, even if initial appearances put me off!

There’s lots of breeds I wouldn’t get as they wouldn’t suit our lifestyle or we couldn’t give them what they need though

Generally I love a gun dog - one who will be out with me in all weathers and up for anything

LadyOfTheCanyon · 17/04/2023 08:30

My perfect dog aesthetically is a smooth Fox Terrier. The proportions are just exactly correct as far as I'm concerned.

Followed by Basejis, Dobermans, English Toy terriers and most sighthounds.

The rest can get in the bin.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 17/04/2023 09:23

My dog hasn't been mentioned (which is surprising because they are a particularly difficult breed), but I do have to say re tail docking - mine was done before I got her, immediately after birth and I hate it. She's a working dog (or was bred to be, although I rarely work her) and every time I see her little bit of tail it makes me want to cry. She's got quite a long dock, so a fair bit of tail left, but still... I dislike on principal, any dog that has a short dock, and wish wish wish that I'd spoken for my pup before birth so she could have been left undocked.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 17/04/2023 09:28

Oh is she a Schipperke? They havent been mentioned yet. Lovely dogs.

Agree with docking. There's no need.

Any medium/large dog breeds. Just don't feel comfortable with them

shadowchancesassy · 17/04/2023 10:08

@Snoopystick they are only dog lovers to the breeds they like/love. Which doesn't make you a dog lover, just a contradicting arse really.

Oh bog off with the sanctimonious twaddle. I doubt there's a person on this thread who wouldn't be kind to any dog that came to say hi to them, regardless of how it looked, but we're allowed to have aesthetic preferences and especially to dislike some of the more extreme man-made interferences. I volunteered in dog rescue for years and did my best to find every dog the best home, including the pugs and poos and bullies...they just weren't the ones I wanted to take home myself.

Iamclearlyamug · 17/04/2023 10:15

Adore staffies and never met a bad one, my darling old boy is irreplaceable.

Also grew up with a flat-coated retriever who was the most beautiful soul 🥰

I'd love a dalmatian but don't know a huge amount about them as a breed.

Generally speaking I don't like small breeds, yappy and often more aggressive as if they have small man syndrome 🤣

DrMeredithGrey2023 · 17/04/2023 10:19

Surely, when it comes to this thread, 'don't like' translates to more 'not my favourite, wouldn't choose to own one' rather than 'I hate these dogs, I wish them harm and would kick one as soon as look at one'

Labs aren't my favourite, I would still show them some love if I came across one on a walk. I wouldn't walk past an injured collie lying in a ditch just because I don't get a good vibe from them.

It's really not that deep.

Easterfunbun · 17/04/2023 10:20

Fave breeds:

  • staffs
  • labs
  • springer spaniels

Other than that I don’t have a major revulsion towards any other dog other than the XL bully massive types.

I agree this thread is heartbreaking. The language used is really upsetting from so called dog lovers

Softoprider · 17/04/2023 10:26

I like dogs but the two breeds I would not choose are Labradors and Beagles. I am not so sure if it is because of the dogs or the owners ! dons hard hat

Softoprider · 17/04/2023 10:28

Also just wanted to say I would not have an XL Bully because of the sheer size of them but every one I have ever met has been friendly and nice - unlike the reputation awarded to them on boards like this one

shadowchancesassy · 17/04/2023 10:31

I've owned quite a few dogs over the years and I always thought I'd be a small dog owner, I've previously owned Jack Russells, Yorkies shih tzus. Until we got our American xl bully, he's just amazing and so loving.

The only dogs I wouldn't own and that's German shepherds just because my neighbour has two and they bark continuously. Met a chihuahua the other day and it was the cutest little thing but not sure they are for me.

Seasonofthewitch83 · 17/04/2023 10:32

I dont like any of the poodle cross breeds, I always find them tremendously spoilt and yappy. My sister has one and I have never been able to warm to it.

Dont love Jack Russells, never seen a well trained one and they can be little sods.

I dont like XL Bullies or similar - the capacity to do damage is too high for me, and you never know if the owner has been kind/trained them well.

SixPurpleChairs · 17/04/2023 10:32

I also can't stand tear stains.

I love gun dogs especially huge huggable ones. The goofier and more lumbering the better.

Dislike rabbit sized dogs toy dogs as I think a house rabbit would be easier and scared I'd stand or sit on it.

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 17/04/2023 10:33

If I was queen of the world I would outlaw dachshunds.

Can confirm - my poodle mix doesn't know he's born 🤣
Also, although not a 'yappy' sized dog, he's super vocal.
I am trying my hardest to train that out of him though. He's just an attention seeking fool.

Strawberrypicnic · 17/04/2023 10:42

I don't like chow chows, or rather I don't understand why people keep them when living in close vicinity with other people. They always seem to be so aggressive and the owners never look like they're having a good time. I don't think the teddy bear look is cute enough to make up for it.

Lots of people on here love labradors but I don't find them cute at all. Spaniels also don't really do anything for me looks-wise!

I love greyhounds, lurchers, podencos, Dobermanns (uncropped ears of course) and staffies. I think collies and Malinois are beautiful too, but would never own them.

Oh my sisters is mad as a box of frogs and completely thinks he's ruler of the house! They are besotted with him though - he got a sofa full of wrapped presents for his birthday last week!

LadyJ2023 · 17/04/2023 10:51

Defo not a fan of any of these mixed breeds, it's not natural. We've had staffing love them but hate the idea if they do accidentally bite they lock down unlike other dogs you can pull off. Have a lab now erm if she stunk she wouldn't be here so maybe some need washing regularly lol. Don't like poodles, pugs, terriers for there yappiness etc

DidyouNO · 17/04/2023 10:58

I agree with most pp. any breed that's brachycephalic. It's cruel and they should be illegal. Most have a life expectancy of 6-8 years and die of heart failure having spent those years fighting for every breathe. Dreadful!
I'm also not keen on anything mixed that's spoken about like they're a breed and not a mongrel. Cockapoos/ labrapoos/shit poos etc. maybe that's the owners more than the dogs though.

I said SOME of the comments. I too dislike the man-made interference and how dogs have been bred.
