I love dogs. I have two. Currently have chihuahuas but I’ve had a jack Russel in the past.

I’ve been around plenty of dogs. I used to work in a rescue kennel, and after all this, there are still two breeds im really not keen on

Yorkshire terriers. I find they have a very pungent smell. Every one I’ve met have the same sort of smell and it’s very off putting.

English bull terriers. It’s the head. I really don’t like the head!

I love staffies, rotties, dobermans and a lot of other breeds, but those two really do bother me. I’m also not particularly keen on westies either but I think that’s because my MIL had two and they were horrible little shits.

Oh and JRTs - never met one that wasn't an absolute barking bitey dick

Hobbitlover · 16/04/2023 21:50

Hate owners who fuck up a dog & cause it to react.
I love all dogs tbh.

QueenofLouisiana · 16/04/2023 21:56

Yappy little feckers- I know you're little and feel aggrieved by this, but shut up!

I like dog-shaped dogs, preferably big enough to fuss without getting backache.

I grew up with border collies and boxers, now own a large greyhound. He gives the best cuddles.

I don’t dislike any breed, but brachycephalic dogs make me so sad. I canicross with my dog and today we did a three mile bike ride together, with him running flat out and free with me. He loves his runs so much, it would be so awful if he wasn’t able to because of something that’s been bred into him for fashion. We met someone walking a bulldog (I think an Old English one? Looked like the Churchill dog) and even on a cold day the poor thing was panting like it was fit to drop and could barely move either, it was so bandy legged ☹️

Spudpup is a working type fox red lab btw, and incredibly handsome IMO. And much less whiffy than my old spaniel was (also an excellent dog). He had cheesy feet 😂

hello to a fellow Spud!

I dislike border collies - I am nervous around them - maybe I was a sheep in a former life!

wheresmymojo · 16/04/2023 22:03

I like border collies but I wouldn't want one personally - too neurotic about balls and they always seem quite tetchy with other dogs.

StillMedusa · 16/04/2023 22:04

I love all dogs to say hello to (if they are friendly and want to say hi)

But I'd never own anything smaller than my cat (a 25 pound Maine CoonGrin) as they feel a bit pointless (sorry Shih tzu, Yorkie owners).. and I'm far warier of a chihuahua or a JR or Pom than a big dog! Plus they are such yappy little buggers!
Not keen on 'bred as lap dog' dogs generally; I like a dog that has a purpose ..not necessarily a working dog, but one that likes to run in the woods, hunt squirrels (mine is no danger to an actual squirrel but she likes to think she could catch one )

I just feel sorry for anything with a flat face, or floppy skin. I can't do drool either (shame as I love Boxers but that slobber!)

I like wolfy looking dogs for preference.. good noses, pricked up ears (less susceptible to ear infections), and preferably hairy as possible. Mine does have a curled over the back tail, but it it huge, magnificent and you certainly can't see her bum hole... she is decently covered with huge shaggy trousers!
Love lurchers (scruffy ones) and scruffy pointers... no smooth coated dogs for me.

So basically I am not keen on anything, small, docile, short coated, flat faced or dribbly !!

I currently have a Eurasier, but would love a Samoyed at some point too :)

Luckycat1 · 16/04/2023 22:10

Being a fairly new dog owner, I'm surprised at how many dogs I like now. Thought I didn't like chihuahuas until I met the sweetest girl who just wanted endless tummy rubs.

That said I don't like dogs that scare me. So xl bullies are probably top of the list, but any dog that looks like it wants to tear my pup to pieces and has the power to do so if it slipped its lead (a straining at its lead shar pei was the last - 'naturally suspicious of people and dogs' why would someone get one as a family pet??) I used to love gsd but keep coming across aggressive ones :(

And dogs that are now widely known to have problems functioning normally (walking and breathing) make me sad. I cannot get my head around why they're still being purchased. A breeder just wants the money, but as an owner you have to watch your dog suffer over years.

I have a mongrel and think she's absolutely perfect :) I like loads of dogs, but my favourite are medium to large breeds with proper snouts and long legs. Border collies are especially beautiful - one day!

My grey does too she full body leans, chitters which is such a lovable sighthound specific thing and has zero issue with nudging your hand so you give her a cuddle! I think sighthounds but especially greyhounds are misunderstood and not known enough

Ricco12 · 16/04/2023 22:32

Labs & spaniels - don't trust them , come across too many that are dog aggressive

Anything doodle or poo

Small yappy fluffy things.

Zero interest in anything like that.

Love Stafford's, boxers, whippets , greyhound, lurchers, blood hounds.

MissingMoominMamma · 16/04/2023 22:36

I wouldn’t ever have:

Flat faced dogs.

Labradors.

Huskies and Akitas.

Not overly keen on spaniels.

But I’d pet other people’s!

Hillcrest2022 · 16/04/2023 23:20

TwilightSkies · 16/04/2023 17:51

Akitas. Horrible!
Also not fussed on labs, the smell.

An Akita owner once told me that they just don't really care about their human and don't give any love back... I don't know if that was his particular pet or a characteristic of the breed but would be a deal breaker for me - can you imagine !?

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 16/04/2023 23:34

I don’t like Dobermans, I was bitten by one as a child and have since held it against the whole breed. Plus, they are always in horror films. They scare the shit out of me. I can’t warm to GSD either, though I have no logical reason. I love Huskies and Akitas, the ones I’ve met are like big teddy bears.
I really love the yappy, little ones. I have had chihuahuas and JRT’s which are my faves (and I still have). They are terrors in the best way and fit perfectly on my lap.

DrMeredithGrey2023 · 16/04/2023 23:42

Don't like GSD's....because my previous dog of 12 years had a run in with one as a pup and spend the rest of her years gobbing off to anything that so much dared look like a GSD - so out of solidarity I must forever remain cold towards them as a breed.

Dobermans scare me, which is ridiculous but a throw back to them being crop eared, mean guard dogs in many of the films I watched growing up. In reality, I can see that they are beautiful dogs.

Border collies have a snide, snipey vibe to me.

I'm not a fan of a yappy, small breed either, but I do know that is mainly due to the owners. I've not met one yet that feels the need to apologise if their little shit is yipping away at you/your dog/child. Also can't imagine carrying a dog around on a DOG WALK

DrMeredithGrey2023 · 16/04/2023 23:43

Also wouldn't own a lab. Just not my cup of tea.

Kanaloa · 16/04/2023 23:45

This is like mumsnet treason, but I dislike greyhounds. I used to work in the community and had to visit a house where they had four of them, and they were some of the most unpleasant, pushy, and worse smelling dogs ever. Realistically I know this was one family’s dogs, and there are lots of greyhounds who are not like that, but they’re the only ones I’ve ever met and it put me off them.

TwoMonthsOff · 16/04/2023 23:46

How is the word ‘brachycephalic’ pronounced please

BenCoopersSupportWren · 16/04/2023 23:51

How is the word ‘brachycephalic’ pronounced please

Brack-ee-sef-AL-ick, more or less.

TwoMonthsOff · 16/04/2023 23:52

@BenCoopersSupportWren
thank you, it’s a difficult word for sure and I have never heard it spoken

TrashyPanda · 16/04/2023 23:54

Dobermans - my late DF told me about when he was parachuted behind enemy lines in WWII and was attacked by a Doberman. It bit right through his leather flight jacket! Now that’s scary.

I like a dog that doesn’t take up the whole bed.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 16/04/2023 23:55

keff, rather than sef - at least in the medical world (might be different in dog breeding).

custardbear · 17/04/2023 00:00

StopStartStop · 16/04/2023 18:05

Samoyeds are beautiful. You can keep the rest.

Lol I'm inclined to agree! I have one, looking to increase to at least 2!
I don't mind most dogs but not like the love I have for Sammies

alijangra · 17/04/2023 00:13

I have a rescue Frenchie, he’s the sweetest boy IMO. And I’m only a little bit of an arsehole 😆

NosieRosie · 17/04/2023 00:21

Any dog that can’t breathe or it’s mother has to have a Caesarian in order for it to be born because the puppies head is too big for mother to birth naturally.

Any dog that has suffered its first months of life just for a puppy farmer to earn big bucks. With its mother suffering for years only to be thrown out or bludgeoned to death when she is no longer able to produce puppies.

Other than those I hate any bully breeds or small yappy, bitey things.

Oh and husky type dogs that are too person/dog reactive to be allowed off lead. Not so much the dogs but the owners who choose to own an animal they are not equipped to take care of properly.

I love dogs that are healthy and able to enjoy life off lead, where appropriate, and cause no problem to others. Yes I appreciate that dogs owners have a big part to play in the dogs training and temperament. Some dogs have a very poor start in life and the kennel club advocate unhealthy dogs to have a “pedigree” status.

Lots of people are under the impression that a puppy who comes with KC registered papers is a healthy pup that is superior to pups who don’t have papers.

Not true!’

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 17/04/2023 06:31

So much hate for the small and yappy…bring them all to me, I will defend them with my life 😂. Someone has to love them and I reckon I’m good for the job.

Ylvamoon · 17/04/2023 06:59

I don't like squashed face dogs or the ones that are constantly drooling! You can't say hallo without being covered in dog slobber- just gross!

Anything terrier & Spaniel is just a big fat no- why would you want to put up with exess energy, yeppy, snappy dogs?
(especially the pets!)

Oh yes and Labs! I usually ebd up with one following me when I take treats for my own dogs. The worst that happened to us was one that jumped into my car. I usually put a few treats in for my own dog ...

Border Colliies, have still to meet one that aperes "normal" - just walk, stop staring and dont run around like a lunie!
