Should I get a stud fee ?

Hi,

So a few months ago our dog was put into doggy day care for a few days whilst we went away. A few weeks later I got a call to say that he has gotten another dog pregnant, he is a KC registered lab, as is the bitch ( we will forget for the moment my suspicions surrounding this )

Anyway, since they've been in touch asking me for his kc papers and his pedigree etc!

They're obviously going to be making a huge amount of money out of this ... am I within my rights to ask for something before handing over his paperwork.

I wouldn’t want a stud fee, I wouldn’t be handing over any paperwork and my dog would not be attending that ‘daycare’ in future.

BlueEyesWhiteDragon · 28/12/2021 09:02

Personally I'd just be refusing to hand them over full stop.

Sidneysussex · 28/12/2021 09:03

Why was a bitch on heat there? I would be rather suspicious of that one also. Funny how she got pregnant by a pedigree lab out of all the dogs there.
Yep ask for a fee for the paperwork. Check what going rate is for labs, first.

BitcherOfBlakiven · 28/12/2021 09:04

So you sent your unneutered dog to daycare, he got another dog pregnant and you want money from that?

Grim.

Sparkai · 28/12/2021 09:05

I think it's fair to say that if they want the papers, they can pay the stud fee. If they don't pay, then no papers.

TedGlenn · 28/12/2021 09:05

It does sound suspicious! No, I would definitely not share any of his papers without a stud fee.

army2426 · 28/12/2021 09:07

How is it 'grim'

Daycare were well aware he is entire.... ( I mean it's not as if I could hide it anyway 🤣 )

Why was a bitch in season at doggy daycare? Have you had an explanation for this?
Is it the daycare owner's own bitch?

Sparkai · 28/12/2021 09:07

No, not grim. The owner wants money if the puppies are going to be sold on with her dog as registered sire.

It is very suspicious that it just happened to be a bitch in heat, of the same breed with KC places that was impregnated at a boarding kennels that should know the basics of dog care (ie keep unfettered dogs and bitches seperate). Oh and look, the bitch also happens to be owned by the kennels?! Hmm

Fredstheteds · 28/12/2021 09:07

If they want to sell as pedigree yes- I suspect it’s quick buck .... however eyes, hips screening is so essential

army2426 · 28/12/2021 09:07

No it's not the day care owners bitch.

OP posts:
Jenjenn · 28/12/2021 09:08

No papers without fee. And I would not use that daycare again. They either don't mind animals very well or are up to some questionable stuff.

Maelstrom23 · 28/12/2021 09:08

Intact male dogs can go to daycare, what a strange comment to say it's 'grim' Confused

FawnFrenchieMum · 28/12/2021 09:11

Umm I started reading thinking no you shoudnt get a stud fee, it was an accident and not a planned encounter etc (although how this has been allowed to happen at a registered day care is beyond me), however once I got to the asking for papers part I started to change my mind.
It’s a shit way for puppies to be made with no health screening etc.

Maelstrom23 · 28/12/2021 09:12

In your situation now, a) I'd change doggy daycare to a responsible one and b) absolutely ask for a stud fee before exchange for your dog's pedigree papers-£500 plus pick of the litter. I'd suspect this was planned, possibly business owners in on it, so you may as well get something out it.

astoundedgoat · 28/12/2021 09:12

I think that as they clearly intend to sell the puppies for a profit off the back of the sire’s paperwork, you can ask for the market rate stud fee.

If they say “oh but we accrued costs because your dog knocked up ours” then I would suggest they take the kennel to small claims for neglect of duty.

Cheeky bastards.

Or in lieu of the fee, a puppy (to sell or keep).

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 28/12/2021 09:14

How can you guarantee it was your dog?

I'd not hand over any papers at all and I'd not ask them for any money.
It's all highly dodgy unethical.

Soubriquet · 28/12/2021 09:14

Yes. No fee, no papers

Very suspicious though

icedcoffees · 28/12/2021 09:15

The daycare is hugely negligent for allowing an entire male and an in-season bitch to mix and I suspect they're breaking the terms of their license and their insurance. I would not be happy and I wouldn't be paying any kind of "stud fee" to anyone!

The owner of the bitch pays the stud fees to the OP not the other way around

I agree with Ihaventgottimeforthis. No way I would I want to be involved in this by either handing over papers or accepting money.
Scarydinosaurs · 28/12/2021 09:18

Totally unethical as you can’t confirm your dog fathered the litter etc

I would just refuse entirely.

skyblueone · 28/12/2021 09:20

What?! Didn't the daycare staff mention at the time that this had happened? Wow.

pilates · 28/12/2021 09:22

I would not be handing over any papers and he definitely wouldn’t be going there again.

I agree with this - I wouldn’t be having anything to do with any of this.
