Should I get a stud fee ?

Hi,

So a few months ago our dog was put into doggy day care for a few days whilst we went away. A few weeks later I got a call to say that he has gotten another dog pregnant, he is a KC registered lab, as is the bitch ( we will forget for the moment my suspicions surrounding this )

Anyway, since they've been in touch asking me for his kc papers and his pedigree etc!

They're obviously going to be making a huge amount of money out of this ... am I within my rights to ask for something before handing over his paperwork.

You only have their word that you dog is the actual stud. They can get lost.

MiddleOfThePack · 28/12/2021 09:44

Absolutely do not accept any money or get involved. If you accept a fee and subsequently those puppies are unhealthy in any way, it will come back to haunt you as there will be a contract between the parties that the pups are healthy & from good stock. They are crazy to try to make money from an unwitnessed incident at a negligent kennel. Let them sue the kennel.

Borris · 28/12/2021 09:45

How many months ago did the mating happen? Because bitches are only pregnant for 9 weeks

Leonberger · 28/12/2021 09:46

Not a chance would I give them any information at all! She’s got a cheek Blush

CheshireKitten123 · 28/12/2021 09:47

Seems like it should be called "dodgy daycare" [sceptical]

GoodPrincessWenceslas · 28/12/2021 09:47

I have messaged the bitches owners and she has said 'yes, you would get a fee if it was planned but it wasn't however Ive looked online and im happy to pay you £100 in total not per puppy

Silly attitude to take. Whether it was planned or not, she plans to make a profit out of the puppies and can't do so without the requisite KC proof. As people have said, insist on DNA tests for each puppy, check your papers, and tell them no stud fee, no papers.

Grumpyosaurus · 28/12/2021 09:48

@Saucery

I wouldn’t want a stud fee, I wouldn’t be handing over any paperwork and my dog would not be attending that ‘daycare’ in future.
This. The daycare has been negligent and the bitch's owners are taking the piss. If they want to pursue anyone for costs etc it should be the daycare, and if they don't want to do that and prefer to sell the puppies, they go without KC papers as you didn't consent and the mating wasn't witnessed (allegedly... 'we don't how he got to her... No idea how it could have happened...')
Goawayangryman · 28/12/2021 09:50

This is complete bullshit from the owners of the bitch. They are chancers, and greedy irresponsible ones at that. To breed 'labs' with no joint scoring or other recommended health tests. No. If it were a genuine accident then they could just sell the puppies for a lower price. They only want your papers to bump up the price. Your dog probably had nothing to do with any of this. I'd also be tempted to report the bitch owner to the council in case they are running an unlicensed breeding operation.

Suzi888 · 28/12/2021 09:52

@Ylvamoon

Don't ask for money and don't give any KC papers.

I assume your dog isn't health tested nor is the bitch. If you want to stop irresponsible dog breeding now you can do your bit!
And find a new daycare.

So message her back:

Thanks for letting me know. You're right - this wasn't planned, so on that basis I won't be sharing any paperwork or registration details.

Then block her. I would also be putting in a complaint to the daycare. Really poor practice to take in a bitch in season let alone put her with an entire male! The whole thing sounds planned TBH.

^ and this

And yes, it is grim and shady as hell. Get your dog neutered!

Babyvenusplant · 28/12/2021 09:53

The bitches owner could have just spotted your dog at daycare while picking hers up and decided to make the whole thing up. Her dog could have got pregnant by any dog, as 'nobody' witnessed it. I would have absolutely nothing to do with any of it.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 28/12/2021 09:54

They can still sell the puppies for good money without your paperwork.
I would just block them and arrange for a better daycare tbh.

happylittlevegemites · 28/12/2021 09:54

I would refuse. My mum had this with a stallion many years ago (for some reason the pony was somewhere else short term, and the property owner let one of her friend’s being over a mare in season). She said the mare was of poor quality and she didn’t want its foal to be associated with her stud’s name. And that it was really sneaky.

Blahblahblah40 · 28/12/2021 09:57

Think I be replying with a good few laughing face emojis… planned or not, your dog was the stud and therefore you should be compensated accordingly if they are wanting to register them. No money, no signature/paperwork. I suspect the daycare owner did witness it but didn’t want to tell anyone incase it caused a lot of upset.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/12/2021 09:58

Change daycare.

It’s so dodgy. You didn’t give permission for your dog to be used as a stud. They don’t know if he has any health problems.

It’s disgusting really they’ve done this to you and your dog.

I’d be serving legal papers actually. Your poor dog.

Etinoxaurus · 28/12/2021 09:59

How does the bitch’s owner have your details? If you have the energy you could go to town on the dodgy daycare for breach of gdpr, claim a stud fee and pick of the litter.
Or block Grin

PaddingtonStareBare · 28/12/2021 09:59

Don't hand over anything, I have a dog who I have allowed to be used at stud twice.
But before I did it, I had all the health tests done for his breed plus some extra, the bitches used I turned away several as no health checks and were breeding 'it would be good for the kids.'

The bitches owner always stands to make several thousand pounds, I have taken a pup in place of a stud fee on the first occasion.

I would give the bitches owners absolutely fuck all, they're taking the piss and looking to maximise their profit.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/12/2021 10:00

I’d wonder how many times this has happened with your dog. You were paying for your dog to be looked after, not used as a stud. I’d spread the word about the day care place too.

fruitbrewhaha · 28/12/2021 10:01

This is very dodgy. They accidently allowed their on heat bitch to get in the same area as your intact dog. So basically they are shit kennel owners because there are lots of good reasons why dogs should be managed and kept apart. Well mostly fighting. Even very good natured dogs can take an unliking to a particular breed or dog and a good kennel will be careful to manage how many dogs and which ones can be around each other. So either they are incompetent or they are liars.

Have you done health checks on your dog? Were you planning to stud him anyway? If not then you have every right to be very cross as it can change their behaviour.

I wouldn't be providing papers. They are most likely dishonest dog owners who do not make good breeders.

TheHoptimist · 28/12/2021 10:02

Stud fee for an unproven male is negligible
Most do it for free to establish fertility

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 28/12/2021 10:03

How does this woman know that your dog is a KC lab? Not a chance I would be having anything to do with this, the whole thing is very suss.

Soubriquet · 28/12/2021 10:03

@SpiderinaWingMirror

They can still sell the puppies for good money without your paperwork. I would just block them and arrange for a better daycare tbh.
True but you can’t register them with the kennel club without the papers from both parents.

Therefore the pups won’t sell as high as kennel club registered pups. She still stands to make a nice profit, but would get more if registered

notapizzaeater · 28/12/2021 10:04

Wow, my bitch wasn't allowed to daycare for a month each time she's had a season, (she's a large breed so we've now had 2 and she's booked to be spayed 5th Jan)

No way in hell would I be handing the paperwork over. Have you reported the daycare to the council ?

CallieTorres · 28/12/2021 10:05

Can you report the dog care place as well to a regulatory body? Is there one?

Arren12 · 28/12/2021 10:06

No way this happened unsupervised. The CF did this on purpose. Its not that easy for dogs to mate and it would be noticed because they would be 'flirting' around first for ages and then be tied after for a long time. Dog mating is not just a quick 'how do you do' and often needs an experienced stud for first time bitch. A bitch will not just stand unless they are at the absolute right moment in cycles. Not all days on heart are equal.

There is no way of knowing that it was your dog and even if it was so what. Sounds like neither dog are health tested. Its so important to health test in large breeds especially. It costs hundreds for these scores.

Don't hand a thing over. This is awful.

Look out on pets 4 homes and report when she advertises them and report the daycare.

She will be after 2k per dog and i unfortunately know people who don't know much about breeding etc will buy them as a pet. Poor pups.

Justkeeppedaling · 28/12/2021 10:09

Umm I started reading thinking no you shoudnt get a stud fee, it was an accident and not a planned encounter etc (although how this has been allowed to happen at a registered day care is beyond me), however once I got to the asking for papers part I started to change my mind.
It’s a shit way for puppies to be made with no health screening etc

Why is this a shit way to make puppies? It's exactly the same way as pretty much every human being has been made, ever.
