Hi,

So a few months ago our dog was put into doggy day care for a few days whilst we went away. A few weeks later I got a call to say that he has gotten another dog pregnant, he is a KC registered lab, as is the bitch ( we will forget for the moment my suspicions surrounding this )

Anyway, since they've been in touch asking me for his kc papers and his pedigree etc!

They're obviously going to be making a huge amount of money out of this ... am I within my rights to ask for something before handing over his paperwork.

Good for you OP. I would be furious. Also worth considering how your breeder would feel about one of their pups being used this way.

Really interested in hearing how this pans out. Sounds like this owner is a chancer and a CF.

Branleuse · 01/01/2022 13:10

@Goawayangryman

To all those saying 'neuter your dog'... the evidence is now quite finely balanced on this. Many responsible dog owners are not keen on neutering any more because it raises the risk of certain cancers and things like joint and ligament problems: painful/disabling for the dog and eye- wateringly expensive.

Mammals need sex hormones for health and behaviour, and to remove them for our convenience is a bit dubious.

I wonder why noone worries about this with cats then
Fozzleyplum · 01/01/2022 13:30

If there is no proof that your dog fathered the puppies, then by handing over his papers as proof of parentage, you could be complicit in fraud. I would have nothing to do with it.

Goawayangryman · 01/01/2022 14:29

@Branleuse imagine it is because of the difficulty of protecting female cats from getting pregnant and therefore the case for neutering is quite strong. Much easier with female dogs... You keep them in, when in season. So, notwithstanding health or behavioural reasons for getting dogs neutered... It really is for our convenience I think.

Ariela · 01/01/2022 14:41

@gogohm

Sounds dodgy to me. The lab may not be owned by the kennels but I'm suspecting the owner is a friend/acquaintance. They knew you were bringing in an unneutered dog and planned it. No papers unless full stud fee and proof of that it's a first "accidental" litter and hip scores etc were done
But we do not know for sure that the dog DTD at day care at all! It could have been any old manky stray got the bitch up the duff, and not even at the time the dog was in day care!

And why did the daycare release OP's details? (GDPR procedures clearly not followed). Let alone allow a mating to occur at their premises (if it did?!! why did they say nothing to OP?)

For all we know this could be some opportune bitch owner has seen your nice dog in daycare and thought if I get my bitch pregnant with the dog down the road then claim KC reg sire from you, I can make a fortune.

Don't hand over paperwork and don't take a fee, it's probably not your dog that's the dad!

AncoraAmarena · 01/01/2022 16:53

The OP has already stated that she agreed for her contact details to be passed over. That seems to be the only thing that has been done right here. Whole thing with daycare and the bitches owners is as shady as hell.

PotsAndPan · 01/01/2022 16:57

Just say to them ‘look, I’m terribly sorry, this is awful but he isn’t actually a pedigree so I don’t have any papers’

katieg03 · 01/01/2022 16:58

My friend is a registered breeder of many breeds of dog. She's qualified in scanning, health checks and all sorts. She has waiting lists for all her pups. I have a Frenchie and you are looking at the price of a puppy or pick of the litter usually. So £100 is insulting. Sounds very dodgy that this is happened. A male dog " locks" on to a female, there's a crazy amount of noise and really for this to have gone unnoticed is very very strange!

NewYearNewBeer · 01/01/2022 19:24

Surely your dog is endorsed so papers wouldn't be of any value at all, anyway - his progeny cannot be registered regardless?

muddyford · 03/01/2022 19:36

Another vote for not passing on any details nor paperwork. Fraudulent chancers, I'm afraid.

MrsWinters · 06/01/2022 19:17

Dogs temperaments can change significantly after a mating. I would probably write to the daycare asking for £500 because of potential impact on your dogs behaviour. And not give them your KC name or paperwork, I’d also write to the kennel club to let them know your dog was bred without authorisation and any puppies should not be registered.

viques · 07/01/2022 12:05

@army2426

I have messaged the bitches owners and she has said 'yes, you would get a fee if it was planned but it wasn't however Ive looked online and im happy to pay you £100 in total not per puppy '

They have sent me a test they did to see if the pups are 100% lab and they were the only labs there at the time - so I'm told!

Apparently, it wasn't until she got pregnant that they knew about the mating.

If I was one of the idiots paying for a puppy conceived like this and I was told it had KC registered parents I would be very unhappy to learn that the puppies were the result of an unplanned bunk up at day care. If there is anything wrong with the puppies and your dog is registered as the sire would they then have grounds to complain to you, the day care people or the KC for misrepresentation? The sire could be any similar looking dog with all sorts of issues. This situation has scam written all over it.
CatchIt · 08/01/2022 08:39

@BitcherOfBlakiven

So you sent your unneutered dog to daycare, he got another dog pregnant and you want money from that?

Grim.

So someone sent their unneutered bitch to daycare, she got pregnant by another dog and they want your dogs papers from that?

Grim.

Any update on this OP?

CheshireKitten123 · 08/01/2022 14:01

Yes, I'm also curious about an update from this unsatisfactory situation.

peachicetea · 11/01/2022 06:52

@MintyGreenDream

They're spouting shit.I bet you anything the other lab owner is friends with the daycare owner.Get the fee you want before handing papers over or just refuse to hand them over.
This ✋
Frannibananni · 11/01/2022 07:10

If they want papers they pay a fee. A bloody big one at that. They had to know the bitch was on heat.

MrsWinters · 11/01/2022 16:47

Someone has posted a story almost exactly the same as this on the Labrador Facebook page- I wonder if it’s a new sort of scam we should be starting to look out for

Pirate2022 · 11/01/2022 19:11

Any update on this OP? Sounds very suspect doesn’t it

verytiredofbeingshoutedat · 14/01/2022 08:43

The local borough council registers dog kennels/ home boarding

A PP has linked the relevant legislation . Telephone that team to discuss

It may be fraud, but it's certainly negligent by kennels

Don't hand over any KC papers

army2426 · 11/02/2022 20:08

Apologies, not been on for ages. In the end I told them I wasn't happy with having my dog associated with it in anyway shape or form and expressed my suspicions. Didn't hear anything else.
