I will start
Corgis
Afghan Hounds

When I was a child I used to see lots of Afghan Hounds
And I don’t see any of the Collies with long hair (like Lassie is it a Rough Collie?)
Border Collies I see a lot of though

@DogFoodPie

As I live in Sussex I have always thought I would like a Sussex Spaniel, but never seen one.
They are gorgeous! I'm in Sussex too.

I've always fancied a Clumber Spaniel. One of which we are locally occasionally. Not so keen on their drooling tendencies though.

CircusSands

Thank you! He's 4 now and makes us laugh every day, he's spoilt rotten too. Beardies are the best!

chaosrabbitland · 22/08/2021 01:58

Its been so many years since i last saw a bloodhound i can't remember. My favourite dog i love them dearly .i wish they were much more common .iv resigned myself to only seeing them on crime and investigtion docus

GuyFawkesDay · 22/08/2021 08:03

I know Clumber cross spaniels. They're crossed for athleticism but they're still slobbery if they have the flatter Clumber face. Gorgeous dogs

DominicRaabsTravelAgent · 22/08/2021 09:32

Better photo of my gorgeous (and very naughty) setter

Just wow.

We looked into getting an Otterhound before we got our current dog, there's a woman (who's name I forget) who is trying to save the breed. We went to a meeting at her home with some other people to discuss it, they're beautiful dogs, though their coat is very waxy/oily.
We were put off by the fact that we wouldn't have really "owned" the dog, the caveats were that we'd have to return the dog to her at any point for breeding etc. I understand why because they're so rare now, but it wasn't the right situation for us.
I really hope she manages to get the numbers up because they're lovely.

There's a chap across the road from me with a boxer, and there's a St. Bernard nearby - don't see many of those.
I think the larger breeds have fallen out of favour because of space, cost and because people automatically think they need more exercise than small dogs, which isn't necessarily the case.

I haven't seen many pointers in recent years which is a shame because they're beautiful dogs.

youvemademyshitlist · 22/08/2021 10:08

@mantlepiece

Rhodesian Ridgebacks used to be quite popular, not seen one for years!
We've got one. He's beautiful but can be a right knob! Grin
HarrisMcCoo · 22/08/2021 10:10

DH's uncle used to own RRs years ago. Have never seen one personally.

Silvergreen · 22/08/2021 10:16

I was walking through the park with my friend during the last lockdown and we were having this very conversation. The park was full of dogs because so many had got them during the past year. We were saying 'you never see dalmations anymore' and seconds later two on leads walked round the corner!

I think maybe there's a preference for smaller or less active dogs as we're better educated about the demands certain dogs have and don't want to get a wrong fit.

CircusSands · 22/08/2021 10:26

@Farevalah I agree with you they are special!

Darklane · 22/08/2021 13:14

I have Skye Terriers but whenever I’m out with them I’m constantly getting stopped by people.... “ oh, aren’t they gorgeous! What are they??”
Funnily enough often when we’re in Scotland which always amazes me.
Someone I know has Sussex Spaniels along with her Skyes

Afghans you don’t see as many as you used to nor Borzois. I often see Old English Sheepdogs.

When I was a kid I had a friend with 2 St Bernards. I've never known an animal create so much saliva. I'm not surprised they have fallen out of favour!

Also when they'd had enough of walking they would lie down on the pavement and refuse to budge.

My friend had to seek out the nearest available phone box (no mobiles in those days) and call his parents to fetch the sleeping dogs home.

Looubylou · 22/08/2021 14:31

Lassie type collie, Old English Sheepdog, Shelties, Setters. In my area it is all cockerpoo, Labradoodles, French bulldogs, pugs and greyhounds. The local rescues are full of staffies, greyhounds, lurchers, and those other elegant ones, that look like an Afghans had his coat cut off ears chopped (bloody name escapes me).

AuntieDolly · 22/08/2021 14:36

I saw a lovely red setter in town this morning

😂😂😂 sounds about right. I often have to accept she's having a wee rest and have to bribe her with treats to move along...

As for the saliva thing, I honestly hardly notice much saliva. Or have I went saliva blind?🤔😂

Carycy · 22/08/2021 14:49

There’s the odd one iced coffee. but my memory is that every other person had one when I was a kid. Perhaps that’s just my perception. loads of spaniels. One every corner! My friend has a working cocker and he seems just as high maintenance as a boarder collie if not more. He eats everything in sight, never stops dogging and doesn’t stop moving. Cute but utterly exhausting being with him. Hoping he will calm down in time!

A friend of ours used to have the most beautiful vimerana. I think I have only ever seen one since.

Definitely get why people want none shedding dogs. And think the whole cross breed fashion is probably a good thing if it’s done carefully.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 22/08/2021 14:57

We see regularly-two airedales, a wheaten terrier, bloodhound, two Pyrenean mountain dogs, three standard poodles, bedlingtons and an Italian greyhound. Oh and another wire foxy.
My son and his ex had an Italian greyhound. He was crazy. Luckily he went with the ex, so they were a good match.🤫

ErrolTheDragon · 22/08/2021 15:02

We were walking by a lake a few years ago and came across a couple who had five or six St Bernards. And a minibus.Grin

Working cockers are definitely bonkers! I'm a dog walker and have lots of working cockers and border collies on my books - the cockers are far more high energy in my opinion!

The collies are incredibly intelligent though - brain games work far better to exhaust them than loads of zooming about, though they do seem to love swimming, especially if it involves retrieving a ball!

Carycy · 22/08/2021 15:07

I miss my beautiful doting collie faces. But my sons got allergies so no doggy for me. I eagerly volunteer to go on dog walks with friends instead.

Keladrythesaviour · 22/08/2021 15:13

Bloodhounds! I always think this. I looked into getting one but the breed description didn't sound appropriate for us, sadly!
We see quite a lot of afghans, but we have a sighthound so move in the right circles, I guess!

SirVixofVixHall · 22/08/2021 15:26

@Sunbird24

Full-size Airedale or Schnauzer, only see the miniature versions SharPei
There is no miniature Airdale, they are a one size breed.
SirVixofVixHall · 22/08/2021 15:32

@PearlyAdriatic

I only ever once saw a beautiful Griffon Bruxellois pup. They’re not the prettiest dogs but they certainly look very wise Grin
My aunt had these, they lived to incredible ages.

@LaurieFairyCake

My beautiful Scottie for those who haven't seen one in a while

She's the best dog in the world 🥰🥰🥰

Oooh 😍😍😍😍😍 I love Scotties. See one occasionally round here.
