Corgis
Afghan Hounds

When I was a child I used to see lots of Afghan Hounds
And I don’t see any of the Collies with long hair (like Lassie is it a Rough Collie?)
Border Collies I see a lot of though

@17to35

Lancashire Heelers. When I was a child (60 years ago) every other dog was a heeler. Old people had them. Not seen one for years.
I've seen a few, one of my neighbours used to have one. (I live in Lancashire)
TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 23/08/2021 18:54

I went to Devon and didn't see the Hound of the Baskervilles - even once.

So there's one that gone... 🤷‍♀️

Mylittlepotofjoy · 24/08/2021 07:36

People always comment when they see my Irish setters so many of them in the 70s and not now !! With my Gordon setters they just ask what they are Grin

WeeChewy · 24/08/2021 11:56

We have 3 Dalmatians and they get a lot of attention. I used to see 2 red setters frequently on our walks but not where we live now. I love Rotties and Dobbies and you just don't get them around now. Before the pandemic I had a dog walking business and most of my clients were labs, or crosses with a poo in the name. I had the odd spaniel, one greyhound, a ridgeback and my friends Weimy. Most of the "poo" owners struggled with their dogs lively craziness 🤣

GiantCheeseMonster · 24/08/2021 13:27

WeeChewy, how do you find Dal personalities? I’ve always loved them from afar and they’re on my potential dog list but I’ve not met any owners in person. I know they have very heavy exercise requirements and moult a lot. How are they as family dogs?

Stellaris22 · 25/08/2021 07:39

@BeaucoupFish

Or Basset Hounds
We have a Basset Hound! They have the most amazing, laid back temperament and are fantastic family dogs. We have the only one round where we live and I've only ever seen 2 others since getting her, only breed for me now.

I'm glad they aren't more popular and we always get 'that's a big sausage dog/dachshund" or people surprised at how fit she is. They're bred to hunt so she gets lots of exercise (and sofa time obviously).

@GiantCheeseMonster

I don’t think you see many Cairns as you used to, or even as many Westies. Old English Sheepdogs.
There are 100s of Westies where I live!

I think, as with many breeds, the 'show type' may have deviated quite a lot from the original working stock, tending to exaggeration. The French 'working' basset I mentioned upthread was quite a different beast to some I've seen. But apart from variations in the breed, fitness obviously depends on lifestyle - yours looks lovely! And clearly successful hunting dogs, as bassets are extinct.Grin

Stellaris22 · 25/08/2021 11:33

I'm not a fan of the over exaggerated show type basset, and ours is more working line than show (her mum was actually a working pack hound originally). She loves trying (and failing) to keep up with faster lurchers and can happily do hikes with us. Definitely not the lazy dog a lot of people expect, but being a hound still likes her sleep.

I'd love our next dog to be a Basset Bleu de Gascogne.

Anotherhill · 28/08/2021 08:56

Yorkies - used to be so common, now hardly ever see them.

BeaucoupFish · 28/08/2021 13:54

@Stellaris22
She’s lovely ❤️ Look at those feet!
I have genuinely never seen one in real life

@nicecheesegromit

The 57 varieties mongrel - my favourite type of dog!
Mine, too. Got a lurcher, which is roughly the same thing. Smile
TheWayTheLightFalls · 28/08/2021 19:08

I absolutely love Rottweilers and have seen precisely two over the past five/ish years.

Boxers, though we had them as pets growing up and I can well understand why central London isn’t overrun with them Grin.

BeaucoupFish · 29/08/2021 13:08

I have just seen a ‘new’ crossbreed on Facebook…

‘Pugalier’ 🤦🏻‍♀️

OP posts:
Anotherhill · 29/08/2021 13:20

Hope it’s insured..

BeaucoupFish · 29/08/2021 13:24

Goodness knows ! Probably cost a couple of thousand as well

www.freeads.co.uk/uk/buy-sell/pets/dogs/pugaliers/

Look at the crosses on this site.

This all looks highly unregulated to me

@hellcatspangle

I'm so sick of the sight of cockerpoos. Practically everyone I know who's had a dog in the last five years has had one.
God, yes!
LimitIsUp · 29/08/2021 13:37

@Jinnybean

I saw a flat coat retriever yesterday that was gorgeous. Iv never seen one before lol
I've got two
ellyeth · 29/08/2021 13:49

It is now very difficult getting a dog. Most people seem to want pedigree dogs, perhaps because they feel they need to have lots of documentation to show lineage and health checks.

It is more ethical to get a rescue dog but, having looked for one myself, there often seems to be issues such as: no visiting children, separation anxiety, destructive behaviour, reactive to other dogs, etc, etc.

The "puppy contract" provided by the RSPCA for buying a puppy/young dog is so complex with so many requirements that it is really quite off-putting.

Pet shops are not now allowed to sell dogs (or cats I think) and, on the face of it, that seems good. However, all these animals are now being sold on line. We bought our dear dog from a pet shop we had been to on many occasions. The animals were very well looked after and there were photos of various dogs in their new homes. We had a proper contract, showing date of birth, breed, etc, etc, and containing insurance provision for 2 months, and a vet appointment for health check and second vaccination. I am beginning to think that it was much safer to have a visible pet shop where animals were in view and which could be inspected if necessary, rather than using the internet where there are all sorts of scams involving puppy farms, often sited in remote places.

Sorry, I've drifted from the original title of the thread but I do think that the preponderance of pure bred dogs, is partly due to the much heavier marketisation of pets, and dogs in particular.

FictionalCharacter · 29/08/2021 13:52

Great Danes, Rottweilers, Yorkshire terriers

ellyeth · 29/08/2021 13:57

I read recently that Old English sheepdogs are very uncommon now and in danger of becoming extinct.

olidora63 · 29/08/2021 23:47

I was brought up with old English sheepdogs back in the 80s . Both of our doggies were amazing …so calm and brilliant characters..and they just didn’t bark ! Grooming was the main problem.X
bluetongue · 30/08/2021 02:57

@Ohpulltheotherone

Doberman’s and Rottweilers. I see the odd one, an occasional older rottie but very few Doberman’s compared to the 90s.
I know a fair few. I am in Australia so the mix is probably different here.

We have poos everywhere here as well.

Wincarnis · 30/08/2021 05:05

@Darklane your Skye terriers are gorgeous!
@mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork am ancient, haven’t seen a sealyham in years!

Where I live (not in UK) I regularly see in the local park lots of doodles, dachshunds, spaniels, pugs, frenchies, schnauzers, chihuahuas, labs, Overseas rescues.
There are also one or two each of greyhound, husky, Malinois, border terrier, Red Setter, Bernese mountain dog, Saluki, borzoi, basset (fauve), basset ( griffon), parson russell, beagle

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 30/08/2021 10:19

@Wincarnis
Haven't read all posts but suspect you and I
may be the only ones who know what a sealyham is now. Haven't seen Wincarnis in recent years either - does it still exist?
