I will start
Corgis
Afghan Hounds

When I was a child I used to see lots of Afghan Hounds
And I don’t see any of the Collies with long hair (like Lassie is it a Rough Collie?)
Border Collies I see a lot of though

@MrsDeaconClaybourne

Setters
Yes, setters. I love red setters.

I see Rough collies and the occasional afghan hound and corgi.

Pure King Charles seem rarer now - they are usually a cross-breed.

Round here every dog is a cockerpoo or labradoodle or a pug.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 21/08/2021 14:06

A guy around here has red setters. Hes had them since I can remember. Saw him other day and he's still got one. Must be getting on, he did have 2 at one point.

Never see dobermans around here. Relatives used to have 3 Dalmatians. Most common dog around here are cockapoos, shih tzus, lhasas, yorkies and lots of crosses between these. Still see lots of alsatian too.

gunnersgold · 21/08/2021 14:06

I'm sure they are sweet dogs but aside from when they are puppies they are super ugly dogs ! It's the people who never had an animal as a child who think they are the only safe dog .. !

dannydyerismydad · 21/08/2021 14:06

Dobermans (Dobermen), Weimarana, German Shepherds, Collies (black and white working dog type and the massive Lassie type).

Every other dog is a cockapoo, Frenchie or pug round here.

Geauxtigers · 21/08/2021 14:07

Red setters and Dalmatians

gardeninggirl68 · 21/08/2021 14:09

I had a 'Lassie' as a child so go a bit crazy when I see one. Was looking for a breeder when we started dog hunting but settled on a rare dog instead....a black Labrador!

liveforsummer · 21/08/2021 14:10

There are quite a few corgis round here including a few pups. My parents just lost their basset hound so I tend to notice those as I stop to talk, There is also a magnificent blood hound. Its quite a doggy part of a city here with lots of walkways and parks so maybe why we have such a selection. We even have one of those dogs that look like a string mop! Afghan hound is the only thing I don't see that's been mentioned here. We do still have a huge influx of poo's and doodles though. I've a Black and Tan Jack Russell and not seen many of those, however did spot a man walking one down the road locally the other day. Nearly stopped the car to chat then realised he'd probably think I was mad 😅

Leonberger · 21/08/2021 14:10

All we ever see is some sort of poodle cross!

Even something as simple as a Labrador is getting more rare here in favour of a doodle Confused

Scandimandy · 21/08/2021 14:11

@hellcatspangle

I'm so sick of the sight of cockerpoos. Practically everyone I know who's had a dog in the last five years has had one.
That’s because they are generally lovely natured dogs and don’t mault. We have one, she is 8 and I had never heard of a cockapoo before getting her but I am allergic to dogs so she was a good option.
MimsyBorogroves · 21/08/2021 14:11

Yes to red setters and Afghan hounds.

We have dalmations and a corgi around here. Quite a few bassets too. I had a basset before, would have another if I could but mine had horrific separation anxiety and nearly broke me.

dannydyerismydad · 21/08/2021 14:12

And the guy we used to buy our pet food from as a kid had 4 Great Danes. Why he kept them in a house rather than a stable, I'll never know. They were magnificent softies, but the size of horses.

You don't see Great Danes any more, but their size is probably the reason why.

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/08/2021 14:13

We have a rough collie. Once you have one you notice them around far more. He gets a lot of attention when we are out and about

Gingernaut · 21/08/2021 14:13

Irish Wolfhounds - there were two owners when I was growing up (fairly affluent area of London with big gardens).

Haven't seen one in the flesh for decades

PermanentlyDizzy · 21/08/2021 14:13

@BeaucoupFish

I will start Corgis Afghan Hounds

When I was a child I used to see lots of Afghan Hounds

Border Collies I see a lot of though

We have two Afghans and at least one Corgi locally and our neighbours at our last house had an absolutely gorgeous, massive, Rough Collie.

Until last year there were quite a few breeds we never saw locally, eg Staffies, Rottweiler, Doberman, GSD, but now we have several of each. I am particularly in love with the Rottie pup who is a real sweetheart and was so so well behaved right from a tiny pup.

That said, that vast majority are Cockerpoos, Maltipoos, Cavapoochons, Labradoodles, Labradors, Cocker Spaniels, Pugs and Frenchies. Oh and there seems to be an increasing trend for rescued Greyhounds as well.

QueenofLouisiana · 21/08/2021 14:14

I think bigger dogs generally are less common. Lots of dachshunds, -poo type mixes and small spaniels.

We have just adopted a retired greyhound and get a lot of comments about him and his size. I think people underestimate their capacity to laze and cuddle.

GoodnightGrandma · 21/08/2021 14:16

Lots of these dogs where I live.
Dalmatian, English sheepdog, Westie, Bichons, Boxer, Setter, and two cairns.

GrouchyKiwi · 21/08/2021 14:17

Thanks, OP. I now desperately need an Otterhound.

Chunkymenrock · 21/08/2021 14:18

St Bernard, Pyrenean Mountain dog, Manchester Terrier. I'm fed up of the sight of CockERpoos too.

GrouchyKiwi · 21/08/2021 14:18

Look at their faces!

MajorNeville · 21/08/2021 14:21

@tillytoodles1

Scottish Terriers.
I've had 2 dogs in my life, both Scotties. I wouldn't have a different breed, wonderful dogs. I don't see many about but there are 2 or 3 in my town.
gingercat02 · 21/08/2021 14:21

We were out a few days ago and I said to DH everyone has a small to medium sized shaggy/curly dog these days. Presumably the 'poo influence.

AlexCabot · 21/08/2021 14:23

One of our neighbours has a Doberman, he's still quite young but he is absolutely gorgeous, the most elegant dog I've ever known. We have a springer so elegant isn't a word we use to describe him!

Dh had a neighbour who bred Afghan hounds when he was young but that was 30 years ago and they do seem quite rare now.
Agree about the good old fashioned mongrels, everything's a mix with a made up name now!

Chunkymenrock · 21/08/2021 14:23

Italian Spinones.

RickOShay · 21/08/2021 14:24

@GrouchyKiwi
Oh thanks Grin now I need one too!
My sister has a basset hound. She is adorable especially when she runs, but she is quite stubborn. And piggy.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 21/08/2021 14:24

Haven’t seen a borzoi for ages (although they were never the most common breed).
