I will start
Corgis
Afghan Hounds

When I was a child I used to see lots of Afghan Hounds
And I don’t see any of the Collies with long hair (like Lassie is it a Rough Collie?)
Border Collies I see a lot of though

My SIL keeps Rough Collies, Lassie types, always has done.

@Keladrythesaviour

Bloodhounds! I always think this. I looked into getting one but the breed description didn't sound appropriate for us, sadly! We see quite a lot of afghans, but we have a sighthound so move in the right circles, I guess!
if i won the lottery , could buy a nice big house with a huge garden and nice walking areas give up work, i would get a pair of bloodhounds my absolute dream dog , i worry that that they will become just non existant soon , that they will only be bred for flipping police work ,
chaosrabbitland · 22/08/2021 17:16

there is a family in the town near where i work that own a lovely friendly ,very cuddly norweigian elkhound , he is a stunner , iv never seen this dog before and iv never seen another dog owner with one since .
iv seen him only twice when iv been shopping , and he always gets a very good fuss from me lol

Didiplanthis · 22/08/2021 17:20

I have always adored Irish setters. I know every dog is different but does anyone on here have experience of them as family dogs ?

Gingerninja4 · 22/08/2021 17:20

Not seen for years

Afghan hound
Old English sheepdog
Irish wolf hound

Know someone with Red setter not local though

Is a lot of poodle mix type and French bulldogs .
Though are still quite few labs though mostly working stock build .We have 2 Alsations in our road both young one is lovely other a pita (more owner related )

Didiplanthis · 22/08/2021 18:20

All French bulldogs and poodle crosses round town here. Out in the sticks its more labs and quite a few bigger rescue center dogs of uncertain heritage ! I guess people often have dog experience and space to cope with these harder to place ones.

LostArcher · 22/08/2021 18:33

Haven't seen an Afghan Hound or a pekinese for years. We met a doberman puppy today and there is also the cutest corgi and a glorious bassett hound on our rounds. We have a rough collie @BeaucoupFish @gardeninggirl68 A pic for you. I had a beardie growing up. They were really rare then but then got more popular when one won Crufts. Airdales and Skye terriers are seldom seen.

I live very rurally,so see a lot of Border collies,Jack Russells,Norfolk terriers,black labs and cocker spaniels. They are almost all working dogs. I know of only one Cockerpoo.
We have the Bloodhound pack hunt across our farm,you can hear them from miles away,it's spinechilling when they are in full cry.I also see Fox hound,Bassett and Beagle packs locally,the Bassetts look nothing like pet basset hounds.
A friend has a working collie X working foxhound,he's unusual looking,but a lovely dog,very obedient. We have a working collie X working cocker cross and he and his brothers all look different. He's like a large Springer,one brother is like a smooth coated collie and the third is like a black retriever with short legs.

BeaucoupFish · 22/08/2021 19:15

@LostArcher
She is stunning - assuming a she as very pretty but you can never tell, I have not seen one in RL for years, there was a Man who had one called “Beau” on my road when I was really young, about 10yo, all the kids adored her and stroked her on his evening walk they were both very patient

Beautiful rough collie! They are gorgeous dogs.
ArrrMeHearties · 22/08/2021 20:52

I see 2 afghan hounds being walked not too far from where I live. One is black and one is a creamy colour. I like the way their coat swishes when they walk

BeaucoupFish · 22/08/2021 21:14

That’s Marianne Faithfull with her lovely dog, must be the 60’s

We have a 10.5 month old husky. He’s cream and black saddleback with one blue eye and one brown eye. He gets a lot of attention and children always think he’s a wolf. Around here it’s the little dogs that dominate and it’s rare that you see any bigger breeds.

Here is our boy Smile

Huskies everywhere here. And the rescue centres up and down the country are full of them Sad

Ours is now a 'teen' puppy and completely bonkers. He's very friendly with everyone and other dogs - loves the postman!Grin. He has huge FOMO and doesn't like to be alone.

How do you exercise him, must take hours - you can't let them off the lead can you? Do you sled or canicross? Very beautiful

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 22/08/2021 22:10

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it but I am old. Sealyhams. Once common but don't think I have seen one since I was a child.

CoachBeard · 22/08/2021 22:45

@Brownlongearedbat

You don't see Pekinese any more, well I haven't seen one for years. They used to be seen as the ultimate lap dog. Curly coated retrievers. Haven't seen one for over 50 years. I think they are one of the breeds in danger of dying out. Shame really - I wonder if they didn't moult much? Would surely be popular now, especially seeing how much ordinary retrievers moult. There are 3 Dandie Dinmonts in our village, all owned by the same person. Gordon Setters? A friend had one years ago. I think another endangered breed. I have a pedigree poodle. A lot of people assume she's a poo of some sort because she has a puppy cut. I also have a little Yorkie - no rarity value there!
We’ve had three Curly Coated Retrievers over the years. Lost our latest to cancer a couple of months back. Absolutely fabulous dogs but they moult like crazy AND blow their coat at least once, if not twice a year. Way worse than labs or goldies. So much hair. 🤣 I wish they were more popular though. We really want another but no litters at the moment.
StealthRoast · 22/08/2021 23:20

@Clearlyunhinged thank you 😊

He has 4 walks a day. We also have a huge garden which he loves. I called him “free range” the other week and ds who is 18 and has ASD took it quite literal and said “ mum he’s not an egg! “ which made me laugh.

I’m really interested in doing some sort of sport with him. He’s such an active boy, ver friendly and loves people and other dogs.
We keep being told there is another husky who looks like him in our village of about 5,000 people but have never seen it.

He does go off lead in certain places but only with dp. They have developed a very close relationship and the dog massively respects him and vice versa. They built it up and now he is trained to come straight back on request. I’ve not tried it yet and neither has ds. Our dd is only 10 so unable to walk him on her own as he’s so strong and is a puller.

Makes me sad that there are so many huskies in rescue. I can see why though as they need tons of exercise and attention and produce sooo much hair. My previous ridiculous high standards have considerably lowered since having him. Still, we did a lot of research and knew what we were committing to.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/08/2021 00:16

A couple of times when we've been in the outside area of a country cafe, there's been a group of people all with huskies and the waist harness things - it must be a canicross club.

nicecheesegromit · 23/08/2021 13:02

The 57 varieties mongrel - my favourite type of dog!

Clearlyunhinged · 23/08/2021 13:47

StealthRoast

Amazing! Do you have to have a very high fence to stop him from buggering off over the horizon? Canicross or sleding would be fantastic with a dog like that, I always think with any breed your lifestyle has to fit in with what they would do naturally. I have a couple of Pointers and run for miles with them, the idea of a high energy dog just doing 20 mins around the local park is just too sad.

17to35 · 23/08/2021 15:28

Lancashire Heelers.
When I was a child (60 years ago) every other dog was a heeler. Old people had them. Not seen one for years.
