Poorly wolfie

A handhold please. My girl isn't eating. We had blood taken yesterday and a vet check.
Heart rate and temp on the higher side of normal.
Lungs ok. So not pneumonia. Which is common with her breed.
No discharge or other sign of pyometra. (Can't spay giant breeds till later.)
Not dehydrated.
Drinking and weeing.
No diarrhoea
I'm really worried. She's so quiet and subdued.
Phantom pregnancy? First season August?
I'm waffling really. Just want her to be ok.

I wouldnt mind raw feeding as a whole. When i give him his kibble he sometimes doesnt eat it and ive got to mix a bit of gravy through it for him to eat it. Im going to speak to my vet next week and see what they say about it

ItsNachoCheese · 22/10/2017 20:37

I get 10 days at a time usually and its about £30ish. He is on nutraquin for his joints too and for a month of both its £83. The apoquel is the killer cost wise

Wolfiefan · 22/10/2017 20:38

Some vets don't approve. Some think it's great. Different things suit different dogs.
Hygiene is obviously important. But then it would be!

He loved his bones from the butchers he used to sit at the door when we passed as he knew he would get a bone Grin.

BiteyShark · 22/10/2017 20:42

Wolfie if it is a phantom how long does it last? If mine goes off his food or ups his exercise I see his ribs very quickly so I know it's awful when they lose weight starting off from a skinny frame.

IrregularCommentary · 22/10/2017 20:49

Oh, Wolfie, so sorry to hear this. It's so bloody scary when they're not right.

Hope she's eating properly tomorrow. It does sound like a phantom is quite likely. The bloods and the bounciness and the poo are all such good signs.

SkeletonSkins · 22/10/2017 20:52

Wolfie please please get her scanned. Our dog went off his food entirely and I could hear his tummy going sometimes. Then he started being sick. They eventually took him in and scanned him and found he'd eaten some string. He'd never eaten anything he shouldn't have before and sadly he didn't make it. I don't mean to worry you but please do get her scanned if that's what they recommend.

Wolfiefan · 22/10/2017 20:56

But she's just wolfed (pun intended) a chicken foot and a wing too!
If she had eaten something surely we wouldn't get normal poo? It's not good to put a wolfhound under general. Not so sure on sedation. No one can feel anything. Even the vet said most things she would eat would pass through. She's BIG.
She is in a pen overnight and if we go out. She's seriously hardly ever alone.
It's not impossible. But highly unlikely.
If she's not right I will have to go in. I can feel her spine. Her (sternum?) bone between the front legs is prominent.

BiteyShark · 22/10/2017 21:01

I can spend all day with mine and I still sometimes see unexpected non organic things in his poo Confused. Did the vets give a time limit on when they would start to get worried and thus recommend the scan?

Wolfiefan · 22/10/2017 21:12

Nope. No time limit. She seemed to think any kind of obstruction was unlikely. It would have to be something very big to not be passed by a wolfhound!
If it's a phantom I believe it can last for up to 3 weeks. She can't not eat for that long.
Argh.

What about satin balls? It’s a high calorie conditioning treat for off colour raw fed dogs.

There are a few raw feeding forums by the way, if you search. It’s not as scary as you think. There are specific numbers t9 start out with but then you go by what your dog responds to. My dog wants much more than 10% bone.

The hardest thing for me is incorporating organ. Mr Picky won’t eat it if he doesn’t fancy it.

I wish I had a dehydrator- does the house smell of liver when you use it? I do mine in a low low oven, but the non furry family members hate the smell!

BiteyShark · 22/10/2017 21:29

3 weeks eeek. You had better bulk order Wine and Cake.

Wolfiefan · 22/10/2017 21:34

No stinking in the house at all. I think kidney does smell. Fish and tripe stink!
Not sure how to make satin balls. I'm worried about anything that could cause yet another ear infection!

OP posts:
picklemepopcorn · 22/10/2017 22:02

Ooh, that's good to know...

Satin Balls

500gms cheap (because it's contains more fat) mince (beef or lamb)
2 tbsp black treacle
2 tbsp salmon oil (or flax oil - something with omega 3 in it)
half a cup of pure oats
1 raw egg, including shell

Blend all ingredients together and form into balls.

Freeze and defrost and use as required, in addition to dog's normal food, but preferably not at the same time if they are on kibble. Use as a between meal snack in this case.

picklemepopcorn · 22/10/2017 22:02

That,s just copied from a forum...

Wolfiefan · 22/10/2017 22:07

Thanks. The ones I found said cereal which worried me. You superstar! She ate chicken foot and wing tonight. She had a bit of dried liver too.
Added ingredients to shopping list!

Our boy still had some bits pass through as sorry to be graphic but the string wrapped around the intestines and gradually tightened as time passed. He was a big boy too (gsd x Akita) so it's worth checking if no progress made.

Wolfiefan · 22/10/2017 22:22

Thursday she was lethargic and interested in nothing. Yesterday she bounced me and bit my bum to try and get me to play. She loved her walk today and was desperate to play with a lab.
TMI today was a proper big poo. Completely normal. Not bits and not upset tum. Sorry for over sharing!

KC have no way to tell if a bitch is spayed so that doesn't stop you showing. LOADS of shown bitches are spayed :)

Wolfiefan · 22/10/2017 23:33

It's a small world. Someone would blab!

OP posts:
DeepfriedPizza · 23/10/2017 08:49

I hope wolfie eats soon, what a worry Flowers

PuckyMup · 23/10/2017 14:28

How would anyone know? Its a week no exercise and a small wound - done in winter you can even stick a coat on her and no-one would see the slightly bare tummy. If you don't tell no-one knows! At the end of the day its up to you but showing isn't a solid reason not to spay, especially if this is a phantom - they tend to get worse as the dog ages

Wolfiefan · 23/10/2017 15:30

Pucky I have said I will spay if needed. (Would rather actually. No risk of pyometra and no restrictions around a dog in season.) The rules are you can't show a spayed dog. I would hate to be found out and cause an issue.
I will have to manage this phantom. And possibly a couple more. She can't be spayed before 2 at the earliest.

OP posts:
CornflakeHomunculus · 23/10/2017 15:42

The rules are you can't show a spayed dog.

No, they're not.

It's perfectly acceptable to show a spayed bitch or a castrated dog, you've just got to inform the KC before you do. The only reason they want notifying is so that they can check with the vet who performed the op to make sure it wasn't done to hide anything which could have otherwise been detected as a fault in the ring such as cryptorchidism in dogs. It used to be that they would only grant permission to show for spayed bitches if they'd been done for medical reasons, such as pyo, but they've relaxed that a lot in recent years and now grant permission as a matter of course.

From a KC leaflet about showing dogs:

Dogs that have been spayed or castrated are permitted to be exhibited at Kennel Club licensed events. However, the owner of the dog must inform the Kennel Club, prior to exhibition, of the date of the operation, the name of the veterinary surgeon and the practice where the operation was carried out.

BiteyShark · 24/10/2017 07:28

How's WolfieDog?

BiteyDog has spent the last two hours vomiting (foamy water), not himself and shivering despite being under a blanket. Not worth phoning out of hours as my own will be open soon but looks like a vet visit is in order. I wish it was me that was ill instead.
