Where did you get your dog from?

Just curious, given the anti-breeding feeling (been reading the posts on the first page), where your dog actually came from? We got ours from a farmer - with a pet springer spaniel - who didn't realise that the collie (sheepdog) he'd borrowed from his neighbour would be able to climb out of the horsebox window. So no thought at all went into his breeding. So where did yours come from?

Aghhhh for the third bloody time of trying to post [mad]

Mrs any update yet? Still on for this weekend? And more importantly, treats at the ready?
Pacific has he realised yet? Or does he still need more majicking?

I had crap news an hour ago, and to be honest a bit Confused
Contacted Balkan 3 times, then decided to just leave it for them to get back to me or not. Got an email from them, and I quote, " very sadly Kelly die. She got knocked down by car and we did not get to vet in time"

And that was it. So sad, but I have to admit, it has put me off a bit. The none communication I can understand if they are busy, but surely they want homes for all of the dogs they are importing, so they really need to respond to people who actually want to rehome. No idea if they want to home check me, hmmmm.

Anyway, whining over.

BRILLIANT

Keep telling us all the newsSmile

TheHoundsBitch · 23/09/2014 17:57

We got our from Blue Cross. We were worried we wouldn't be able to get a rescue because DS is only 5, but I found that a lot of the rescues were happy home to families with young children but the suitable dogs never made it onto the website because they were rehomed very quickly. This included Battersea, Blue Cross, Dogs Trust, All Dogs Matter and some smaller rescues.
We just kept in contact and visited the rescues until there was a suitable pup.
I think they tricked us into the one we've got, staffy cross my arse

smokeandglitter · 23/09/2014 18:12

We got our dog (still lives with my parents so not with me) from a KC assured breeder. They had just started with Cocker Spaniels (English).

I was hoping to rescue our next one once we're in a better position to but sounds impossible after MrsDeVere's post so we'll be looking into UK rescues in a few years but with our raggies as well it looks like a possible losing battle, in which case it'll be a KC assured breeder again.

My friends got their black lab from a farm, had gone out to buy a rabbit and saw the sign. He was a gorgeous temperament but unfortunately developed severe diabetes and resulting health problems such as blindness. My friends kept him and did the best they could for him but it was upsetting. I've never agreed with people breeding their animals without proper thought etc. but watching this happen was so sad it put me off buying like this ever.

PacificDogwood · 23/09/2014 20:07

Tooold, how very sad - sorry you had to receive that news. Poor dog Sad.
I agree with you: It would make me question how well-throught through a rescue this is… ?

MrsDV I am very Envy

We are no further forward.
Next first Sunday of the month, we'll all 6 of us go on the rescue's monthly walk and all of us meet the dogs. We shall see

LadyTurmoil · 23/09/2014 20:32

tooold I'm really sorry about little Kelly. I hope it won't put you off completely. Have you looked at other rescues? Hope Rescue, Heathlands, Many Tears, Four Paws, Pro dogs direct - just a few I've heard of in the UK.

It's upsetting that they didn't get back to you from BU but I'm sure it's simply a case of too much work and not enough volunteers rather than anything else. Keep us updated ...

LadyTurmoil · 23/09/2014 20:33

Mrs where is the walk next month? I haven't got an AAFA dog but helped them at one time with adoptions... Is it in SE?

LadyTurmoil · 23/09/2014 20:34

Sorry, just realised it was Pacific posting about walk!!

Leroy! Grin
That's a cracker of a name - love it.

Lady, no, sorry, this is in Scotland and a local rescue (which is why it is very convenient to us). It was lovely the last time DS2 and I went.

mrs I used to volunteer for AAFA, answering emails and helping organise homechecks so I know them fairly well (not face to face but via FB). I haven't been doing anything since summer hols because of other stuff going on and Barney arriving. It is amazing what they achieve. Also love the name Leroy, it's great. Good luck!

GloriousGloria · 23/09/2014 21:00

Two are from professional breeders.

Was on a waiting list for both of them.

One of the breeders is a friend if mine. Luckily enough I got one of the puppies from my favourite bitch of hers ( I secretly wanted it to one of her puppies but never let on in case she didn't let me have one if it came from another bitch).

My eldest dog is a rescue though and there's something extra special about him.
I have vowed that my next dog will be a senior rescue though.

DS will be grown and I know that my home will be the perfect retirement home for a senior Xx

My boy came from a Scottish hill farm. My ILs had already taken on his retired kennel mate. He is ex working and sheep dog trial, and the best behaved dog on earth.

The farmers in the valley are very pissed off that he came to us for retirement - but had they been given him they would have ignored his arthritis and worked him into the ground. now they mostly lament that their bitches are not in heat when we visit ( he was international champion as well as multi scotish and Welsh).

We have had to put work in to teaching him to have fun. He does now have some lovely, bouncy , almost puppylike moments.

Leroy is just the best name Smile

Bet you can't wait now, just like Christmas!

Have given up on Balkan dogs, will have a look at other rescues, but feeling hmmmm about it all now.

Cat is very relieved.......

PacificDogwood · 25/09/2014 10:07

How does the matching work when you adopt a dog from abroad?
Obviously they cannot meet you, your children or your other pets?

How does the handover happen? Will he arrive in his own chauffeur-driven limousine? Grin

Tooold, I'd be rather dispirited too, but I am sure the right dog for you is out there and will find you Thanks

Toooldtobearsed · 25/09/2014 13:39

Well, blow me down.......!

I sent one more mail to Balkan, responding to a please for help, and got a reply! Have information and application form now, so just waiting to show DH picture of new 'target dog', give him time to suggest to me that we should go for her, then hopefully we might get a bit further this time Smile

This is Ava

Ava looks a handful Grin - hope it all goes well.

And I hope Leroy does not get sea-sick Grin

DH just said 'Let's have another baby' (I am 48 Grin) and I suggested one with 4 paws and a wet nose would be a good idea...

Lovethesea · 25/09/2014 21:40

So excited about Leroy too! He's going to think he's in heaven when he experiences central heating and sofas!
