Where did you get your dog from?

Just curious, given the anti-breeding feeling (been reading the posts on the first page), where your dog actually came from? We got ours from a farmer - with a pet springer spaniel - who didn't realise that the collie (sheepdog) he'd borrowed from his neighbour would be able to climb out of the horsebox window. So no thought at all went into his breeding. So where did yours come from?

tooold which pup are you interested in? More details please!

We have had Barney for 10 days now - he's still fantastic Grin he's really chilled. After a good walk, he's happy to sleep or lounge around with a bit of a play with his soft toys. He doesn't seem to mind being left alone for a bit, just goes to sleep as far as we can tell.

After a few nights, I left the crate door open at night and we've now taken it out completely so he's in his bed. Lots of chewing opportunities but he doesn't touch anything, except his toys. I've been able to let him off lead already and he comes back. Knows sit, wait when crossing roads etc.

Woke up and barked at all the thunder and lightning last night but quickly went back to sleep.

DDog was abandoned as a few days old puppy on a (Spanish) rubbish dump, our neighbours found the litter, took them in and hand reared them, then had to home 9 husky crosses.

We took ddog at 16 weeks because they were desperate, he's now 14 and has been the most wonderful companion & farm dog, unlike all the awful things you hear about huskys & crosses he's always been great with stock, come when called etc.

Lady dare I tell? Someone might steal her from under my nose Hmm

Oh, okay then

Introducing Kelly
This gorgeous little black bundle of fun is Kelly. Her mum and her sister were rescued from the streets just this last week, circa 15/09/2014. Mom is a golden Labrador, and we are not too sure what Dad is as they were found all alone, abandoned in woodland. There were ten puppies, and 8 have already been homed locally. Just 2 left. Kelly and Cherry her sister.

Well, I know labs in and out, always had labs and retrievers.

We live in the country, and near to the coast, so plenty of room for them to run off some energy.

Only problem is fitting 2 dogs into the caravan when we have a weekend away!

Just waiting to hear now, so keep your fingers crossed for me Smile

Wanted a dog. Saw some Border collies advertised on a country lane at a farm. Stopped car and got one. We had been to dogs homes and were told no due to young dc.

He is an AMAZING dog Grin

MothershipG · 19/09/2014 15:57

8 years ago I was finally in a position to get a dog, DC were 4 & 6 so had a similar problem with rescues and as a novice owner I was a bit worried because of my lack of experience. Also there was a lot less info on the web then.

So ended up getting my Mini Schnauzer from a breeder that, with hindsight, I shouldn't have gone near. But although she's high maintenance and certainly not the easy first dog I was looking for she's sweet as a nut and didn't put me off dog owning so I started looking for Dog 2.

I have a friend who shows Elkhounds and it sounded like fun so I went to Discover Dogs and fell in love with Affenpinschers. Then I found the most wonderful breeder and got my first Affen, but you can't just have 1 Affen, it's impossible, so got another one from her a year later! Grin

Never did end up showing but I wouldn't be without my boys and I will never have another Schnauzer (much as I love the one I've got!)

Yes Schnauzers do seem to fall into 2 camps, the laid back, easy going ones..and the other type! Grin

Mine is over confident, independent, manic, has a high prey drive and thirst for adventure. The positive side of this is that nothing fazes her, she assumes everyone she meets, big or small, will love her and every dog, big or small, will defer to her, she has no fear.

The not so good side is that she has to go through every hole in the fence, pouncing on mice is far too important to be interrupted by a pesky human and she has no fear of being lost. Consequently she doesn't get off lead as often as she'd like. Hmm

Toooldtobearsed · 19/09/2014 21:56

Mrs in case I don't get online tomorrow, GOOD LUCK for SundaySmile

Lady Barney really did just slot right in then! It must be so confusing for them. I was telling a friend today about Balkan Kelly and in all seriousness she asked how I would communicate withy he dog, as she won't understand English............ All I can say is that she is a very dear friend...

Heard nothing. Gutted. I know it is only 24 hrs, but they are updating the website with even more poor mutts.

Hopefully I will hear soon.

Toooldtobearsed · 19/09/2014 21:57

Oh, and we need a furrin dog thread!

LadyTurmoil · 19/09/2014 22:09

Ooh, she's gorgeous tooold I hope you hear soon - have you had a homecheck yet?

mrs good luck with your new arrival, although you're a pro by now!

Toooldtobearsed · 20/09/2014 05:32

Lady, no. No home check, I am still waiting for someone to get back to me to start the process rolling.
Thought I might have heard something by now, hence me being on here to check my emails so early.
I have sent to mails to them via Facebook, so will just have to wait now Sad

My colleague/friend at work had just split with her partner and was having a difficult time financially, as couldn't afford the rent on her house even working two jobs. She wanted to move back in with her parents but couldn't take her two weimaraners with her as parents have a ridgeback too.

On the spur of the moment and mostly just because she needed a safety net and I didn't think she'd really say Yes, I said we'd have them. We were thinking about getting a dog, but hadn't done anything more than that.

She came in the next day to work and asked me if we wanted to meet them and that was it. Despite them hurdling the sofa to greet us and knocking my then 10 year old flying, it was love at first wag.

Three years on, she's since got married and got a gsp. She must have missed them horribly, but never asked for them back. They took aaaaaaaaaages to settle, but are very definitely our dogs now and I wouldn't be without them.

Aw buggery Mrs, how disappointing....
Gives you more time to prepare a welcoming liver cakeGrin

I am really, really, really trying to not get my knickers in a twist about hearing nothing. I know they are volunteers and busy with other things, but it is 2 days now, and no word.
Anyone else adopted through Balkan? The only way to contact seems to be via Facebook.

Ah well, if it is meant to be, it will happen Wink

Well, my future dog once DH has realised he need a dog in his life will be form a local greyhound charity - they seem to have no problem with rehoming dogs with family with children (my youngest is 4).

I grew up with various rescued mutts (also one pedigree pekinese who was pure Eviiiil Grin) and I would have been quite happy with any suitable dog from a local rescue. To my surprise, I arrived at greyhounds or similar sighthound probably being the ideal breed for us - I don't actually like their skinny looks all that much - and sadly there's plenty of suitable dogs to go around.

So, DH needs to come round, then we need a fence to secure the garden, then we get a dog.

My DB and SiL were quite heavily involved in rescues and helping bring dogs from Spain and Greece and Romania. When the time came that they wanted a dog they got a pedigree lab puppy from a private breeder Confused. I found that quite upsetting tbh.

mrslaughan · 20/09/2014 10:30

Toooldtobearsed - OMG _ want to take home both of them - resident dog would be delighted, Husband not so much........wedding anniversary today....wonder if I could dress them up as a present...............

Toooldtobearsed · 20/09/2014 10:33

Go for it! We could meet up for pup birthdays!

I find slowly, slowly works with my DH. Plant the seed, water gently and then let him reap 'his idea'Grin

Works every time, poor bugger just does not know who actually makes the decisions in this house.

PacificDogwood · 20/09/2014 10:34

That is my approach too, Tooold Grin

Toooldtobearsed · 20/09/2014 13:49

Pacific my friend adopts rescued greyhounds and has had some crackers! They need much less walking than you would imagine and just chill all day on the sofa/bed. Lovely, gentle dogs Smile

MagratGarlik · 21/09/2014 23:30

We got one of ours from the RSPCA (dc aged 2 and 5) - no-one laughed at us for wanting a dog with two young dc (even though the 2 year old was and still is very tiny for age). They pointed us in the direction of a dog they thought would be suitable and he has been with us now for 4 years.

We got our second dog from Dogs Trust (dc aged 3 and 6). Again, no-one laughed, no-one told us we couldn't have a rescue dog with young children. Other charities that approved us for rehoming included RGT, Scruples Whippet Rescue and GRWE.
