Where did you get your dog from?

Just curious, given the anti-breeding feeling (been reading the posts on the first page), where your dog actually came from? We got ours from a farmer - with a pet springer spaniel - who didn't realise that the collie (sheepdog) he'd borrowed from his neighbour would be able to climb out of the horsebox window. So no thought at all went into his breeding. So where did yours come from?

Shock at your GM's dog MrsDevere. That's a lot of attitude in a very small bundle.

I am currently trying to persuade myself that I shouldn't be taking on a staffy cross bitch after meeting so many lovely ones out walking.

Terrierterror · 13/09/2014 11:25

Shock The foldy paws on your dog in the middle picture. Too lovely.

What a cunt.

Mine was a rescue. We got him at 10 weeks because his owners felt he cried too much at nights - they'd had him 3 days. He's an unregistered pure breed but from working lines. We've been lucky, caught signs of dysplasia very early so didn't castrate him until very late (over 1yr nearly 18 months) so his growth plates closed properly. That and very careful early feeding and exercise meant he's been fine since. Now 6 years old. I'm sure we'll get problems with arthritis in later life but I'm pleased we managed to avoid the problems in his early years.

First dog i bought from a pet shop(i know, but i was 16) a staff called barnacles. He died age 12 last year from cancer.

Jack russel was from a sign i our local shop. The owner had died and the landlord had found the dog in the house. Hes a little bugger.

We got another staff a few years back, dh got it from another builder at work, i think he found her while walking his dog but couldnt keep her. Shes a lovely thing but she has the smelliest farts ever

Our springer was from the RSPCA. She was born in foster care after her mum was rescued from a back-yard 'breeder' who'd had the mum locked in a shed for six years - the poor love had had five litters and was in a dreadful state, half starved and covered in urine burns from lying in her own mess, but she went to a lovely home in the end. Our pup was rehomed and returned once for being too bouncy, and then ended up with us at about four months old. She's now 12.

Our lurcherycolliething we rescued ourselves. He was abandoned in local parkland, probably by travellers, and was sleeping under bushes and eating out of bins for a month before we gained his trust and were able to catch him and bring him home. We went through the dog warden, checked for microchips etc and nobody was looking for him. He's been with us ten years.

Male dog- from a breeder as there wasn't any rescue for his breed, got him at 8 weeks, saw mother & father and health tests.
Female dog- rescue from bullies in need was found as a stray and obviously abused in her past.
All future dogs will be rescues

TheTruffleHunter · 13/09/2014 11:38

Dogs Trust. They were ace, really helpful as at the time I lived on my own but only working v pt so an older dog with known temperament/training etc more suitable than a pup. Would definitely go through them in the future. Hoping Ddog will live forever tho, [deluded mummy]

We got our first dog from wood green animal shelter. We were taking the kids to a birthday party and were early so went in for a mooch around and came out with a dog. They didn't do a home check which I was a bit surprised at then 2 weeks later I got a phone call at work to say that they were in the area and wanted to pop in and check us out. We had her for 16 years lovely dog.

SauvignonBlanche · 13/09/2014 11:42

That's terrible MrsDeVere, what a heartless bastard!

sunflower49 · 13/09/2014 11:42

She was an unwanted pet of a friend of a friend of a friend. Was about to be abandoned. So a rescue, but not a rescue from a rescue!

All my dogs have been rescues, although I have had puppies too-where the Mother had been abandoned.

Where did you get your dog from?
MamaDoGood · 13/09/2014 11:46

He's a rescue dog in one sense of the word.

He was bought by a friends boyfriend as a gift for her (she doesn't like animals) as a trophy dog to put in her bag (he's a pug)

He was left alone a lot (in a crate) and after two weeks of her having him I went to her house and brought him home.

She was relieved to get rid as had a toddler and was pregnant herself and I was delighted to take him as we had tried (and failed) to get a rescue pug from a center for over 4 years.

It was hard work at first as he was fed bakers and used to being rough handheld by her toddler but, will some patience and lots and lots of love he is an amazing dog now.

I couldn't be without himself now, he's been here 11 months and is the heart of my family.

He's currently sitting on my foot ??

We got our lovely dog from Battersea 8 years ago. We went to have a look and put our names down, convinced it would be a long drawn out process - and walked out with a staffy and a bagful of doggy supplies (and a significantly lighter wallet! )

She was about 3 years old, had a bit of a tough life and had already been rehomed and sent back twice from Battersea alone by twatty owners.

She has been the best dog ever to us. Loving, affectionate, extremely loyal and absolutely adores the dcs since they came along.

When I saw the m/c scene in Marley and Me I wept buckets as it was exactly how my dog was with me.

I bloody love her!

Many Tears Animal Rescue for MuttDog (Collie/Springer/Something)
Ardley Rescue for RottDog RIP (Rottweiller)
Dogs Trust for FatJess (JRT/Corgi)
Stolen from a horrible blokes back garden for GemDog RIP (Collie/Lab)

I'll only ever Rescue, I don't agree with unnecessary breeding.

SignYourNameInBrownAndFlame · 13/09/2014 11:47

A rescue specialising in cockers and springers (we have a springer) who we also volunteer for as home checkers and fundraise for. Our last two dogs have come from there.

EveDallasRetd · 13/09/2014 11:48

Oh, MrsDV

DD was 6mths when we got Jess, 4 when we got Mutt and 6 when we got Rott.
