Where did you get your dog from?

Just curious, given the anti-breeding feeling (been reading the posts on the first page), where your dog actually came from? We got ours from a farmer - with a pet springer spaniel - who didn't realise that the collie (sheepdog) he'd borrowed from his neighbour would be able to climb out of the horsebox window. So no thought at all went into his breeding. So where did yours come from?

Lady can I tell you, I officially hate you now?

I want every dog on that website and have started work on DH to adopt one.

Heart rending stories and gorgeous dogs. I had never heard of them before, but goodness, what brilliant work they do.

No... Been through the whole lot (I think), but not seen Meeko Sad

I have, however, seen about 17 I would like to adopt.....

Oh, if only the lottery would comply with me, I would have a huge forever home for packs of dogs!

DevaDiva · 14/09/2014 21:13

We got our boy from North Clwyd Animal Rescue and he is officially the best dog ever Grin 3 year old chocolate lab and my first ever dog, (husband grew up with dogs)

We've got 2 DCs 9 and I think because of his temperament and the fact that he's very well socialised and the age of my DCs meant the rescue were happy for us to have him.

We took him out a few times and they came and did a home check and then he was ours. I was quite nervous about taking on a rescue dog as we don't know a lot about him other than his family couldn't take care of him anymore. But we got really lucky, a well trained, loveable hound who we wouldn't be without.

From a breeder, Mum was working stock and Dad a rescue, met both of them before choosing. Would have gone for a rescue but was refused as I work shifts and i didn't like the fact that the microchip remained registered to the rescue and if anything happened to me then the dog had to go back to the rescue. Can understand why but my sister and I have always had an understanding that we would take on each others dogs, they holiday with us anyway.

Toooldtobearsed · 14/09/2014 21:34

Oh mrs just oh.......

Oh...

If I was animal free, I would be on the phone first thing in the morning, but I have other pals to think of, this little one needs more than I could give.

But... Oh...

LadyTurmoil · 14/09/2014 22:21

tooold Grin they have lovely dogs, don't they. It's a huge leap of faith to take on a dog you haven't met (took me a long time to pluck up the courage to go for it), so I had to trust the people who had rescued him. You can also get a pretty good idea of the rescue by following the Facebook group. I followed loads of uk rescues but the dogs abroad are just so different. I wanted a mongrel and I reckon that if he's managed to survive on the streets, he's probably pretty tough.

A farm. saw mum and she was a gorgeous working cocker (as pups were advertised). Jarvis 's legs kept on growing and growing though and he's definitely a sprocker/springer. But no worries, we love him.

Jarvis Springer isn't as funny though, sadly.

Carpaccio · 15/09/2014 11:52

A breeder. I found the puppy list on the website for the breed's club and called breeders that had puppies.
I've had dogs before and have met breeders. I felt very comfortable with this one and we met the mum and the puppies as well as the other dogs (other breed) she had. We had a long talk about everything.

Told her we were keen to take the puppy, arranged for a time to pick her up a few weeks later when she was old enough.

We had an appointment with another breeder, but I really didn't feel comfortable with her. She wouldn't tell us if the parent dogs were from working or show stock, if health checks had been done and so on so cancelled our appointment with her.

I don't regret our descision for a minute. Our dog is healthy and has a lovely temperament. She's chilled and has always been awesome.

SauvignonBlanche · 15/09/2014 13:21

to DevaDiva, our gorgeous black Lab came from North Clwyd Animal rescue too, they're great, aren't they?

Toooldtobearsed · 18/09/2014 21:33

Ohhhhhhh, what have I done?

Started the ball rolling to adopt a pup from Balkan Underdogs....

Wish me luck!

PuffinsAreFicticious · 18/09/2014 22:09

DBeagle 1 rescued from a friend in Germany, long drive, best dog ever!

DBeagle 2 from the breed rescue. He has been a lot of work to turn into the nice young man he is now. He was treated horribly as a pup and has what could best be described as canine PTSD. You can see the scars they left on him. They make me very angry.

DBeagle 3 is also from the breed rescue. He's a love. But old and grumpy and just isn't settling in after a good long while. We're debating taking him back to the rescue. I feel like I'm betraying him, but he's not happy, the other 2 aren't happy so what can we do?

CMOTDibbler · 18/09/2014 22:23

Both of mine are from Evesham Greyhound and Lurcher rescue. Cmotdog is a failed hare courser (he has no prey drive at all), and was handed in by the travellers he was with at 6 months. Puppys mum was found stray and heavily pg, and he was born in foster.

EGLR don't have any rigid rules about rehoming afaik

Ours was from a breeder but not a puppy - he was 10 months old and needed a 'pet home' because he'd been kept for show but he got alopaecia - his loss was our gain.

theeternalstudent · 18/09/2014 23:41

Here's my rescue. She wasn't from a UK rescue centre either. Lots of fear aggression initially. It's taken a bit of work for her to trust but we are just in love now. I'm very proud of my beautiful girl.

Where did you get your dog from?
isseywithcats · 19/09/2014 00:36

i got my present dog from a rescue in cyprus, shes a cypriot hunting type hound, she had been used as a breeder for years poor love,

she is now 10 years old, she was 8 when i adopted her, i didnt want a puppy and sadly most of the rescue dogs here in the uk are staffies and i didnt want a bouncy staffie,

i didnt know how big she was as she looked smaller on the pics, but i wanted a dog that is good with cats as i have 5 cats, she is a dream very gentle, she had isshoos when i got her 2 years ago, very timid thought i was going to hit her if i went to stroke her but she has got over that now, and due to all the litters she had she is incontinent overnight but i just clean up the wee on the kitchen floor its no biggy

DuchessofKirkcaldy · 19/09/2014 01:25

Similar story to the OP.
After losing our darling old girl we went straight to our local rescue. We nearly came home with a lovely little staffy cross until we told them we had a cat.

A friend then told us about a litter of accidental puppies born on a local farm. (Dog got out of stable where it was sleeping overnight as owner awayConfused)
Fell in love with a little black bundle, now a much larger black bundle snoring next to me.Smile

Toooldtobearsed · 19/09/2014 05:20

Oh, mrs brilliant!

Waiting with baited breath now. Kept showing DH pics of gorgeous dogs from both websites. He kept saying 'nice/sweet/ahh, but no, not for us'. Yesterday, showed him a new pic, he glanced at the photo and said 'yes, that's the one'.

Cat is not impressed Grin
