Where did you get your dog from?

Just curious, given the anti-breeding feeling (been reading the posts on the first page), where your dog actually came from? We got ours from a farmer - with a pet springer spaniel - who didn't realise that the collie (sheepdog) he'd borrowed from his neighbour would be able to climb out of the horsebox window. So no thought at all went into his breeding. So where did yours come from?

Aghhhhh, FFS, I DOG walk, not DH walk. Wouldn't take him.....

Dirtybadger · 13/09/2014 16:16

A local authority pound. I volunteer there. My dog is a SBT so wouldn't have found a rescue space. Quite a few end up with lovely homes with volunteers.

There is no reason I would need to go to a breeder. There are dogs in rescue who can serve all sorts of functions and as long as I can meet the dogs' needs and the dog can meet mine (i.e. personalities suit) there are no further requirements, for me.

We got ours from Battersea , he is perfect !

petswinprizes · 13/09/2014 17:36

Wow, I had no idea that the doghouse was so popular! And it's good (or bad?) to see so many dogs from rescues given homes. Makes you wonder who is buying the puppies?

My girl came from our local council pound . She was a bit of a mare to begin with - fear aggression with other dogs but brilliant with people. She has settled down nicely now though.

The Lurcher came from Lurcherlink and The 'Puppy' came from Heathlands. Both were born into rescue and DS was 2 when we got the Lurcher and 4.5 when we got The Puppy.

I can see why few people on this thread admit to getting their dog from anywhere but a rescue....the strength of feeling often runs high.

We got our pup from a breeder - dh was reluctant to have a dog - he was quite scared of them, never had one growing up, his dad had been attacked by dogs several times, a pup made him feel more reassured than getting a dog. And with rescues refusing to home dogs with children, we didn't wish to join a long waiting list for the dog they would rehome with kids, so we bought a pup. Worked out well, dh is smitten, the pup is great....I think dh would have been fine with a rescue too but he just felt too anxious about not knowing their history.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 13/09/2014 18:27

I'm trying to get a dog but with 2 small people (2 and 4.5), 2 cats & me working 3 days a week it's proving hard...dogs trust haven't said no but rspca did. Surely it's better for a dog to go to a loving home even if they are left alone 3 days a week (have said I'd be willing to get a dog sitter/go to doggy day care) than be in a kennel all the time?

I have a thread running about it.

I got my dog when she was a few weeks old from a rescue (Celia Hammond - they are in London and sussex) and my kids were both under 10. But the rescue did already know us as we'd adopted two cats from them.

Dog one came from a breeder. A very good breeder. She is an amazing little Bulldog.

Dog two I kind of rescued in a way I guess. He is a Chihuahua with a lot of issues. He was advertised online and would probably have been put to sleep if I hadn't taken him in. He has an awful bad overshot jaw so has feeding issues. Lots of anxiety so hides in a corner if you try to pick him up and he hates outside so can't go for walks but thankfully he is so tiny that he does get enough exercise in the house and garden with me. He is full of issues but I love him to death.

He will cuddle me for hours on end and follows me around the room. It takes him three hours to eat a meal and he weighs just less than 3 pounds. He is probably far from a dog as you can get but the love he gives me is amazing. He isn't exactly trainable as you can't coach him and he will only eat one brand of food and has never once eaten anything else. All the normal doggy treats they love and he refuses to even try them, after two years of trying I give up, he has no interest. He is a good dog though so it hasn't caused many issues.

Like I said, he has huge issues but at this point he has a good quality of life I believe, but I know that is something that will need to be reassessed as he ages. Feeding him takes up hours of my evening as someone, usually me, has to sit with him. Silly dog refuses wet food which would be so much easier. He eats his kibble, but one by one and he gums it, so it is a very long tedious process, however he enjoys eating it.

I couldn't love him more though.

From a ChampDogs breeder.

Dog #1 was from a Preloved advert, being given up by inexperienced owners, only a token amount of money changed hands. We had approached a number of rescues prior to this but were turned down every time as we have no garden.

Dog #2 was from a breed specific rescue who managed to look past the garden issue.

Dog #3 will be a puppy from a breeder as I'm looking for a very specific type of working dog and as brilliant as my current two are they cannot quite compare to some of the purpose bred dogs available for the sports we compete in and the competition bug has bitten hard.

We got our puppy 4 weeks ago from a breeder. We couldn't find a suitable dog from a rescue centre - the vast majority said no homes with children. Only the Dogs Trust have had a couple of dogs suitable for families but they were dogs that don't get on with other dogs and where I'd be walking him/her we'd be meeting lots of other dogs so they weren't suitable for us.

Our puppy is 12 weeks old today and he's an absolute joy. He's been going to puppy socialisation classes both with a local trainer and at our vet, and he loves everyone. He was sitting at the living room door this morning at 8:30 with his lead in his mouth asking me why we weren't taking DD to school today. Grin

EasyToEatTiger · 13/09/2014 20:31

Our first 2 came from Battersea, then we got a young dog from an advert and our latest is from a lovely private organisation.

LEMmingaround · 13/09/2014 20:39

Ddog1 from the local paper. Family had a litter of pups from the fils dog. Was meant to be border terrier x patterdale but could see the mother was a crossbreed but such a lovely pup and lovely family we took him. Lovely dog.

Ddog2 from dogs trust and i adore him.

Catypillar · 13/09/2014 20:43

We got SpringyThing from Springer Rescue Scotland last year. DS was 5 at the time. She had been fostered in a home with a two year old child for six weeks before we got her. They will rehome dogs to people with children of any age if they think you can give the dog a good home and they are confident that the dog is fine with children. All the dogs are fostered in people's homes before being adopted so they can get a good look at the dog's behaviour. The woman who did our home check said that they consider it to be their fault if a dog bites someone, because they either missed something in the dog's behaviour or decided to give a dog to the wrong person. The woman who had fostered SpringyThing was really helpful in giving advice about getting her settled in and they also have a dog behaviour expert who can help if needed.

Tipsykisses · 13/09/2014 21:15

1st one rescued by us at 7 weeks in a terrible state but we nursed him back to health , he sadly still left for rainbow bridge at 2years old .

Second one was from a very respected breeder of working dogs who heard our boy had passed away & kindly offered us one of her pups as my Ds & I were grieving so badly.

Third one was sort of rescued by us at 3 months old , he was being kept in a shed to be used as a stud dog .

We are now in the process of sorting our finances out so we can buy a bigger house with a lot more room so that hopefully we can foster dogs in the future !

dotdotdotmustdash · 14/09/2014 09:11

Mr Perfect, the collie, came from Friends of the Animals (RCT) in South Wales almost 3 years ago.

LadyTurmoil · 14/09/2014 16:43

I've just adopted Lazydog through Balkan Underdogs and previously fostered for Action Aid for Animals.

We've only had him a week but he's fantastic! No accidents in the house/car/crate at all, loves a decent walk but then is completely chilled at home, eats and sleeps well. I didn't want a puppy and he's about 21mths. I don't usually go for fluffy types, but kept looking at his picture and decided he needed a home here!

As I was adopting from overseas, I tried to ask as many questions as possible of the carer in Bulgaria regarding his temperament ... he will probably get a lot cheekier in the next few weeks but it seems to be working out very well Grin

Devil dog was adopted directly from the pound. Not something I'd recommend. Use a rescue where the dogs are vetted and you have back up.

Whippy was an unsold puppy who landed on my doorstep after her "breeder" decided he would drown her if she hadn't gone that night. We had a mutual friend who asked if I could help find a home for her to prevent her untimely death. She came to stay for the weekend before going to a rescue. That was 4 years ago Hmm

mrslaughan · 14/09/2014 20:08

Ours came from a breeder after much research and debate within the family....Dh would not consider a rescue, which was a shame.....but his view was not helped by the fact so many would not consider rehoming to families with children.
I would like to get a second dog, and if I didn't get another of Ddog1, a whippet is definitely on my list and I spend a lot of time looking a scruples website.......

Camsie30 · 14/09/2014 20:13

I adopted my German spitz 7 years ago from Foal Farm rescue in Biggin Hill, Kent. He was 6 months old. It's a tiny place full of so much love and care, and he is the most wonderful dog. Clever, funny and loyal. I feel very lucky to have found him and I hope he feels the same!!!
