My husband and I discovered this at Xmas after getting Season 1 DVD from his elderly uncle (how cool is said elderly uncle) and we are completely addicted. We're on Season 4 now - anyone else addicted too?

The first series of the Sopranoss was excellent so worth a go if you haven't seen it. (We lost interest after one though, which isn't good.)
The only other thing I have seen that has sucked me in as the Wire has us sucked (um, if yo see what I mean) is...
really old...
but available on dvd...
I Claudius!
So if anybody is not an old gimmer young enough to have not seen it - or hasn't seen it since the 70s - then I hugely recommend it! We have watched and rewatched and spend the time between sessions thinking about Roman intrigue. Have drawn the line at speaking Latin in tribute though. Will stick with sshhhhhiiiiiiittttteeeeee

notyummy · 18/03/2010 21:26

Tbh pfft, BSG is a lot more 'realistic' than Fringe. There are no aliens - only humans and robots (who look like humans....) No time travel/teleporting etc etc. Better to think of it as a political drama/thriller set in space rather than sci fi.

And please don't think of the cheesy 70s original!

notyummy · 18/03/2010 21:28

I Claudius - watched on BBC 2 in 1986 and it was on its 99th repeat even then! Good though! Derek Jacobi is excellent.

Francagoestohollywood · 18/03/2010 21:59

I forgot to say how much I love Bunny Colvin!

stressed2007 · 19/03/2010 09:28

oh let's keep this thread going - I am distraught I have nothing left to watch now I have finsihed the wire. It was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo GREAT

redwhiteandblue · 19/03/2010 13:08

I was dreading season 5 because had heard the plot was lost etc

I absolutely loved it! Yes, some events were a bit extreme but the characters had been pushed to extreme measures

I cried hopelessly during the final montage, knowing I'd never see the characters again. I though they wrapped it brilliantly, total ambiguity, no easy answers, but little rays of joy like the bit with Slim Charles

Iklboo · 19/03/2010 13:14

My comment on The Wire? Sooooo brilliant. I finished watching it last year. If you've not seen season 5 yet it is superb.

Also love The Shield and The Sopranos too though.

Idris Elba - you just would wouldn't you?

Francagoestohollywood · 19/03/2010 13:28

Redwhiteandblue, I totally agree re the final montage and re Slim Charles

Idris Elba is a very handsome man, I'm not sure I would though... he is too tall!

hophophippidtyhop · 19/03/2010 13:37

New David Simon show, Treme, (someone else mentioned it) trailer here. Def recommend the shield and Homicide for anyone who hasn't seen them yet. Have been a Pelecanos fan for a while, his books are great!

firsttimemama · 19/03/2010 13:40

Just seen this thread and am now off to Ebay to buy the set. I watched it first on BBC2 with the aid of Sky+. My DH is desperate to see it again. Almost would have forgotten if I haddn't seen it mentioned earlier and whilst there was plenty of eyecandy by far the most impressive physiche was Daniels my oh my was he FIT. Even more impressive given his age - which I don't know but would be around 45+ish I imagine. Arrrriiiiitte

redwhiteandblue · 19/03/2010 13:41

Favourite characters in order

Omar
Bunny

Stringer
Freamon
Prop Jo
Bunk
McNulty
Prez

Went off Greggs as the series developed, I think they slightly left her character drift. Did you know she now runs a drug addiction charity in Baltimore in rl?

And D'Angelo is married in rl to the female reporter in season 5

Loujalou · 19/03/2010 14:25

You are right about Greggs they turned her into a mini McNulty and then forgot about her. Loved Prez especially in series 4. I liked it when they showed what happened to him in series 5 and he was all respected.

redwhiteandblue · 19/03/2010 15:14

Spoiler alert

Yup, Prez was one of those great twists where he started off an apparently irredeemable asshole and ended up majestic. Ditto Carver. Ditto (imo) Prop Jo

Francagoestohollywood · 19/03/2010 15:55

Greggs -imho- drifted off in season 3, but started to pick up again in season 4 when she gets transferred to homicide, and proves herself "real police" iyswim.

Prez is fantastic, and yes, he started off really badly, but by the beginning of season 2 I loved him!

Francagoestohollywood · 19/03/2010 15:56

to be "real police"

I was fond of Prop Joe too. It's bizarre how you come to care for drug dealers, I mean...

Sputnik · 19/03/2010 16:12

Yes but she was totally "real police" to begin with, no?

Prop Joe, love the fact that Baltimore's drugs kingpin spends his days in a back room fixing toasters.

Sputnik · 19/03/2010 16:29

Re Idris Elba, I think it is a tribute to his acting abilities really that although he is a very fine looking man I felt, (like MM) far too threatened to find him fanciable. At one point in Season 3 I was feeing menaced by the sight of a polo shirt hanging in the wardrobe.

mehdismummy · 19/03/2010 16:34

that man (idris) could throw me on the bed and do whatever the hell he liked!! i mean the man looks like he can!!

mehdismummy · 19/03/2010 16:37

it would be rude not to!!!

Francagoestohollywood · 19/03/2010 16:41

Yes, totally agree with Sput re idris elba/stringer.

Greggs... mmmm it's complicated, I'll be back

mehdismummy · 19/03/2010 16:49

is homicide worth a go or will i only be disappointed coz its not the wire!!

redwhiteandblue · 19/03/2010 17:28

Oh and I forgot the fabulous Brother Mouzone

And my favourite line when Cheese discovers Omar's bitch had a gun in her fanjo. "That was unseemly shit."

twosofar · 19/03/2010 18:12

Can i jump in? The Wire is the best thing ever to happen to the telly and anyone who doesn't get it must be wrong in the head..you feel me?

stressed2007 · 19/03/2010 19:36

I am just so loving this thread.

I miss this show so much I think I have some kind of psychological condition.
