My husband and I discovered this at Xmas after getting Season 1 DVD from his elderly uncle (how cool is said elderly uncle) and we are completely addicted. We're on Season 4 now - anyone else addicted too?

OP posts:
HarveysFurniture · 18/03/2010 15:50

I just started watching this and yes, completely agree, it is so addictive. I had friends tell me how good it was, but didn't think I'd like it this much. Hope the series keep coming! Liz

I have been desperately looking for something to replace the Wire in our evening viewing - would anyone who's seen both recommend The Shield?

PfftTheMagicDragon · 18/03/2010 16:30

When Charlie Brooker did the webchat I asked him what I should replace The Wire with as I couldn't find anything to match up. Apart from Mad Men (which I already watch and enjot immensely) he suggested some ridiculously hard to find thing called Spiral. Don't know if anyone has heard of it?

sickofsocalledexperts · 18/03/2010 18:14

I have not heard of Spiral but did think of Mad Men - does it give you that same "I've just got to watch one more episode, even though it's already half midnight" as the Wire did for us?

TheMysticMasseuse · 18/03/2010 18:15

LBC the thing that drives me insane and that 90% of fanfics seem to obsess over is "pinching the bridge of his nose". I mean, seriously, who does that in RL????

TheMysticMasseuse · 18/03/2010 18:16

Ooooppps sorry, wrong thread!!!

Pfft will know what I am talking about though!

PfftTheMagicDragon · 18/03/2010 18:26

haha! MM it annoys me too!

TheMysticMasseuse · 18/03/2010 18:32

Pfft, I thought I was the only person in the world who can simultaneously love the Wire and Twilight fanfic. I feel much better knowing I am not the only one!

PfftTheMagicDragon · 18/03/2010 18:42

sickof - no, it doesn't IMO> It is very slick and well produced, well made and excellent characters. But I find it is more of a slow burner, you don't think MOREMOREMORE when you have finished an episode. Worth watching though.

I was like that with Lost (though it has gone downhill) it was so excellent and different at the start, one day I watched 8 episodes back to back! DH and I were supposed to be watching them together so I had to pretend I hadn't seen them and watch them again

PfftTheMagicDragon · 18/03/2010 18:43

MM- I like highbrow and lowbrow - I specialise in all kinds of brow

sickofsocalledexperts · 18/03/2010 19:04

We watched 1-5 twice in the space of 6 months. Now I'm wondering what's an appropriate gap to start watching it all for the 3rd time? Agree re using the pathetic speak with DH - both trying to get the "ar- ri" thing they do for alright (and failing miserably)

tallulahbelly · 18/03/2010 19:35

"DH and I were supposed to be watching them together so I had to pretend I hadn't seen them and watch them again"

Pfft - I've done that with so many things - Dirty, Sexy Money, Dexter, Huff, The Wire, Deadwood, Sleeper Cell, Prison Break, Nip/Tuck, Lost (he got bored with those last three but failed to tell me for ages it was okay for me to watch them alone) etc.

He's just not as dedicated as me. Or perhaps has a bit less time on his hands...

notyummy · 18/03/2010 19:39

OK, a replacement for the Wire.

Are you ready?

BATTLESTAR GALATICA

Absolutely awesome. Allegory on the war on terror blah, blah. But also exciting, well acted and fantastically written.

(Also - just as an aside. My DH is military and all the scenes with them on the radios during battle apparently they are using completely authentic language and it is exactly what would happen in 'dog fight' in an air battle.)

Will stop now.

stressed2007 · 18/03/2010 19:43

Mad Wire fan here. I will have lots of questions on previous posts. First what is this referring to:

"And I recommend to read the Guardian the wire re-up (though it's full of spoilers)"

Francagoestohollywood · 18/03/2010 20:07

stressed, it's the guardian blog where they discuss each episode from the wire. But, don't read it if you haven't seen the whole series yet.

the wire re-up: strictly for those who've already watched it all.

Also, if you haven't seen it all, be aware of youtube, lots of spoilers there as well...

Francagoestohollywood · 18/03/2010 20:10

Notyummy, other people have suggested battlestar galactica to me as well.

I must confess, that although I do like my television programs, I've never felt so strongly about any other program/series like I do for the wire.

Only a few movies have left such an impact, and trust me I love movies as well (both highbrow and lowbrow )

notyummy · 18/03/2010 20:26

I know what you mean franca. BSG (as we fans call it...) is certainly very different to the Wire and may not replace it in your heart....but I would certainly recommend as an interim measure!

Have you seen Generation Kill by the same writers? Not as good, but absorbing and full of toned semi naked male flesh to help the plot...

Boco · 18/03/2010 20:30

Deadwood was my replacement for the wire - v. good. Ian McShain is ridiculously and surprisingly brilliant.

Francagoestohollywood · 18/03/2010 20:33
mehdismummy · 18/03/2010 20:38

boco i have a feeling we have met before?

mehdismummy · 18/03/2010 20:40

what did the george guy write?

Francagoestohollywood · 18/03/2010 20:49

the night gardener

Drama city (read by renaldo in the cheerios scene)

the turnaround etc etc

PfftTheMagicDragon · 18/03/2010 20:52

I tried generation kill but I have a strong dislike for war/soldier stuff so couldn't stick it, though I hear it is supposed to be excellent.

I was thinking about starting The Sopranos, have never seen it. Have considered BSG, but generally the furthest I go towards Sci Fi is Fringe. Maybe i should reconsider.

mehdismummy · 18/03/2010 20:53

is there one i should read first? do they follow on?

Francagoestohollywood · 18/03/2010 21:04

Mehdismummy, I've only just started The night gardener, and I'm enjoying it so far. I think his books are all set in Washington dc.

Pftt, yes, I'm usually not that attracted to science fiction, but I heard lots of good things about Battlestar.

Also, taking inspiration from star trek, we could organize our the wire convention and dress up like the wire characters!
