My husband and I discovered this at Xmas after getting Season 1 DVD from his elderly uncle (how cool is said elderly uncle) and we are completely addicted. We're on Season 4 now - anyone else addicted too?

one of my fav scenes (no spoilers, don't worry)

MuffinToptheMule · 17/03/2010 13:22

We've just finished watching season 5. I absolutely loved The Wire but I did become bored by the politics of seasons 4 and 5.

My favourite character is bubs.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 17/03/2010 13:34

Don't watch if offended by the f word!

the famous crime scene

DomesticG0ddess · 17/03/2010 14:31

My OH saw Stringer Bell on one of the bridges in London (Waterloo?), filming something. True that! He said he looked at him. I was so jealous.

Oh, I just LOVE Omar.

We found that while watching Season 1 at Xmas and we had a bit more time and could watch more than one in a go, that we just could not stop calling each really bad names. And we have watched it with subtitles all the way through.

Has anyone watched the special features interview with the guy who wrote the book - basically it was a piece of journalism and he says that all the character in the series are based on real people.

why subtitles?

Francagoestohollywood · 17/03/2010 15:49

I think season 4 is a masterpiece. And so moving.

littlerach · 17/03/2010 15:53

The Corner is also like an explanation of the whole drugs/Baltimore thing. Quite horrific to watch though.

The Shield is v good too.

And Damages.

MummyElk · 17/03/2010 15:54

as converts then... convince me to keep going?? we're on episode, er, 4 of series 1... not completely into it....have the entire box set to go?!!
really not into it. Or even half as gripped as I was told I would be.
Am I missing the point?

Chipper10 · 17/03/2010 16:00

This is my favourite show ever, absolutely BRILLIANT and my DH and I did all the Baltimore Drug Dealer speak too. I can't express how amazing it is.

MummyElk - you must keep watching, it will grow on you and then you will be watching 2-3 episodes a night and dreaming it too. My DH took a while to get into it too.

As someone mentioned earlier, I too am jealous you have it all to discover. When you have watched that you have to watch Generation Kill which the same writers did post The Wire.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 17/03/2010 16:01

The best series was the education one - the writers said they they wanted to do more than they did. Some great characters.

Headbanger · 17/03/2010 16:03

The Shield is better. Sorry, but it just is.

Francagoestohollywood · 17/03/2010 16:17

Mummyelk, it takes a few episodes to get into The Wire. My suggestion is to keep going... but then again, it might not be everyone's cup of tea

Yes, I dream of the wire. I even want to visit Baltimore!

assumetheposition · 17/03/2010 16:17

Elk - you need the subtitles. I hadn't the faintest idea what they were going on about to start with. Eventually you get the hang of the language but the subtitles help to start off.

It's a bit like Shakespeare. In Act 1 it's tricky to follow but your ear tunes into it after a while.

I got really into it in the final episodes of series 1. I would say D'Angelo is a really good character to get you into how the whole gang culture operates.

Francagoestohollywood · 17/03/2010 16:19

I realized there was no going back for me when I dreamt to snog Omar...

Francagoestohollywood · 17/03/2010 16:21

I agree assumetheposition. The show started to grow on me when I began to focus on D'Angelo's personal growth. And wallace.

tallulahbelly · 17/03/2010 16:40

Elk - I liked it from the end of the first episode but agree with the others, when you learn more about D'Angelo and his disillusionment it gets better.

Also you are just on the verge of the incident that really sets Omar off on his mission against the Barksdales which is gripping.

Oh I want to watch it all over again.

TheMysticMasseuse · 17/03/2010 16:44

Oh I feel y'all. I LOOOOOOOOVEEEE The Wire. We just finished season 4, and got season 5 in the post today.

Season 4 has left me shattered and emotionally spent. But I would do it all over again.

I heart the Bunk.

tallulahbelly · 17/03/2010 16:45

Franca - I loved Omar too but we wouldn't be his type .

Yet however beautiful I thought Omar's face - the scar made it even better - I found his body a bit of a disappointment.

A truly fabulous body belonged to Daniels. If only he could have been encouraged to pop a paper bag over his head during topless scenes

CheeeseOnToast · 17/03/2010 16:45

Oh ggooooodddd I NEED to watch it again now.

I absolutely LOVED this series, and I also found that DP and I were talking to each other in this whole other language, it was just hilarious. I might actually start watching it again soon.

Agree with the previous poster about the best season being the education one, i think, or the one focusing on D'Angelo. Not too keen on the political parts really but I still loved it all.

TheMysticMasseuse · 17/03/2010 16:46

You need to invest in teh Wire. Season 1 is laying the ground. Season 2 is a bit of a diversion (but prob my favourite season, I love Frank Sobotka). Season 3 leaves you giddy with a climax that has taken 3 years to build. Season 4 breaks your heart. I don't know what season 5 will bring.

Francagoestohollywood · 17/03/2010 16:48

Masseuse, the first episodes of season 5 are imho a bit . Hang in there, because it gets better and makes sense (it doesn't to begin with, imo).

I was expecting to come to a personal "closure" when it ended, but I'm still here, thinking about it and wishing there was more.

Gosh I'm pathetic.

CheeeseOnToast · 17/03/2010 16:48

Oh and the Hamsterdam bit. Awesome.

LOL tallulah, completely agree about Daniels! The sex scene, my word. But head strangely reminiscent of an alien...?! Or is that a bit mean!?

TheMysticMasseuse · 17/03/2010 17:05

Nah Daniels doesn't do it for me. He is too muscled.

However, season 2, episode 2- McNulty's butt. I rest my case.

sickofsocalledexperts · 17/03/2010 17:09

Surely Stringer Bell is the most beautiful man and character in whole series? And when you hear him speak in his normal English accent, you realise what a great actor Idris Elba is too. McNulty has nothing on Stringer for me! Also love Omar, though not in the same way

CheeeseOnToast · 17/03/2010 17:14

Agree about Stringer Bell. He lives near me too, in Hackney. I think I actually saw him a few months ago, but couldn't be quite sure.

I nearly ran after him!
