My husband and I discovered this at Xmas after getting Season 1 DVD from his elderly uncle (how cool is said elderly uncle) and we are completely addicted. We're on Season 4 now - anyone else addicted too?

OP posts:

OMG Cheese, he lives near you!!! I think I would become as pathetic as a teenage fan if I bumped into him. Wonder if he is really tall and big, like he looks on TV (so many actors, when you see them in real life, are teeny weeny)

CheeeseOnToast · 17/03/2010 17:25

He did seem quite tall, in fact now I'm just sure it was him, hehe, but I was on the bus so couldn't readily compare him to other people/me. And I was v excited so memory is unlikely to be trusted. I was tempted to get off at the next stop and run back but thought that would be seen as rather silly by DP

Did anyone see McNulty on Have I Got News For You a few months back? It was very strange to listen to his usual English accent, it felt all wrong. Strange and wrong. Still would, though

TheMysticMasseuse · 17/03/2010 17:33

LOL Cheese I keep picturing Cheese from the Wire

I found the character of Stringer Bell really intimidating. Spoiler in his scenes with De he actually scared me, he was so dominating (physically and emotionally). end

I think if I met Idris Elba I would run a mile

Now, the real question. Carcetti- would you? could you?

CheeeseOnToast · 17/03/2010 17:40

Definitely not. Too slimy I think.

Loujalou · 17/03/2010 17:41

No I couldn't do Carcetti. Could do Stringer though. Mmmmmm.. Hackney you say. Not so far from me....

CheeeseOnToast · 17/03/2010 17:50

He also makes music (Stringer this is) and released an album a few weeks ago. I follow him on twitter

mehdismummy · 17/03/2010 18:19

the sex scene where stringer strips off is softporn!!! franks nephew was nice too! carcetti no nope no! is mcnulty english then? i am gutted they have made no more series i loved the characters

TheMysticMasseuse · 17/03/2010 18:24

I have a theory that The Wire is a demographics-specific phenomenon. North London, professional 30 something married (or in a relationship) with young kids, used to be hip and now struggling (at times desperately) to hang on to the cool things. I have overheard many such types attempting to have "Baltimore" conversations on Hampstead Heath and it was quite cringeworthy (though DH and I do it often and with great enjoyment, although pathetic results. we still can't master the O'aye...)

I fit the bill completely. Except I have now moved to Switzerland, where I now struggle to hang on to the North London, 30something, used to be cool thing as the closest thing to cool I'll ever encounter in RL...

What about you?

mehdismummy · 17/03/2010 18:26

word!!

TheMysticMasseuse · 17/03/2010 18:27

Dominic West is an old etonian!

My post above was rather shallow. In truth, I do think the Wire is one of the best things (not jsut shows, but films, narratives, social critiques, etc) I have ever engaged with.

The way it slowly comes together, the way a problem (say, education) is attacked from so many angles, the way it refuses to romanticise or allow the viewer any easy way out, the way the characters keep failing to redeem themselves... I don't know. It's simply amazing.

And I can honestly say that the Wire saved my marriage. DH and I hadn't had a shared interest in ages, and thanks to it, we got talking, again, about "big things" (in a crap Baltimore accent)

mehdismummy · 17/03/2010 18:30

i am down with that girl!!

sickofsocalledexperts · 17/03/2010 18:47

It is pathetic but I still like to put "true that" in texts etc, to flush out fellow wire fans!

mehdismummy · 17/03/2010 18:48

i like to say shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttttttttttttteeeeeeeeeeee!!

tallulahbelly · 17/03/2010 18:52

I don't think you were right Mystic.

I love the Wire but am conscious when raving about it that I sound like an embarrassing middle class hipster and should leave people alone to enjoy Strictly Come Dancing if they that's what the really want.

"Like here is another thing beloved of ageing middle class hipsters"

I really hope that worked.

I appreciate Idris Elba's physical attributes but hated the character more and more which killed it for me.

Didn't explain why I fancied Avon though

tallulahbelly · 17/03/2010 18:53

Sorry Mystic I meant to say 'I don't think you were wrong'

Concentrating too hard on getting the link to work.

pmsl!!

mehdismummy · 17/03/2010 18:57

avon mmm might!!

PfftTheMagicDragon · 17/03/2010 18:58

I had a real thing for the guy that played Carcetti back when he was in Queer as Folk, but he seems to have got oilier as he has aged.

Idris Elba is just lovely looking.

tallulahbelly · 17/03/2010 19:07

Anyone who hasn't watched the whole thing - beware of Youtube.

A lot of the titles are spoilers.

See, I really am that protective of this show

mehdismummy · 17/03/2010 19:09

true that!!!

mehdismummy · 17/03/2010 19:09

was he in as queer as folk, thought i recognised him!

assumetheposition · 17/03/2010 19:12

Yes Dominic West went to Eton. There's a great scene in series 2 I think when he's trying to put on a (Dick Van Dyke esque) English accent and the rest of the cast are cracking up.

He also can't pronounce Eton in a couple of scenes.

And my gift to you ladies here

assumetheposition · 17/03/2010 19:14

Also, I still can't get my head around Marlo (I think I fell asleep at the same point again).

Where does he come from? Does he just arrive and start taking corners or was he there from the start but the Barksdales wanted his corners when the towers came down?

PfftTheMagicDragon · 17/03/2010 19:23

Marlo appeared in season 3 - he took some corners from Barksdale (he's an up and coming dealer at the time, known for being ruthless and not giving a shit about his people) - then the Barksdale crew got into negotiations with him to trade their territory for Marlo's superior drugs. So he took the corners.
