Started off with him being v normal and her being portrayed as some kind of nervous wreck, then slowly changed to him being control freak. My moneys on him being closet gay etc etc. but then DH says I'm always thinking people are closet gays

Maxine Peake is brilliant.

The guy under the bridge: I thought the QC was buying drugs from him?

Report
CrankOfTheScrew · 05/10/2009 22:10

Oh yes bridge man. He did seem to enjoy bumsex!
Maybe a drug dealer or informant. Long-lost son? Whose dissapearance sent Mrs over the edge?
Wonder what was with the hack.

Sigh. Ishould be in bed.

Slow? Really? I found it absolutely gripping. So much detail and nuance. Maybe I lack excitement in my life

Was glued to last years

I ALMOST gave up. Totally unrealistic with the young girl being put in a cell straight away, female suspect alone in cell with male police officer. Don't these people watch Lynda La Plume De ma Tent?

Love whatserface tho, Sophie the solicitor woman

Man under bridge in credits as 'drug dealer'. And obv the photographer who snapped that exchange will be wheeled back in later in the week.

I was gripped by it - some fab actors in it. Couldn't come to terms with how creepy MacFadyen was as the QC though - gave me the chills. Love the actor playing the senior police detective but was I the only one completely repulsed by Sexton and his comment about marital rape not existing? Grim, grim character.

I think the 'annoying and implausible house' (all minimalist) is supposed to be a metaphor for cold and loveless marriage.

Yeah, the 'other man' is a doc, maybe psychiatrist?

Agree house absolutely and ludicrously annoying kitchen.

Also how many QCs realistically get home at 5.30pm and get to go to Sainsburys for custard? Although 13yr old watching with me (made polite conversation with him during the vaseline sex scene) pointed out was only going to sains for custard to check her story re going to supermarket.....Twas a bit trying altogether.

CybilLiberty · 05/10/2009 22:28

lol pumpkin, I agree. Bloody vaseline

Report
thepumpkineater · 05/10/2009 22:38

He did seem a bit obsessed with the vaseline. Had it out before going for run too. Do you think it is a metaphor for gay sex?

I agree DandyLioness - Completely gripping!

I too was completely gripped by it and will now have to watch the first 20 mins I missed on iPlayer before tonight's episode.

I found it particularly chilling when I realised the significance of the husband putting the headphones on his daughter. I mean talk about premeditated rape of his wife. Ugh.

Dramas such as these always have totally implausible houses imo.

The house reminded me of the house in 'Sleeping with the Enemy' - Might be implausible if he wasn't such a controlling and exacting character.... he'd want it to be immaculate. The daughter's bedroom was more 'normal'....

The acting was fab from Peake and MacFadyen...

Pumpkineater - many QCs get home at 5.30. Court finishes for the day at about 4.30. My DP is a criminal barrister and he is always under my feet . Watching a show like this with him can be annoying as he gets very excited about factual inaccuracies. Major one last night was that the Stephen Mackintosh character probably wouldn't have the chance to speak to a suspect alone like that - there'd be a female officer there.

Enjoying it though! But oh my - it's grim.

Nope. She isn't having an affair. That other bloke is a doctor I think. She is taking tablets for something - maybe depression - and her husband is supervising her drug regime ostensibly to make sure she stays stable. BUT.... if I found the right tablets on Wikipedia, they are as likely to cause psychological effects as cure them. So he is trying to keep her wobbly so he can control her better. Doctor has suggested she should stop taking them - that was what he wanted her to tell her husband on the phone. Husband was buying them illicitly from chappie under bridge.
