Is Dalek a smart little acronym?

had to wikipedia meme .

I am another one geekily pondering Face of Boe.

will study ds's scaled down model of Face of Boe (ie merchandise tut) to check for bowl extremities to put wrist transporter on. Didn't he just get pushed about by cat people?

Also wonder if we will see the in-between mutation from Jack to Face in future episodes.

BlackEyedDog · 11/08/2008 00:11

look at that

Face of Boe = Fob

??

Cappuccino · 11/08/2008 06:35

I once heard a fascinating Radio 4 programme about memes on the way back from a tedious work meeting

it was saying that the memes could actually be in control, so where we think we have been so clever creating the internet, in fact the memes used us as a way to spread themselves

ooo-eer

rewatching, there are a ton of little twiddly links - the Darkness is mentioned in The Unquiet Dead, and 'she should have turned left' is the punchline to a throwaway joke in Boom Town. But I really don't think there is anything in the first appearance of the Face of Boe to indicate RTD knew he was going to be a significant character. He doesn't really lay the first proper seeds of that storyline until New Earth.

Hi, btw. Dh is working from hom and I'm grabbing 30 minutes on his laptop.

JackieNo · 11/08/2008 13:56

Hello Kay. Any sign of you getting a new computer at all - we miss you.

KayHarker · 11/08/2008 14:11

Dh is umming and ahhing about using the money to buy a new fence (oh, the excitement!) or getting me a laptop and waiting a few more months for the fence.

The fence is not the obvious winner, imo, but Dh has pointed out that getting it done in the Summer months would be better than having the entire rotten edifice blow down in Autumn and cause our neighbours to pitchfork us to death.

I am threatening to pitchfork myself to death without internet access. It's a bit of an impasse. In other news.. Hamlet this week for me

UnquietDad · 11/08/2008 14:16

Supposedly Terry Nation came up with Dalek off the side of an encyclopaedia, but in later years it was said he made this up as no encyclopaedia in existence covers DAL to LEK. Nobody seemed to consider that it could have been the volume covering DAL to EKE, say... But I think he just got it "out of his head" as DD would say.

Cappuccino · 11/08/2008 14:27

KAY IS BACK HOORAH

look love sod the fence it will bring you no pleasure through the winter anyway

we have a lovely fence but it has pissed down all summer so no joy there either

well dh did point out that the F of B was shaking its/ his head when the Doctor let Cassandra explode, as if to say 'Oh dear, he is a bit genocidal atm isn't he, eh, like that mad half-human creation I remember all that time back'

OP posts:
Cappuccino · 11/08/2008 14:28

ooh interesting UnquietDad

Kay - hope you enjoy Hamlet. Must be hell not having internet access at home - if it goes down for any reason, I'm at a bit of a loss. Sad, I know, but true.

TheLadyofShalott · 11/08/2008 14:36

Terry Nation used to say that he got the name 'Dalek' from a volume of an encyclopedia labelled DAL - LEK, but he later said it wasn't true - and apparently there has never been an encylopedia published with that exact volume.

In the first Daleks story, the Daleks were described as muatated from the Thals enemies the Dals, but in Genesis of the Daleks this was changed to the Kaleds.

Cappuccino · 11/08/2008 14:37

all the more weight to my fridge letters theory

Sorry, x-post with UQD I'm at work & was interrupted mid-post & didn't check before I pressed Post.

These annoying people who actually expect you to do some work ....

RustyBear · 12/08/2008 13:04

The curse is lifted!

MIL has just left, after 9 days 16 hours and 5 minutes - and, yes, I was counting!

Now I can go back to my proper name & carry on watching my Torchwood s.2 DVDs

Cappuccino · 12/08/2008 14:52

why did you have to change your name for your mil?

it's not like you were called FuckCabbage

do please share your Torchwood insights

RustyBear · 12/08/2008 17:15

"The mirror crack'd from side to side;
"The curse is come upon me," cried
The Lady of Shalott."

It seemed appropriate....

Cappuccino · 14/08/2008 17:43

oh

is it over?

I'm still here .
I've just got a new pointer on my cursor which is a sonic screwdriver, and 'busy' is now a little Tardis. My screensaver is a time-tunnel. See, I'm keeping myself amused while it's horrid and rainy and blog doctor has got all depressing.

serenity · 15/08/2008 01:12

Still here , just waiting for something to post....

How about this (from Digital Spy)? Discuss:

"Russell T. Davies has revealed that Torchwood's third season will be entitled 'Children Of Earth'.

The mini-season, directed by Euros Lyn, will run over five consecutive nights on BBC One next spring.

Davies told Torchwood Magazine: "More than ever before, this series of Torchwood will be director-led, and it will look absolutely amazing."

Filming will begin in Cardiff on August 18 and details of casting are due to be released shortly. Freema Agyeman was expected to join the Torchwood team as Martha Jones, but her recent decision to star in ITV1's Law And Order has put her appearance in doubt."

Hmmm the 'Children of Earth' title makes it sound like it carries on where DW left off.

PortAndLemon · 15/08/2008 20:00

OT, but I thought this thread was the most likely to appreciate the exchange I've just overheard between DH and DS(3) in the bathroom...

DS: [clearly loking at Empire's feature on Watchmen] Who's that?

DH: That's Rorschach.

DS: Is he good or bad?

DH: Well, that's rather the question...

The conversation also ranged over the Comedian ("mostly bad" according to DH), Nite Owl (DS didn't think he looked enough like an owl) and Doctor Manhattan ("Does he wear pants like Tarzan?")

serenity · 16/08/2008 01:00

I am really looking forward to Watchmen, however I'm very frustrated atm. We have owned the graphic novel for forever, it's awlways popping up when I'm looking for something else, but I've never actually got around to reading it. Now I want to read the damn thing, it's disappeared

Is the Comedian bad? But it's Jeffrey Dean Morgan, he can't be bad!

PortAndLemon · 16/08/2008 10:38

No one's entirely good or entirely bad. But he's not very nice, certainly.

Cappuccino · 16/08/2008 12:31

what is watchmen? I am out of my league now

OP posts:
Cappuccino · 16/08/2008 21:41

well my my my

I am watching the third episode of the 1st (Eccleston) series and The Darkness is mentioned

oh yes

it is that Dickensian one, and the one with Eve Myles in, with the Gelth - the Unquiet Dead

and Gwyneth says to Rose, when she is having a bit of a medium moment: "all the things you've seen, The Darkness, the Big Bad Wolf" [oooh]

I wonder if RTD had a grand plan or if he just goes back through old scripts thinking "If we use that we will look as though we knew what we were doing"

I wasn't overkeen on The Unquiet Dead. I think I'm not so keen on the history ones. But then, in real life, history strikes me as one of the most boring things ever. If dh tries to watch Time Team it is seen as him goading me towards divorce
