they are different Dior

I think CE's Doctor is darker and shoutier, but it needed something heavyweight to get adults to sit up and listen

and fgs, he has teeth. He has to emote so that we can see them properly

Catching up with series 1 as well.

CE seems like an altogether human sort of doc. A bit out of control. Didn't notice the ears but boy, that's one helluva nose.

Was when he let the vault close leaving Rose stranded with the mentalist dalek. DT would NEVER do that.

RustyBear · 17/08/2008 11:04

Are you sure DT would never do that? What about him going to rescue Madame de Pompadour, knowing he couldn't get back, leaving Rose & Mickey stranded on the spaceship?

Cappuccino · 18/08/2008 09:55

yes, and anyway, I get a bit irritated with the fact that he is always going to rescue the companion. There was a bit in the Unquiet Dead where he actually, really, was going to die, and that was a bit good, actually

because if it's like a romcom, and he always gets her out in the nick of time and they fall into each other's arms, then it's a bit [meh] from a girl's perspective, isn't it?

it's like Hart to Hart, where the wife was meant to be "able to take care of herself", yet it always ended up with her screaming "Jonathan!" falling down a mineshaft, and thingywatsit, god what's the actor's name now, you know, rescuing her

Robert Wagner?

Cappuccino · 18/08/2008 10:23

ROBERT WAGNER

thank you

WELL, the thing about DT and Mme de Pompadour was my next question! Why build a 'love ' story with Rose when he was fully prepared to dump her on a broken spaceship while he got soppy faced with this french bird?

Back to the vault: he pressed the arseing button to close the vault, leaving his 'love' Rose to Extermination, whereas DT, I'm sure, would have darted downstairs and distracted the mad dalek with fab sonic feedback, surely.

Agree with the saving companions is meh. Martha got good only when she wasn't drippily simpering over the Doctor and got on with SAVING US ALL ON PLANET EARTH.

Cappuccino · 20/08/2008 09:14

oh absolutely re Pompadour

also, when they were stuck on that black hole spaceship thingy, it was by no means certain that they would stay together. In fact, when Rose suggested it, he looked positively horrified noncommittal

I do fear that we were given what we wanted with the Rose/ Doctor romance conclusion, rather than necessarily what had been going on

Rose/Ten

I have nothing against a bit of 'love against the odds' - worked very well for Mulder and Sculley - but there's a line it shouldn't cross, and they bloody crossed it with Rose/Ten. The Show should be glances, and occasional touches, lines that can be reinterpreted but nothing concrete, all the sex and relationship stuff shouldn't exist outside the grubby boundaries of fan fiction (that way I can ignore the domestic stuff )

Cappuccino · 22/08/2008 14:25

(btw serenity am v excited - our first Supernatural DVD arrived today. If only dh's parents weren't coming, and we could just WATCH IT)

pah - Mme de Pompadour just illustrated his impulsiveness. And he didn't leave them stranded, he was going to take the 'slow path' back to Rose. That fact that he has great affection and emotion about others is part and parcel of him being 'The Doctor'. Doesn't bother me in the least.

And actually, if you look at GitFP in the context of the series arc, it's very much an episode length illustration of what Rose has just learned in School Reunion - that the Doctor has these relationships which are so fleeting from his perspective.

Which is precisely why her ending up with Human!Doctor was the very best ending for both of them, because she would get the romantic relationship she clearly always wanted but he held back from (but I think it's clear even in series 1 that he felt) - and he wouldn't have to watch her fade away and die in front of him.

I'm all for a canon pairing actually reaching fulfilment if it's the end of the story arc for that character. You're just a Whedonite, serenity, wedded to bittersweet agony

Right, anyway. Hello!!!! I'm back for a bit, I've managed a paperclips and string job with the old machine so we'll see how long she holds out.

And yes, Hamlet was abso-frigging-bloody marvellous. Really, really funny, and even some cheeky flesh on display (yes, of course I was looking, why do you ask?)

KayHarker · 22/08/2008 15:35

Capp, thankee for the mail, I'll try and get back to you soonish, the crap is a bit kneee-deep here at the moment (thankyou lord, for computer access at last!)

Cappuccino · 22/08/2008 15:49

ooh hello

wtf is gitfd?

'ow bist?

KayHarker · 22/08/2008 16:01

oo, out of practice with the formatting. You can tell I've been actually talking to people rather than using different font tricks to communicate!

KayHarker · 22/08/2008 16:02

Actually, that's a lie, i've not actually talked to anyone for ages.

Cappuccino · 22/08/2008 16:11

I have to report that I too am "a Whedonite, wedded to bittersweet agony"

serenity I got yon Buffy soundtrack out the library and Wild Horses still makes me want to bawl

OP posts:
KayHarker · 22/08/2008 16:30

I don't doubt it, Capp. Got far too much bittersweet in RL, I don't object to a quasi-happy ending or two on telly, me. Besides, surely Donna covers the bases for Whedonesque tra-ge-dee?

serenity · 22/08/2008 17:15

I can't find my Buffy soundtrack I want to listen to it.

I'm quite happy to be called a Whedonite, thank you, and absolutely, bittersweet agony is the way to go (give me angst ) Perversely enough I felt the need for more angst and love against the odds, so I've started rewatching Buffy from the beginning.

Wild Horses is excellent (I loved the Sundays) I always had a soft spot for Virgin State of Mind as well - Vamp!Willow is just it (one of Dh's favourites too )

I'll be interested to know what you think Of Supernatural, Capp. I am pretty obsessive over it, so it's nice to get a feel of how more neutral parties see it

JackieNo · 22/08/2008 17:23

Yay - welcome back (if temporarily) Kay. It's been pretty quiet without you. So just how much flesh in Hamlet, eh, eh?

RustyBear · 22/08/2008 17:40

"Take the slow path back to Rose"? How exactly? Wouldn't she be kind of dead by the time he got there?

I just think the whole thing could have been avoided by a slight change of dialogue - instead of Mickey saying 'We can't fly the Tardis without him', why not something like 'The Doctor said the Tardis would take us home' & Rose saying, 'No I'm not going without him. Same result, and fits in with the bit at the end where he says 'Always wait five and a half hours'

Have to say I'm with you on the Whedonesque tragedy bit though, despite being a Buffy fan -wouldn't have hurt them to have a hapy ending once in a while.

DD on the other hand is a full-on 'billowy coat of pain' addict - brought up on classic Dr Who, she hates the romantic bits and happy endings.
