I'd rank the Christmas specials

1 (by a long way) The Christmas Invasion

2 The Next Doctor

3 The Runaway Bride

3 (by a long way) Whatever the Kylie one was called (see how memorable it was - in fact I haven't even bothered to watch it again now I have the series 4 set))

KayHarkerNeedsToSleep · 17/01/2009 23:27

yes, the first one is absolutely mint. Nothing is ever going to beat 'Did you miss me?' My three year is always running around with long things shouting 'For the planet!'

I think I'd rank them the same as you now. Although I do hate the Runaway bride quite a bit, largely because of the monster being so utterly rubbish.

But yes, it's much better than all the slow-mo falling stuff in 'Voyage of the Damned.' (hereafter termed 'That Damned Voyage')

RustyBear · 17/01/2009 23:30

Oddly, I like the Runaway Bride better now because of what happened (or eventually didn't happen) in Turn Left - it makes it seem more part of the whole thing rather than just an aberration.

KayHarkerNeedsToSleep · 17/01/2009 23:44

Yes, now it fits into the bigger picture, it works well.

Mind you, even That Damned Voyage might fit in the bigger picture when you consider the Mr Copper foundation that Hilary Jones worked with... at one point

RustyBear · 17/01/2009 23:48

Mmmmm - maybe....

Maybe I'll have to watch it again & see if it's better than I remember

KayHarkerNeedsToSleep · 17/01/2009 23:53

Oh, it's not. And I still say turning Kylie into stardust is just such a gay fanboy thing to do...

RustyBear · 18/01/2009 00:19

RTD put that bit in later didn't he because Astrid's death 'wasn't sad enough'

Now it's just 'sad' in the teenspeak meaning of the word....

PortAndLemon · 03/02/2009 19:45

Interestingly, rewatching Series 2 and 3 (and just starting 4) with DS has made me realise that all of RTD's trademark over-sappy stuff is in facr perfectly pitched at the emotional level of a four-year-old.

(Hilary Jones worked with the Mr Copper Foundation?)

KayHarker · 03/02/2009 21:08

ROFL, you know, when I wrote it, I thought it didn't look right...

Saw Moses Jones last night, partly because Matt Smith was in it, and I'd only got excited about Paterson Joseph after seeing him survivors, didn't like him at all before then.

But, erm. Nope, still not working for me. he was just... wallpaper. I spent quite a lot of time thinking that Shaun Parkes would have been good, and hoping that his Doctor Who character would make a return.

Which then reminded me that I'd like to see Ida as a companion. By which time I'd completely forgotten Matt Smith even existed, and then I noticed him on the screen, remembered he was going to be eleven and started crying.

(Moses Jones was quite good, though. "I'm from Shepherds Bush" snort)

KayHarker · 03/02/2009 21:09

Seeing him in Survivors.

ladycornyofsilke · 03/02/2009 21:12

I haven't seen the Kylie one all the way through. I fell asleep on christmas day while watching it and can't bring myself to watch it again. Kylie's fall is crap. Look scared why don't ya!

NoBiggy · 03/02/2009 21:13

Matt Smith is going to be eleven?

Shall we send him a birthday card?

madamekoto · 04/02/2009 20:03

Have not read entire thread, so dont know if this has been mentioned before. Anyway if you get the chance have a look at A Teaspoon and an open mind. Its a site for Doctor Who fan fic. I would post a link but do not know how.

And also Calufrax which recs the fan fic and suggests the best. Some really amazing stuff on there.

PS at NoBiggy.

PortAndLemon · 04/02/2009 20:09

KayHarker writes (or did write) a lot on A Teaspoon and an Open Mind. Some of hers is very smutty good...

oggsdog · 13/02/2009 09:28

Kay's stuff is indeed very smutty good .

I'm still having problems with Doctor Frou Frou Matt Smith

Trouvere · 13/02/2009 15:52

You want fan fic? Here's some fan fic!

KayHarker · 16/02/2009 19:22

I still write it, I just don't publish as much because it's not actually that good

Just watching Fear Her on Three. It's such a crap episode in many ways, but I love the Doctor and Rose in it, lots of flirty sparring. Really underlines why they had to be separated, though, because any longer and my smutty fanfic would have been played out on screen.

oggsdog · 17/02/2009 20:40

I watched that on dvd last week.

I love it when she lets the string thing out of the garage and he runs to her and hugs her.

oggsdog · 19/02/2009 12:24

New companion for second special.

UnquietDad · 23/02/2009 17:54

This is excellent.

Everything you need to know about Doctor Who's audience, the BBC's current attitude to it, and the programme's prospects for the future. All clearly set out, with a dash of humour.

ellceeell · 23/02/2009 21:29

That's really interesting - thanks UnquietDad

UnquietDad · 23/02/2009 22:37

Plus Keith is a fellow author and I thought I'd plug his blog!

NoBiggy · 23/02/2009 23:43

UD, I unearthed something from your past under my kitchen table last weekend.

It was a fanzine from 198?. I put it back under the table.

UnquietDad · 24/02/2009 00:20

heh-heh. Time Scanner?... Or Skaro?...

NoBiggy · 24/02/2009 13:41

Time Scanner. I was going to bundle a load up and see if anyone bites on Ebay.

It's just a case of getting motivated.

(So it probably won't happen )
