I’m not sure I’ve seen PQ without a beard , not in recent years anyway .

I had a real soft spot for him when he was clean shaven and played Eugene in Cutting It years ago. Love a Scouse accent.
Edit: have just googled and actually he had a beard then 😆, just not as bushy.

He's got such a big beard and hair covering much of his face, but he still manages to show the facial expressions well, especially his eyes. (He was reminding me of Gromit 😂, with the raised eyebrows and looking away in dismay).

the80sweregreat · 14/02/2026 14:13

Definitely Gromit vibes ! Good comparison, someone who doesn’t need words.

the80sweregreat · 14/02/2026 14:27

I love how Micheal Sleep isn’t at all scared of management, but in real life he would have been fired by now.

I think it’s poignant. I get the impression she wasn’t very happy/mentally well, and he was trying to recreate a happier time for her.

I’m wondering if this was the last time she believed in magic… something like that because it was a childhood Christmas and the happiest one of her life.

I love the way the characters are so finely nuanced. MC must spend a lot of time observing people. His character in the DIY shop is so realistic.

I love the understated acting in this as well. It doesn't feel like any of the actors in this are "acting".

Yes! Often you notice the acting but in this you really don’t. I really enjoyed ep1 and am desperate for ep2 but am controlling myself 😇
I love the diy shop scenes 🤣 ‘have you had your break?’ 😂

GrillaMilla · 14/02/2026 19:36

I liked the way he tried to slam the door but it was on a slow closer 😂

custardlover · 14/02/2026 21:09

I am absolutely loving it.

the80sweregreat · 14/02/2026 22:15

It is very good isn’t it! Makes a change to actually enjoy a programme.

GrillaMilla · 14/02/2026 22:41

Just hope it doesn't have a silly ending after investing so much time in it!

IAmKerplunk · 14/02/2026 22:46

It’s made me rewatch The Detectorists this evening

crunchypeanutbutterontoast · 14/02/2026 23:04

Just seen ep1 and really enjoyed the gentle humour and quirkiness. Loved Michael Palin. Looking forward to the next one!

A bit like my strategy with chocolate, I limit myself so I still have some. I get sad at the thought of none left....

moto748e · 14/02/2026 23:27

'Appointment TV' is a rare pleasure. It's nearly died out since the days of Line Of Duty etc.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/02/2026 23:28

We have restraint 😛😛😛😛

and nice to have something to look forward to and enjoy @FindleBindle

Yes there was something I found very funny but I can't quite remember if it was in 1 or 2, so I'm holding fire on it until after Monday as I'm scared of Blondes!

You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.

I really enjoyed it. It felt quite cosy, whimsical and something a bit different. It's led me on to the detectorists which I am enjoying now. I love that Mackenzie Crook used his pirates of the Caribbean money to start his own production company
