It’s runaway on Netflix. I can’t find a thread! It’s really good!!

They should be on channel 5 or that BBC 1 afternoon slot where doctors used to be 😁 but they're ok if you want a good American style show with great houses made for British audiences 👍.

the80sweregreat · 06/01/2026 16:06

The trouble with an afternoon slot is the violence.
I know that people can access Netflix underage ( I assume they can get around it, but don’t know ) but with it being on
bbc it would need to be after 9pm.

the80sweregreat · 06/01/2026 16:08

Dh laughed at Ruth jones and her chat with her colleague at a shoot out. She looked very unfit for such a job and it was meant to have been years ago too.
Might have been better to have had a look alike do that part , even if it might have been a bit confusing as to who she was.

WingBingo · 06/01/2026 16:33

So so daft but I keep watching as I want to know what happened. As for the subplots, pointless filler.

10k for a dna test? They are on Amazon, ffs.

I know, I know, I was referring more to the calibre of show that fills these time slots 🤭. I will still binge watch the hell out of it, starting tonight in fact.

I take it all back , this one's really good 😳.

Just finished the series... Enjoyable silliness in suspended reality.

However, has anyone else noticed the similarities between this show and the running grave book by Robert Galbraith (aka jk Rowling)? I believe the Harlan coben book, which this is based on came first but had anyone read it and did it contain things like the box and iirc two main sons? Sounds tenuous I know but I got the impression the screenwriters had read the running grave and used that to set the cult farm scenes. Or maybe jk just ripped off Harlan? Are both books based on the same real life cult??

No this is nothing like The Running Grave, except that both have a cult in the plot.

I'm finding the Harlen Cobens are getting worse quality wise. I think they hit paydirt with a great formula and now they're just being churned out. That said, I'm totally glued so they must be getting it right!

This one has too many sub plots and could be 6 episodes instead of 8.

Has anyone else noticed that they ALL start with a happy family getting ready for school and work? It's all "Darling where is your lunch box? And Mum, where's all my school things? Meanwhile the Dad with the Important Job can't find his car keys. The Mum and Dad kiss each other to prove what a respectable non- cheating couple they are, and then something mysterious happens. Roll opening credits and slowed down breathy pop song!

Binged this last night! I too, had to forego reality. JN hardly ate or slept, just like Elena. I want to know, if Ingrid knew Paige was in rehab, why on earth did she suggest going covert and investigating her flat. Surely she must have known it was a drug den - she had killed Aaron not too long ago. She was very chill and relaxed for a murderer, especially a finger chopping one. No panic or fear when the weird cop couple were around. Lots of loose ends, like what happened to Henry. And was Cornelius in on the murder, as he chucked the knife into the river. Why did Luther want to kill or hurt Ingrid in the den, Luther didn't even like Aaron.

Countsounds · 07/01/2026 09:27

Am I overthinking? I thought that the ending that James Nesbitt character was presented with - that his wife killed Aaron wasnt really the ending. That look on his face at the table at the end. The suspicious doctor following his wife that night realised what she was going to do. She got there and couldn’t do it and he killed aaron. They left separately (the wife being seen by the dealer who shot her. James Nesbitt character accepts Paige’s version, as she believes it and its better than knowing your mum’s had an affair with someone so close he’d kill for you.

It’s all these unnecessary sub plots that annoy me as they aren’t relevant. Elenas husbands secret child, why did Dee Dee go on about Ash having a problem in his childhood that was never divulged . One minute the daughters in a wheelchair and then she’s standing and walking . The detective ignoring a murder because the ‘ guy ‘ helps people in the community and don’t get me started on the ridiculous religion / cult thing . It’s always a cult , bad boarding school or evil children’s home behind most of these dramas these days .

Omg I came here to ask the same- why was the daughter up and walking in one episode and in a wheelchair for the rest?

What happened to Henry? He was a key part of the story and he was just forgotten?

The side story with the professor and Katie- why ?

if the mum knew the Daughter was safe in rehab why did she go and visit a violent drug dealer and why did she let her husband tera himself apart looking for her?

Its inconceivable that any normal person could carry out the sort of murder Minnie driver did.

Its bizarre that these dramas are being commissioned and most likely handsomely paid for.

columnatedruinsdomino · 07/01/2026 10:42

I watched the first episode and then the last. I enjoy the books and I’m usually disappointed with the TV versions because they don’t bear any relation to the books! I liked the first adaptations from Eastern Europe but the last few I haven’t enjoyed at all.

tattime · 07/01/2026 10:46

For the ‘why is she in a wheelchair’ crowd…

This is quite normal for certain conditions. Ambulant but need mobility aid for long distance/ task/time of day.

I think the actor is disabled - not the character. Think of it like wearing glasses. Sometimes necessary but not always. Nothing to do with the storyline either way.

Agree that it didn't seem over. In that final scene, staring directly at his wife, he had a look of suspicion and confusion on his face and maybe even contempt.

One minute the daughters in a wheelchair and then she’s standing and walking

The more this is seen on TV the better, as far as I'm concerned. I have the same condition as the actress and am also an ambulatory wheelchair user, and I regularly get dirty looks when I get out of the chair to walk. Not all wheelchair users have lost the use of their legs

Absolutely get this but in order to raise awareness it would’ve been far better to properly explain it. Understanding and awareness is surely created by dialogue?

Lots of actors with disabilities have voiced that they want to take on roles that are in no way related to their disability and they don’t want their disability to necessarily form part of the dialogue or plot. Adults should be able to grasp (or Google!) that some people who use a wheelchair can also walk without an explanation being shoe-horned in

I thought it dragged on too long, and a bit unbelievable with the cult, which I did think would have worked better in Utah or somewhere. The police didn’t seem to solve very much!
Did like the ending though.

This the problem with all the adaptations that are set outside of the original material, most are new york/ new jersey , it becomes less believable even more so when you've read the books they are based on .

Surely he’s looking like that because him and his daughter have realised that the mum has killed her son, without knowing that he was her son. The point is they feel they can’t tell her that, and have to keep that devastating secret for the rest of their lives.

CrowsInMyGarden · 07/01/2026 18:35

Unrealistic but I still enjoyed it

Doingtheboxerbeat · 07/01/2026 20:31

Was Harlan Coben raised in a cult 😳 because they always end up featuring one and it would explain why the stories are so completely batshit otherworldly and not based remotely in reality 🤔.

MissBattleaxe · 07/01/2026 23:35

Way too many pointless red herrings. I also found the murder of Ruth Jones' character very upsetting, even though the storyline about her being an armed police officer was a stretch!

Musicaltheatremum · 08/01/2026 09:10

I ve done 3 episodes. Trying not to get confused with the sub plots that don't always fit in.
I recognised the actor playing Paul. He's the son of one of my brother's friends so that was a bit of excitement especially the way he smashed the guitar!!

Yes, you are right she has a condition called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, she was in Hollyoaks and is an ambulatory wheelchair user.

DH and I quite enjoyed this one, we’ve given up on the previous ones. DH reads the books, I kept saying to him I don’t know how you keep up with all the back and forth in time.

mydogisthebest · 06/01/2026 15:02

Ruth Jones' character would never had been in special forces. As another poster said, she was waddling around with that gun and looked ridiculous. Pretty sure you have to be fit to be in special forces

Exactly, firearms officers have to maintain a fairly high level of fitness through their service, unlike regular officers, They have fitness assessments every year that they have to pass, I don’t think her casting as an ex S.O. Officer was very realistic.

Anxietyspiral · 09/01/2026 19:13

I'm 3 episodes in and losing the will to live. Who the hell is everybody? Why are the scenes so short? Why are they all so smug? Why is the music so loud? Wtf is going on?

Minnie Driver and Tracey-Ann Oberman both look incredible though I must say.
