It’s runaway on Netflix. I can’t find a thread! It’s really good!!

The black actor playing the detective is very bad at acting! Or is he brilliantly acting a really awkward inauthentic character?

Me too! 🤣

Ooo yes please! I watched the one that had him in it - The Stranger, and then also Safe, with the chap from Dexter. But this one has James Nesbitt, and I looooove his accent, so I can MAYBE watch it even Armitage-less.

SPOILER

I didn’t understand the storyline with Elena, her late husband and his secret daughter. The daughter looked too old to be his daughter unless he was a teenager when she was born. Was she supposed to have been conceived when he was married to Elena? So he went behind his wife’s back to be a donor for an acquaintance? I found this the most unrealistic part of it all tbh.

No it all happened before he met Elena and he was basically a sperm donor to a friend. They looked to be in their 50’s (Ruth Jones is 59) and the daughter in her early 30s so perfectly possible to be the father.

SPOILERS

I didn’t think that was the most unbelievable thing to be honest. The thing I couldn’t get my head round was how little JN knew about his wife’s past? Seemed really unbelievable that she never told him she’d managed to escape a cult? I’d accept she may have said not said she’d been pregnant (but then kept the photo of her pregnant?) but the rest was just bizarre?

Also the fact that she managed to commit a brutal bloody murder including mutilation, was able to pick up the kebabs, dispose of all her bloody clothing and saunter back into the hospital all within an hour just pushes belief to the extreme.

Also the daughter in the wheelchair is a disabled actress who is a wheelchair user but can stand and walk too. Her disability wasn’t part of the story line so didn’t need explaining.

JN always plays the same characters in these things..
Love Elena’s mum , she is a good actress..
( was in Eastenders once)

Annette Badland was also in benny hill shows years ago .

the80sweregreat · 03/01/2026 10:40

Annette Badland is good!
Dee Dee is annoying me, those two remind me of the couple in ‘ killing Eve’ who go around killing people.
They were equally odd too.

RedRiverShore6 · 03/01/2026 13:57

The couple annoyed me too, there was another series on Netflix with a couple killing people, I can't remember what it was but it was quite popular and it also reminded me of them, and also the Killing Eve ones.

the80sweregreat · 03/01/2026 14:07

Dee Dee reminds me of the late Karen carpenter. I keep expecting her to break into song. It’s her smug persona I can’t abide.

Livingthebestlife · 03/01/2026 14:30

I am a huge fan of Harlan Coben and usually always have to Google at the end as I find some loose ends.

What happened to Henry? I get he was the 'runaway' but did they actually say he was dead ?

The plots are very samey, I think many like that and they know there'll be a big twist in the end.

The young couple actually irritated me, especially her for some reason, she never stopped talking, they were a carbon copy of Barbie and Ken in 'Stay close'.

I see his cast (compared to very early series) is attracting more and more big celebrities, Ruth was brilliant. Unfortunately the 2 coppers and the young couple weren't the most interesting or convincing considering how much screen time they got.

It was still good, I always have to binge Harlan Coben as it holds my interest and I can never wait to see the next episode.

RedRiverShore6 · 03/01/2026 14:46

I think it was The Night Agent that had a weird couple in it, similar couples seem the keep popping up in lots of series.

Mistletoeiggi · 03/01/2026 15:20

I've just finished it, I didn't guess all the twists and enjoyed it despite JN being his usual slightly smug self! His wife was beautiful, haven't seen her in anything for ages

I must admit I usually avidly anything with JN in because he’s so bloody irritatingly smug!

the80sweregreat · 03/01/2026 17:31

Dh doesn’t like JN either , I think he tends to be a marmite type of actor. I don’t mind him, but all the same people being in similar dramas means it’s easy to get confused and there are a lot of cop dramas on at the moment too !

Shadesofscarlett · 03/01/2026 18:00

when they went to the drug dealer where Ingrid got shot, and the young lad with the bong corrected his grammar to whom - that young lad looked just like the brother. so confused. and i did not understand the selling her guitar thing too. the brother seemed a lot more sinister than they told us.

the80sweregreat · 03/01/2026 18:15

Why did Sam ( who is a strange one) sell that guitar? His dad is loaded and it was awful seeing it being smashed up like that.

it really was. and the guys in the bar filmed it so it would have been online. why did nobody recognise her brother/guitar from the live stream or youtube like they did the dad beating matey up in the park? so confusing.

TheChosenTwo · 03/01/2026 19:21

Just starting this, about 10 minutes in and I’m intrigued! Didn’t know there was a new HC out, I enjoyed the stranger the most but have watched the rest and found them watchable and none of them realistic but I don’t mind that, I’m not watching a documentary so am usually okay suspending disbelief.
Was looking to see if there was a thread and here you all are! I’m not fussed about spoilers, actually quite the opposite as I often miss things when watching so it’s nice to have a little bit of background knowledge.
Kind of thought I should wait to watch with dd1 because she likes these too but I’ve started now so… 😂

the80sweregreat · 03/01/2026 19:36

Ruth jones is very good as the PI.
I don’t like her 70s blouse, but it suits the character
The lady cop is annoying me and Dee Dee.

I have just finished and have many questions but note that the previous poster has just started so I’ll refrain for now.

Honestly don’t mind me! If I were bothered about spoilers I’d have not gone looking for the thread 😀

Abracadeebra · 03/01/2026 20:24

Did anyone else’s jaw drop when it turned out who the love interest of the Isaac was? Completely implausible and laughable!

TheChosenTwo · 03/01/2026 20:38

I agree the detective is pretty dreadfully cast, I’ve not been questioned or interviewed by a real detective myself but other tv depictions don’t portray them as being so hammy and goady. It’s pretty cringe.

Really? I thought it was refreshing that he wasn’t paired with the stereo typically attractive (read thin) woman? She even makes a joke about him looking at a blonde and he says he’s only interested in the red head (ie her). She was attractive, had a great personality and was intelligent. Whilst he was conventionally attractive he was a bit uptight and quite abrasive at times. I didn’t think it implausible at all.

cestlavielife · 03/01/2026 20:47

Some holes at the end but good twists

One minute the daughters in a wheelchair and then she’s standing and walkin

The actress has EDS she uses wheelchair as needed. Ambulatory wheelchair user.

I came on to ask this. When did he get the guitar from Paige? Also did I miss what happened to Henry? I did enjoy it though, some of it was filmed locally so it is good spotting familiar landmarks.
