Riot Women binge thread for those using BBC iPlayer

As all episodes are available on iPlayer thought I would start a binge thread for any like me who find it easier to follow a story line when there isn't a gap of 7 days.

Riot Women

No apologies - just noise. Five fierce women crank up the volume to get their voices heard. Sally Wainwright's riotous drama with Joanna Scanlan, Tamsin Greig and Rosalie Craig.

I thought that too. Beth should have made sure kitty was out that day. She did offer to go out , but Beth said no. For an intelligent teacher she want thinking straight

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2025 15:42
  • wasn’t thinking straight.

On episode 5

I know kitty has survived hell but shes so irritating and tiresome

Next series she should be a background character

The sister of Tamsin grieg seems interesting and we dont know much about her

Its alright, not that good, but i love love joanna scanlon in anything 🙌🥰

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2025 17:15

Kitty is irritating, but I like her. She doesn’t say the things that people expect her to say. She is unapologetic at times and that rattles people!

Wimwopadoo · 15/10/2025 12:02

I thought the Nisha storyline was good precisely because it was so depraved and unthinkable and a few years ago may have seemed far fetched , but then we obviously remember Nicole Smallman and Bibaa Henry who were indeed photographed by male police officers after they had been murdered in 2020. Police who were supposed to be protecting the scene. One of the officers has sent a photograph to a friend that said “Unfortunately I’m sat next to two dead birds full of stab wounds.” Horrific. And then was the Sarah Everard case of course. So depraved yes. But also frighteningly what was portrayed here was not even quite as horrific as what has actually happened in real life in the real uk by the real police in recent years .

I thought him grabbing her boobs was a bit far fetched, at work, in 2025 tbh

But he is so evil and definitely reflects the state of the cops

My first thought of kitty was that she looks super like the woman who was the face of the Sarah everard protests, with her red hair and black clothes

I loved her hitting the sons father in law!

People who've survived trauma quite often are irritating and tiresome though. And also chaotic and self destructive. She was OTT but so was a lot of the writing.

I completely agree, and I get that she is in a very chaotic place in her own life dealing with her son and trauma as to how he was conceived

I dunno, maybe its how she was written, just a bit irritating to watch her constant benders and meltdowns

That said, there are far greater irritants

I thought maybe Kitty’s dad was lying about the names. So that he gets revenge on whoever he wants (maybe the policeman who got him put away) without having to get his hands dirty. As he’s such a big gangster why wouldn’t he want revenge for his daughter and get his own connections to sort out the 3 men.

My memory of the story of Kitty's pregnancy that on one level she had no one, only her criminal day and 2 much older brothers. Her mother having "disappeard" and that she was made to feel it was her fault that she was "complicit". Not at all unusual for men to blame the woman, or even a 12 year old girl. This was / is part of her anger.

It only through meeting the women in the band that anyone has told her she is not at fault.

But interesting that now her dad, is willing to identify the men. I am sure he hasn't been converted to thinking an underage girl is never complicit, but does have other reasons for helping her now.

Nobody believed her about the dad :(
I found that realistic as he is the posh middle class one and she isn’t

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2025 18:21

I bet her mum run off with the under cover cop !

Seriously? A man who raped her 12 year old daughter? Shock

I loved it too. Especially laughed at Jack the Rimmer and was convinced he was chosen for his resemblance to Chris Martin who after going to see Coldplay, my middle-aged friends and I have discussed in great detail iykwim

Iwanttoliveinagardencentre · 17/10/2025 22:51

I thought the BBC would shoehorn in a “trans” role and of course they did.
An utterly pointless character who added zero to the plot.
I was infuriated to see a man in a dress on stage in a band called Riot WOMEN and to see him singing about seeing red in menopause.
FFS.
We can’t even have fucking blood coming out of our fannies without a bloke wanting to appropriate it for his own purposes and the BBC tries to normalise this absurdity and we are all supposed to pretend this blatantly obvious he is a she.
Buggered up what was otherwise a great programme.

PauliesWalnuts · 17/10/2025 23:11

I loved it. I live about 15 miles from Calderdale and it’s very representative of Hebden Bridge, so even though I’m a fully signed up TERF, it’s basically what you’d see out and about in the town.

the80sweregreat · 18/10/2025 02:41

Kitty’s mum may not have known she was raped by this undercover cop and her dad is probably lying or planting a seed in order for her to find him. That was my only reasoning .although Kitty said her mum disappeared, so she may even be dead.

Yes Hebden Bridge is like that.

Kitty’s Mum was long gone at this point. I actually struggle to get my head round the idea that 3 men, who were working for the head of top OCG who ran Bradford, having the guts to repeatedly rape his 12 yr old daughter. And get away with it. Even after Kitty falls pregnant and has the baby.

Mags1993 · 18/10/2025 10:43

Im watching it currently and have been really troubled by the scene with Nish the police officer. I can't stop thinking about it. Just horrific.

I have been so troubled by that scene since I watched it. It made me sick to my stomach. I also thought about the 2020 case you referred to. Just simply awful how low those in a position of trust can stoop

the80sweregreat · 18/10/2025 10:49

Kitty told Beth that her mum left when she was 9 and dad shipped her off to a private school because he didn’t like her around.
My musing was that the undercop wasn’t one of the abusers and dad only wants him found for other reasons to do with him being put inside or maybe he had an affair with her mum prior to Kitty being abused.

All only guesses though, I’m sure it’ll be my much more complicated than any of this , but if Tom’s biological dad is the one who is dead , it’ll be wrapped up quickly if they can find any kind of DNA from him or something like that ( from any historical police records )

Much as I love Sally, her plots are often that easy to predict.

Just finished it - there has to be a second series! please!

PauliesWalnuts · 18/10/2025 14:04

This is the second time that I’ve seen Peter Davison play a horrible, creepy, husband (see also “Life” with Alison Steadman”) and he does it very well. He made me shiver in this.

Rollergirl11 · 18/10/2025 15:26

Did anyone else think Peter Davison was going to turn out to be Kitty’s Dad?! 😂
When we saw Kitty read the article on her phone about her Dad being extradited and going to prison I thought he looked like him in the picture. Then at the talent show Peter Davison kept asking where Kitty was like he really wanted to see her and I had in my head that she was going to see him in the crowd while they were performing and go mental. I knew that it was utterly preposterous but that’s where my head went!
