Riot Women binge thread for those using BBC iPlayer

As all episodes are available on iPlayer thought I would start a binge thread for any like me who find it easier to follow a story line when there isn't a gap of 7 days.

Riot Women

No apologies - just noise. Five fierce women crank up the volume to get their voices heard. Sally Wainwright's riotous drama with Joanna Scanlan, Tamsin Greig and Rosalie Craig.

Jess’s daughter is called Chloe I think.

I had more beef with the fact there were two young women who took the piss out of the whole thing in the band, albeit backing singers, than I did with Miranda being there.

It obviously doesn't matter that the backing singers aren't menopausal, so they could be anyone really.

I would have preferred a band member to have been Asian instead of the young women who felt totally out of place. I'd loved it to be have been Mina Anwar. And what happened to one of the young women (Nisha) was a layer or two of depravity I could have done without.

For me it’s the suggestion that if transwomen want to enter womens spaces, we are all expected to accept it without question so long as they’re on their best behaviour? And refer to them as her and go along with the idea that it would be discriminatory to behave otherwise. I wouldn’t accept a transwoman in my menopause rock band any more than I would accept one in my gynaecology ward, in my domestic violence support group or strip searching me in my police force? I don’t mind if the transwoman is the nicest kindest person because for me they are a member of a movement that perpetuates a dangerous ideology and me saying not my Nigel about my trans ally friend is to dismiss the genuine fears of every woman who has been raped or attacked by men and is expected to welcome them into their safe spaces? Disappointing.

I see your point, I wouldn’t in my menopausal rock band either. But in terms of plausible behaviour for these characters, if you live in Hebden Bridge and your Ds (who is frankly a heck of a lot less annoying than your dd) was trans it’s not much of a stretch that you might feel differently.

That's a good point.

And yes it was. I put that down to Wainwright wanting to explore more ways women in general are victims of misogyny. The male officer seems to epitomise everything The Met for one currently stand for.

I know Wainwright's said in the past she didn't (at one time) believe the level of corruption in the police as shown by the likes of Line of Duty, but has since realised otherwise, so maybe she wants to show more of that, especially the sexual exploitation side.

If there's a second series, that'll come up again with Kitty's storyline.

A mystery about this series is why Sue Johnston agreed to be in it when she says a total of ten words or so?

Oooh but she is the grand priestess of acting through looks

SleepQuest33 · 15/10/2025 11:44

I really enjoyed episode 1. Found episode 2 really boring but may persist based on freedback on this thread!

Wimwopadoo · 15/10/2025 12:02

I thought the Nisha storyline was good precisely because it was so depraved and unthinkable and a few years ago may have seemed far fetched , but then we obviously remember Nicole Smallman and Bibaa Henry who were indeed photographed by male police officers after they had been murdered in 2020. Police who were supposed to be protecting the scene. One of the officers has sent a photograph to a friend that said “Unfortunately I’m sat next to two dead birds full of stab wounds.” Horrific. And then was the Sarah Everard case of course. So depraved yes. But also frighteningly what was portrayed here was not even quite as horrific as what has actually happened in real life in the real uk by the real police in recent years .

everyoldsock · 15/10/2025 12:24

Hebden may not be the very liberal and open-minded place as portrayed here. Calder Valley has a Labour council, but the tories and Reform got a combined 40% of votes last year in the local election. Reform's share were up 15.4%.

Walkinginthesandagain · 15/10/2025 13:23

I've enjoyed this thread, not the least it's helping me focus on what I think about the series as at half way through I'm not sure if I'll bother with the rest. I should point out I'm WAY past menopause and in some ways it's making me both nostalgic and sad but, take heart, there really is a better time to come after.

Pros
A great premise
An amazing role call of astounding older women actresses
A script that is focussed on issues of concern to older women,
Gorgeous scenery
Rosalie Craig's amazing voice
Perhaps not liked by all but the character of Yvonne makes me laugh, catches the menopausal and post menopausal freedom of saying things without a filter.
Dark humour

Cons
Not enough character development, some stereotyping/cliche
It has an air of predictability (though if I proceed I might have to change my mind)

Well, it seems the Pros have it. Looks like I'll be continuing.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 15/10/2025 13:47

Yvonne is my favourite. She’s so Yorkshire.

😮
If Hebden Bridge is turning reform there’s no hope for any of us.

Well I've finish the series last night and obviously finishing in a way to make series 2 almost a necessity!

I said in an earlier post that cramming it into 6 episodes made it a bit issue tick box, 8 would have been better. But the backing singers were a tick box inclusivity line up!

And (sadly for me) I am now sort of tuned into Sallly Wainwrights tear jerker moments.

But all in all, compared to the standard of most 9pm series thought it really good.

As to why so many well known faces had such small parts I suspect they, and their agents, were beating down the doors saying please give me a part, I dont care how small. No doubt that are other actors and actresses sobbing at home that they couldn't even get a one line appearance.

I have wondered what men watching this felt about it.

My dh is enjoying this, but the whole ‘ seeing red’ anger issues and all the rest is going a bit whoosh. Lol
I was lucky to go through the menopause relatively unscathed, but it had its moments and the anger that men get away a lot of these issues was real ( my rant at the GP about how unfair it all is wasn’t my finest hour, but he was nodding along! I didn’t go on HRT in the end , but I know it’s a life saver for many!)
Sally often protrays men as either mild mannered or evil, but at least the women are not all entirely good in this either. I do want Kitty to go and cut off the bits of all the men who put her through this, but maybe a more subtle revenge may be more satisfying too.
I wonder what she’ll do.

mabelmaura · 16/10/2025 19:25

Loved all of it..I love all Sally Wainwright's writings, Amelia Bulmore ( Yvonne) was in at least one other of her dramas namely where she was Suranne Jones' police boss- forgotten the name..itv I think..
I think Kitty had such presence and the voice....Hopefully a second series is coming!

the80sweregreat · 16/10/2025 19:33

Has to be another series where she finds out more about her abusers. I’d love to find out how and what she will do to them. Did her dad say one had died and one was an undercover cop ?

Yes and I think the third in prison.

Its interesting how Sally Wainwright is able to bring in what are current news stories into a plot without it seeming out of place eg undercover police officer. Sadly.

And her dad set the scene with series 2 asking Kitty what she intended to do to them!

So whilst this plot line could be very intersting I hope we will get to learn more about the other women's stories as well.

I would love Beth to find a nice man ( one who isn’t too kinky) Kitty to get revenge ( of course ) Tricia to divorce her sleazy husband and take him to the cleaners. Find out why Yvonne and fsmily are not close.
Gerry to ditch Jess , the nasty policeman to get his comeuppance big time too!

Scott and Bailey, a few more of the cast were also it in, Holly's ex husband, the sleazy cop were both police in it and the neighbour was a serial killer 'Jeff Hastings' who appeared in a few series.

Scott & Bailey. It also featured Ben Batt as an iffy police officer but not quite as iffy as his role in this!

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2025 04:55

The one playing the nasty policeman is doing well as I just want to punch his lights out myself ;(
Dh finally got to watch the rest this week, he has loved it. I did like Kittys dad asking her ‘ what you going to do to them ‘ it is a shame he didn’t do something to them years ago himself. It was probably the under cover cop
who had her dad put away , maybe. .

DarkRootsBlue · 17/10/2025 07:17

I thought maybe Kitty’s dad was lying about the names. So that he gets revenge on whoever he wants (maybe the policeman who got him put away) without having to get his hands dirty. As he’s such a big gangster why wouldn’t he want revenge for his daughter and get his own connections to sort out the 3 men.

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2025 07:54

Maybe Kitty hid the pregnancy for ages or her dad sent her away again or she was fostered or put into care or some reason he didn’t know about it until it was too late? Why didn’t anyone suggest an abortion?
Agree dad may be lying. Only wants revenge on a copper and he isn’t actually involved in the abuse at all.
Just using Kitty to put the feelers out :( maybe her mum ran off with the undercover cop !
Kitty is only 44 too , a bit young to want HRT etc, but I know some women start the menopause younger ( or peri )

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2025 08:55

Feel sorry for Tom too. You find out your biological dad was a rapist :( how could you come to terms with that kind of information?

He was a twat to not answer her messages but that's not unusual for young people away from home in their 20s. Kitty should not have been there when he arrived and Beth should have told him without her being there. But that would have been less drama!
