Riot Women binge thread for those using BBC iPlayer

IwantToRetire · 13/10/2025 18:14

As all episodes are available on iPlayer thought I would start a binge thread for any like me who find it easier to follow a story line when there isn't a gap of 7 days.

Riot Women

No apologies - just noise. Five fierce women crank up the volume to get their voices heard. Sally Wainwright's riotous drama with Joanna Scanlan, Tamsin Greig and Rosalie Craig.

The abusers wouid only be in their late 50s now as Kitty said her abusers were 27 or 28 at the time and Tom is 31. Peter Davison is 74. He may be the dad of one of them though , but that is a tv soap kind of link! I hope that Tricia takes him to the cleaners!

This is the second time that I’ve seen Peter Davison play a horrible, creepy, husband (see also “Life” with Alison Steadman”) and he does it very well. He made me shiver in this.

I agree and that moment when he said what he did to Kitty in episode four was completely credible, which makes it even creepier. The actor is great - I remember him as the dishiest Doctor Who from back in the day.

I thought the BBC would shoehorn in a “trans” role and of course they did.
An utterly pointless character who added zero to the plot.
I was infuriated to see a man in a dress on stage in a band called Riot WOMEN and to see him singing about seeing red in menopause.
FFS.
We can’t even have fucking blood coming out of our fannies without a bloke wanting to appropriate it for his own purposes and the BBC tries to normalise this absurdity and we are all supposed to pretend this blatantly obvious he is a she.
Buggered up what was otherwise a great programme.

Agree 100%
I reckon Sally wainwright had a DEI list to include before BBC would commission it. I wouldn’t say it spoiled it for me but I did roll my eyes.
And whoever told that unit that played Miranda that he looks like a woman and can act, needs shooting.

JeffTheSquirrel · 18/10/2025 18:46

I was so pissed off about the bloke in a dress.

All the blurb about this being a FEMALE only band, going through things unique to women who come together. Then a bloke - who absolutely everyone with working eyes can see is a bloke - gets shoehorned in.

Menopause? He’ll never experience it.
Flooding periods? Same
Raped & giving birth? Same again.

I enjoyed some of it, but this really soured it for me. Us women just can’t have our own stuff, can we.

IwantToRetire · 19/10/2025 00:47

Us women just can’t have our own stuff, can we.

I was waiting to see if he would come up with some long speach about being part of the most put upon section of society and so on. But so far nothing like that.

So I decided to just see the plot line as having a cross dresser or what in the dim distance past was called a gender bender, rather than some trans evangalist.

Just started binging this series, I'm just skim reading the thread to avoid spoilers.

Regarding the man in a dress I'm wondering if he is in to show how laid back and accepting Jess and Aunty Mary are.

I am part of the punk generation and my daughter (now 39) had no idea that during my school days girls had to fight to take "boys" subjects such as woodwork and technical drawing.
We fought then and are still fighting against misogyny now.
Sorry went off on a rant then.
Really enjoying this series, loved Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax too. Apologies for typos as I'm bleary eyed this morning.

I felt this too. My initial reaction was why does that character need to be a young man larping as a woman? but then I thought, if it doesn't become all about him then I suppose it doesn't really matter. It is very cliched though.
I get more irritated when everyone is just so immediately accepting of everything. You find out your daughter, who has two children, is in a lesbian relationship and you don't even say, gosh, I never realised you were gay?
And two minutes of drunken chat immediately resolves a bitter falling out that has been festering for years.

Have you ever been to Hebden Bridge? No-one would bat an eye.
(About the lesbian bit)

SmearedLippie · 19/10/2025 10:39

I chose to ignore the trans character being wedged in pointlessly on this occasion.

The various storylines around violence against women and girls, pregnancy, menopause etc so glaringly spoke of the experiences of biological women, I wondered if the trans actor felt embarrassed to be there?

The BBC certainly should feel embarrassed.

AlanisMorningShed · 19/10/2025 21:27

I enjoyed it, was gripping in parts. Not sure about chanting about HRT though, no matter how good it may be. We're more than our hormones, hormones play a small part of my menopausal anger, but mostly it's justified anger!

I did think Kitty was unrealistically glam when she'd been up all night drinking or in a&e, still had mascara and glowing skin and hair! But loved the cast, what happened to Nisha made me sick to my stomach, I hope that cop gets his comeuppance

the80sweregreat · 19/10/2025 21:30

The cop played his role well, we all hated him and for good reason:(
what a tool. I want him to suffer at some stage

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 19/10/2025 22:30

Just finished this, really enjoyed it although was hoping to see the bent copper get his comeuppance before it finished. I was so angry after that scene, bastard.

I thought all the actresses were amazing, I’m a bit in love with Kitty, she was brilliant and what a voice.

Pinkfreedom · 19/10/2025 22:43

Am I the only one thinking that Kitty's Dad is actually using her to get revenge on his personal enemies not her abusers?

A brilliant series.

MyBeloved · 19/10/2025 22:59

Binged the whole lot in one sitting!
Bring on Season 2.
What a brilliant series.

Yes I agree, he’s an absolute toad.

Also was anyone else surprised to see Sir Jonathan Pryce as Kitty’s dad? I never thought he’d do something like this!

the80sweregreat · 20/10/2025 08:00

i found it strange that Kitty’s dad couldn’t remember much when she saw him , but did later on when he wasn’t in front of her. I also think he wants the undercover policeman to be found only for his own ends , the possibilities for stories around him are already there. She also only needs to find two men as well. Her dad knew a lot of people , I can’t imagine it won’t be too hard digging up the past, but it’s going to be painful and dangerous for her no doubt :(

He plays the Brontes’ father in Wainwright’s To Walk Invisible so they have already worked together and she does love using the same actors in different things.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 20/10/2025 08:23

Pryce has also said, “I am such an admirer of Sally Wainwright that if she were filming the phone book I would want to be in it!”

HarryVanderspeigle · 20/10/2025 21:04

From the trailer, I thought this would be a half hour per episode comedy. Obviously my error, but feeling a bit traumatised now! I would have liked more time with them singing, as there were only 2 songs of their own. But over all thought it was good and I love Tamsin Greig.

the80sweregreat · 20/10/2025 21:06

Tamsin Grieg is good. I loved her in ‘ episodes’ too.

manywanderings · 20/10/2025 21:41

Just finished watching it :-) It hadn't occurred to me that Kitty's Dad might be lying about the three men for his own revenge purposes. But the ending really annoyed me. Let me see if I can put this into words. Tom has just been reconciled to her and they have a kind of relationship now. I loved the part where he stepped up to support her at court and his "son" loyalty kicked in.

So what annoys me is this - SURELY she is not going to put Tom through more trauma - actually finding out who his paedophile Dad is. The only way to find out is if Tom has a dna test. He would have to be party to it. Now if she hadn't had a baby from the rape, then sure - track him down and get him imprisoned. And I hope this thought doesn't offend anyone, but my thinking is - so maybe protect Tom and not have him have to confront a paedophile Father (by confront I mean see or hear the details). And maybe kinder to say she didn't know who they were - which is true - and leave it like that. Now if Tom were to say - we need to track him down and have him punished for what "he" did to you - that would be different. But he has a hell of a lot of stuff to process as it is. So what annoyed me was the idea that Kitty might jeopardise everything that's been achieved by doing something stupid out of revenge - taking revenge into her own hands eg. Or even if she didn't - that she may become obsessed with tracking these men down and getting them brought to justice. Long court cases, Tom having to give a dna sample, and having it publicly shown that his real father was a criminal and paedophile.

Maybe I'm wrong here but I'm thinking about the child of the rape. I believe some Mothers keep details to themselves to the death, to protect the child.

As it is - Kitty has already lied (maybe to save Tom some trauma) by letting him think it was only one man. If she pursues the two remaining ones, he will find out she lied to him - and that won't help. But maybe it'll be ok if she explains.

Anyway I know, we're going to have to wait for another series to find out. But my gut feeling is - don't put Tom through that! Leave the idea of a distant blur of a bad man.

I don't know what I'm talking about though! It's big stuff!

IwantToRetire · 20/10/2025 21:53

Yes but, do you think the son has more rights than the mother who has been abused, and lost most of her adult life to feeling guilty that she was somehow complicit in her own rape.

Whilst Tom has had what seems quite a good childhood and up until the end was rude and uncaring to his adoptive mother, and disdainful of Kitty for being a wreck?

I know - it's big stuff. If he wants to know then yes. But maybe he doesn't - we'll have to wait and find out. He and Kitty were good by the end and all I kept thinking was - don't wreck the relationship. As I say it was just that fear that it may be too much for Tom to handle .............. They probably all need counselling!

yes but ... what about Kitty's rights. If they are ignored because of him that would wreck the relationship.

I thought that Fearne’s dad ( Peter Davison ) and the one who played Beth’s neighbour were the same man only in disguise with the glasses! To think I used to have such a crush on PD in ‘ all creatures ‘ in the late 70s, yet he is such a sleaze bag in this :(
I feel that someone like Kitty wouldn’t be as liked as much she is in this. I know she’s had a few disapproving looks, but many of those people wouldn’t give her the time of day in real life!
It is fun though and well written. I expect to see
Catherine Cawood pop up ! Only on episode four so far. Trying not to binge the rest.

Mr Molesley from Downton Abbey.

No, not for me.

Too overdone.
