Riot Women binge thread for those using BBC iPlayer

As all episodes are available on iPlayer thought I would start a binge thread for any like me who find it easier to follow a story line when there isn't a gap of 7 days.

Riot Women

No apologies - just noise. Five fierce women crank up the volume to get their voices heard. Sally Wainwright's riotous drama with Joanna Scanlan, Tamsin Greig and Rosalie Craig.

I've watch 2 episodes so far.

I'm torn between finding some parts really good, and then every now and again thinking that's a bit cringe.

I’m up to episode five, quite enjoying it so far. I feel the same as you - sone bits are good, some cringe worthy.

Loving the appropriate use of caps, btw 😉

BishyBarnyBee · 13/10/2025 21:57

Just finished Episode 3.

Really didn't like Episode 1 much, I was expecting a comedy and it was so very dark. Then remembered that Happy Valley wasn't exactly a laugh a minute, decided it was mostly a drama with occasional lighter moments and have enjoyed it from there in.

It's a bit heavy handed but lots of powerful stuff. Some of the dementia details could be lifted straight from the Mumsnet Cockroach Cafe.

A strong cast who are mostly pretty believable so you can see past the fact it's Joanna Scanlon and Tamsin Greig and believe in their characters. And Rosalie Craig's singing is phenomenal. Will definitely stick with it.

CherryogDog · 13/10/2025 22:05

I finished it today, I loved it!

DarkRootsBlue · 14/10/2025 07:22

I binged it yesterday, I really enjoyed it. It’s a bit clunky at times but I loved the energy of it. Kitty’s voice is great too. The one thing I didn’t like were their songs, they were just way too pointed. Chanting for HRT etc. They could have had great songs without being so literal.

everyoldsock · 14/10/2025 07:27

Yes, the songs did nothing for me either. I was much more interested in the family dynamics.

MagpiePi · 14/10/2025 10:58

I watched the first three episodes last night and will probably watch the rest at some point.

The song lyrics are a bit clunky and sound like they were written by a teenager IMO, but I like the dynamics between the characters. I wish I had Rosalie Craig's hair!

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 14/10/2025 11:20

I binged them all last night! I did enjoy them but think they need to do a second series, lots to unpick and all the characters can evolve.

OverlyFragrant · 14/10/2025 11:23

I really do like the show, have watched all episodes.
My biggest bug bear is the characters aren't fully developed, apart from Kitty. I get there's only so much you can do in the 6 episodes, but I wish their backgrounds, hopes, fears and dreams were really explored. As it stands its akin to a band full of backing singers instead of talent of their own, ironic really.
Also, the men are so poorly written, this is a change when its usually women that are one dimensional characters. Of course, the only male that gets a free pass from being a misogynistic bell end is the one that wears a dress.
Plus ca change.
The soundtrack is banging though.

OddBoots · 14/10/2025 11:26

I've not seen this yet but I did watch 'We are Lady Parts' on Channel 4 and it feels like it gives similar vibes. Has anyone here watched both and been able to compare them?

LemograssLollipop · 14/10/2025 13:51

Finished watching the last two episodes today. Very hard hitting. Couldn't help but binge it.
Wondered if a second series is being lined up with the dad recalling the names.
Did not like the man child Tom.
As pp said, I'm sure Mumsnet has been mined for themes. At one point Jess says,"What fresh hell is this?" !!!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 14/10/2025 13:59

I’ve watched the first two, was hoping for a binge thread so thank you op.
I loved the ‘just like my mother’ song.

Greedybilly · 14/10/2025 14:01

I like the sound track and want to like the show but it's making me cringe. Bit sad as was looking fwd to it but I think completely over hyped.

the80sweregreat · 14/10/2025 16:55

I thought that Fearne’s dad ( Peter Davison ) and the one who played Beth’s neighbour were the same man only in disguise with the glasses! To think I used to have such a crush on PD in ‘ all creatures ‘ in the late 70s, yet he is such a sleaze bag in this :(
I feel that someone like Kitty wouldn’t be as liked as much she is in this. I know she’s had a few disapproving looks, but many of those people wouldn’t give her the time of day in real life!
It is fun though and well written. I expect to see
Catherine Cawood pop up ! Only on episode four so far. Trying not to binge the rest.

VaddaABeetch · 14/10/2025 16:57

I turned it off as soon as I saw there was a man larping as a woman. Are there not enough older actresses to fill the roles?

the80sweregreat · 14/10/2025 16:59

I feel sorry for Gerry the beer delivery man. He is one of the better ones , yet Jess treats him badly.
Most of the men in this are horrible though. I hope the policeman gets found out :( what an absolute disgrace he is :( sadly too well written.

StewkeyBlue · 14/10/2025 17:01

Do you mean Miranda , a child of Jess’s?
Hardly ‘older ‘?

Also it’s Hebden Bridge: for authenticity one of them surely had to have a trans family member or friend!

everyoldsock · 14/10/2025 17:16

I think Rosalie Craig is miscast here - she’s just too clean cut and together to convince as Kitty.

the80sweregreat · 14/10/2025 17:27

Maybe it was Rosalie’s voice which won the day when they were casting her! She does look too clean cut for all she has been through, but she was with that Gavin and maybe he just threw money at her or she went to rehab historically or something? We don’t know a lot about her background really. It’s all hinted at mostly.
His another nasty one though :(

Summerhillsquare · 14/10/2025 18:04

Is it not just a rip off of the C4 series with the Muslim women?

IwantToRetire · 14/10/2025 18:30

Have skipped all today's post as have now watched up to episode 4.

And hope to finish tonight so want to see it all before reading other comments.

Had thought the charity show would be the final part of the last episode, so am wondering where the plot is going.

Do feel that the plot is trying to fit in everyone of the (sadly true) "women's problems" that so many experience.

And the family connections are a bit too overtly tear jerking.

But still think it is good, and better that so much of the 9pm same old same old series that get put on.

I'm wondering why they could give it 8 episodes. It might have let the plot develop more naturally rather than thinking we need to bring in this issue, and then rush on to the next one.

Is it a BBC thing. Blue Lights was only 6.

the80sweregreat · 14/10/2025 18:37

Like so many dramas and soaps , the writers are trying to shoe horn in so many problems. At the moment it seems like it’s dementia which is getting a lot more air time and it really strikes a cord with me as family members had this. At least Sally has it right with the mention of the care home fees and auditory hallucinations, which many people have never heard of.

the80sweregreat · 14/10/2025 18:39

I hope that the policeman is found out. I am hoping there may be cctv around he didn’t notice when he made his colleague fall off that ledge on purpose. Such a scum bag :(

Middlemarch123 · 14/10/2025 19:24

Haven’t watched it yet, What fresh hell is this, and the setting of Hendon Bridge, straight out of Last Tango in Halifax, also by Sally Wainwright. Looking forward to joining the thread when I’ve started watching it.

the80sweregreat · 14/10/2025 21:41

OMG! I want series two straight away!
I want her to have her revenge ! Big time
go kitty
