Yes it's fine that Carrie is rich because of her husband and it was as much her money as his. BUT being rich has made Carrie boring and unrelatable. They have also fused her character with SJP the way they did with Miranda/CN. SJP presents as this dignified, stylish, self possessed manhattan rich lady which is fine but Carrie was a mess! She was a PITA but I related to her being a mess when I was in my 20s. And she's still a mess! The whole Aidan situation was crazy. She bought a house for his kids FFS! She's talking about being with him for 20 plus years! She's airbrushing Big! And her friends don't call her out? Worse, she has no self awareness! Carrie of old at least knew when she was being a hot mess and would own up to it. We need to see Carrie acknowledging she was mad worth Aidan and maybe a reflection about the impact of grief. But we are getting nothing.

Big being airbrushed from the show this season and the previous one was the executive’s at HBO’s way of distancing themselves from Chris Noth, whose alleged misconduct was never proved. HBO don’t care about authentic storytelling and character development - they won’t want their SATC / AJLT brand tarnished.

True, sharing assets is the legal position. I doubt MNers would have told Carrie she was fine doing very little paid work for most of her life though.

Though one could argue being married to Big was a full time job.
It's odd she never mentioned him after S1.

Edited

She had a long running career as a columnist that pivoted into a successful book writing career. She had 7 best sellers as of AJLT series 3. That's not 'doing very little paid work for most of her life', that's a woman at the top of her game in her chosen field.

Ok.

I’ve just been reminded about when Big is first being discussed in SATC… Doesn’t Samantha say something like, that guy, he’s the next Donald Trump??!! Run away!!!!!!

Big must have been loaded though: when he and Carrie are looking at apartments in the first movie: that beautiful apartment – Heaven on 5th or something like that? – And he says to her, I got this. That must’ve cost a fortune! So I guess he was already loaded when she got there… A bit like Heather Mills and Paul McCartney 🤣🤣🤣

Yes 🤣 although Trump was nowhere near so much of a horror show in those days

Agree that Carrie being rich made her boring and unrelatable. I’m not at all interested in any of that. I like to see the real struggles of real life. Ok, so it wasn’t ever really ‘real struggling’ but it was something many women could relate to.

And 100% they’ve merged Carrie with SJP. The way she talks, her mannerisms, her aloofness. That’s SJP (I guess). It certainly isn’t what Carrie used to be. And yes, we evolve and change with age but even so.

I’m not really interested in the boring sex lives of the rich and famous. Give me the girl who couldn’t afford dinner and would buy vogue instead.

edited to add. And the dreadful fucking book. ‘The Woman’ sounds like something SJP might write, Not Carrie Bradshaw.

MinnieBaldock · 11/08/2025 05:31

I used to like Carrie when she would say Sir to anyone she was asking a question, like the shoe seller in SATC 2 movie, when he had her passport. I thought she had very good manners.
I don't know why she just dosnt remember Big being the love of her life, I mean she couldn't even read the chapter of her book when he was dying in her arms, she kept breaking down. Now its like he never existed. It makes no sense.
Miranda and Brody are the same people and I hope Joy leaves with her lovely dogs.

MinnieBaldock · 11/08/2025 05:32

Sorry I meant Brady(not the shark killing cop from jaws).

BabyCatFace · 11/08/2025 07:36

Can you imagine reading a whole novel where the protagonist doesn't have a name?!

Ok ok so it could work but not carrie's novel!

Agreed! The two exams only serve to proof it absolutely can he done to great effect. Just not if it's the Mills and Boon crap Carrie is churning out.

Doubleraspberry · 11/08/2025 08:43

The main character not being named is only going to work in first person narrative I’d have thought. (Waiting now for someone to have an example otherwise!)

Just catching up due to holidays/no VPN. Two thoughts:

  1. In a previous series, Steve told Carrie that he would NEVER stop wearing Miranda’s wedding ring. He wasn’t wearing it when Brady spilled the beans re: the pregnancy.
  2. The end of each series ALWAYS leaves cliff hangers. Because it sounds like this was a last-minute cancellation, I would put money on the writers not having written a finale. So we will be left with so many cliffhangers…Brady’s baby, Anthony’s wedding (is his divorce with Stanford even finalised?), Duncan, buying the servant flat below Carrie’s house, etc, etc. And they won’t have written in a closure for Samantha either, as they weren’t expecting an end to the show.
SheilaFentiman · 11/08/2025 21:43

I just watched the very first AJLT episode, oh, the chemistry between Carrie and Big, the smiles and love and affection. Eff you, MPK, pretending it was Carrie and Aidan all along.

Chasingcrazypaving · 12/08/2025 01:21

Something has been bothering me, apart from the aiden shit show and various other things about this show. As a die hard fan of the franchise I have finally figured out what it is.

Carrie doesn't actually like Miranda anymore.

They have had a tumultuous but lovely friendship over the years but since season 1 of And Just like that... Carrie has actually been pretty cold to her. Especially in this last season. There was none of the warmth. Even when we seen Carrie admit she had been defensive about Duncan she said how Miranda would be loving it, seemed almost said with a bit of contempt rather than a warm friendship irony.

Same with the way she acted towards her several times this season. The not wanting Seema to help her because she only helps rich people, being weird about the karaoke machine.

Hmm.

@ConstantlyFuriosa

Have you read SJPs instagram post about it ending?

It seemed so fake and pretentious to me. Like she believes she is a writer like her character.

I haven’t but I believe it. I think she’s got to a point where she really believes she’s bigger than the show. Or is the show.

I’ve always liked SJP. Back in the day, like many others I thought I was mostly like Carrie - or wanted to be, although rewatching SatC years later I saw what a bloody narcissist she was. So self-obsessed and never a very good friend to the others who were always there in support of her. In spite of that, I still loved Carrie, because she was relatable. And I loved SJP. Not least because of all the horrible shit she got about her appearance. It pissed me off no end. I always thought she was jolie laide and that’s a massive compliment, btw.

In the first couple of series of AJLT, SJP was still ‘Carrie’, but in this latest series, she’s just so very SJP - or how I imagine an uptight SJP to be. She has these mannerisms that I’ve noticed - this stillness; touching a hand lightly to her face; very little emotion. It’s quite irritating actually.

Something has changed for the worse and I’m not entirely sure what. I suppose in part this could be my reaction to the feud she has with Kim Cattrall who was never my favourite character, but upon rewatches I love a lot.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 12/08/2025 02:34

Small bit of my history that I only realised in recent years.

Over Christmas in 1979, I went to visit my dad in America and we went to see Little Orphan Annie on broadway. I had no idea at the time who played Annie. I just loved the experience. It was fantastic.

Many years later, there I was loving SatC and SJP in particular. I was drawn to her and the character of Carrie. She really was my favourite. And it’s only in very recent years that I’ve discovered she would have been the one playing Annie in my first ever experience of the theatre and not just the theatre, but broadway!

Perhaps Miranda getting in on with Che in her kitchen while Carrie recovered from hip surgery had something g to do with it!
