A thread to discuss the addictive and bingeable DCC series. Series 2 out today.

Ooh, thanks for the reminder! DH has gone away for work today so will start it this evening when the kids have gone to bed 😁

onceuponatimeinneverland · 18/06/2025 09:09

Ooh, I did wonder if it was a new series,!

EggMonster · 18/06/2025 09:15

I only saw some of the first series, but thought it was dark and sad — and nakedly exploitative. I’d had no idea they were so badly paid, that they all had day jobs and trained at night, or that so many adult woman of apparently average intelligence sucked up the spin that they were living out some kind of vocation! Every time I saw the dentist (orthodontist) trying to perfect her high kick, and being criticised by the coaches, my mind was slightly blown. And poor Victoria, obviously vulnerable, unpopular, isolated, eating-disordered, much too eager to please. And Reece (was it?), the baby-faced Christian whose God appeared perfectly for her to be a high-kicking Playboy centrefold and who was bafflingly engaged to a man who looked like a pinkish potato, and had about as much personality?

VagueVogue · 18/06/2025 09:23

Yeh Reece is a fan fave but she's almost too good to be true. And marrying the first boy you kiss from bible club is crazy behavior. I bet there's so much competitive ED adjacent disordered eating.

OMG I was so fascinated by this series. I follow Reece on insta, she has married the potato headed one now

I think she does well from advertising deals, she's always doing promo posts.

It was glaringly obvious those 2 women running it only want a few token black dancers. Always picking fault with them.

The way these girls tear their bodies apart- one of them had hip surgery at 25. All for Maccies wages. I think the opportunity for side deals off the back of it/starting own dance schools etc is where the money is.

I couldn’t believe DCC had allowed Netflix to do such a negative portrayal - their brand is so tight, and after billions of seasons of their Making the Team TV show, which was totally different in tone (I watched some after I saw the first Netflix series - went down a bit of a rabbit hole on early mat leave!), seemed an odd decision for them. Totally fascinating though, so excited there’s more. Such a surprisingly nuanced psychological portrayal. I hope we catch up with poor Victoria! I just wanted to tell her she was worth so much more!! All those stunning talented women are!

VagueVogue · 18/06/2025 10:22

Reece saying she wants people to look at her and see Jesus was hilarious. He's famously known for tiny white micro shorts.

Have rewatched season 1 in preparation for series 2 which I'm just starting now. Feels like a very different vibe with the start of this series, showing all the "rules" they have and one of the girls saying it's time to change.

It's such a different culture to the one in the UK, called Kelly and Judi ma'am, the very heavy focus on religion etc. Its fascinating, although I don't know how the women don't tell Kelly and Judi to get stuffed with all their nitpicking and criticism.

Really? How awful. I thought that surely she would awaken from whatever catatonic state she’d been in when she met him and realise she had options. I mean, her entire personality appears to be ‘I’m sweet, squeaky-clean, and unable to drink a milkshake without thanking Jesus for it’, but even being fairly one-dimensional and pretty gives you options!

Absolutely. Microshorts tailored to your starting body size, and which you must continue to fit into on pain of hellfire. Or the scary coach saying ‘Is she fuelling herself too well?’

VagueVogue · 18/06/2025 20:29

Why are all the boyfriends always such a total doofus.

Debsthegardener · 18/06/2025 20:34

I’m here for it! Although I did have a feeling of self loathing when I binge watched the first series lol. I’ve got over that now in time for the new series. Phew!

At least the potato doofus boyfriend seemed harmless and (correctly) in awe of his luck. Maybe she’s made a savvy choice there…!

Sandy420 · 18/06/2025 20:48

It always feels a bit car crash to me, and so hypocritical. Girls have to be demure on social media or they're gone - but it's fine for DCC to ship them off for a bikini calendar shoot and have them dance in the teeny tiniest outfits. The pay is just shocking too.

I love Victoria, I remember her from the first series, or making the team (not sure if they're the same thing) but she really struggled socially and I always wandered if she was undiagnosed ASD. The way she talked with her mum on her birthday and how awkward she could be, she was so young emotionally. Eating disorders are also common in girls/women with ASD. I just felt that the ultra competitiveness of DCC was just a terrible fit for her, full of bitchy girls pretending they love each other.

I really think it's time for Kelli and Judy to retire so things can move on with the DCC. Mind you at least they don't have 'Miss Kitty' on anymore, she was a completely nasty bitch. Basically emotionally abused the kids, would shove them even, it was just awful - and apparently she didn't like the way she was portrayed! She was on a complete power trip and it was really disturbing to watch.

Bickybics · 18/06/2025 21:07

I hate reality shows but I am very invested in this. Maybe because I recognise that fake female relationship thing, they all love each other and they are all BFFs but probably would push each other under a bus for a place.
If you don’t fit they will take you down (Victoria) so horrible.
It’s also weird how they pretend they are doing something so amazing, when really they are there for men to look at them in tiny outfits.

They take it so seriously, you’d think they were curing cancer, for crying out loud.

Men would look at Bugs Bunny if he was wearing those hot pants and dancing.

Kellie prides herself on being direct, but all she really does is leave the poor girls hanging, while there are loaded pregnant pauses. All while making sneering eye contact with the other one.

TokyoSushi · 18/06/2025 22:34

Also absolutely fascinated by this in a slightly horrified by it all way, so of course will definitely be watching series 2!

SummerEve · 18/06/2025 22:34

There is another good thread about this as well - I wish I knew how to do links!

Bickybics · 19/06/2025 08:52

DH sat with me and is appalled they aren’t paid well. They are athletes. They deserve to be able to dedicate their full day to training and care, no wonder they get injured.

JellyBeanSpring25 · 19/06/2025 09:38

I watched Eps 1, 2 and 3 last night! Agree there’s a different feel being in the ‘audience’ this time.

It was interesting watching them watching themselves on the Netflix Series One and how they reacted. Good to see Victoria, I follow her and she’s doing well in New York.

I don’t know if it was my TV but at times, often when showing photos, the screen would go blank. I wonder if there’s been some unfavourable reaction and Netflix have redacted parts?

I’d love to see them perform Thunder in real life!

VagueVogue · 19/06/2025 10:33

They're talented athletes, of course the outfits are all titillation but they shouldn't have to work other FT jobs alongside it when it's such a huge commitment and demand.

If it was the UK at least one of those girls who was jibbed off at training camp would have told Kelli and Judy to go fuck themselves.
