What’s the best TV Series you’ve watched in the last 5 years?

For me it’s the German Series Dark on Netflix and the American series 1883 which is Paramount + but has now turned up on Netflix.

Dark which was about time travel really made you think and 1883 about Pioneer life/Cowboys was just quietly beautiful

Another vote for The Handmaids Tale. Some scenes are so powerful they will stay with me always. The filming of it, the acting, and the music were all perfect. I think when it ends I will watch it again.

For lighter relief, Ted Lasso, Motherland, Gavin and Stacey and Trying (for the lovely Raife Spall).

I hope it's already been mentioned because it was so good. The OA. I enjoyed the first series, the second was even better. I was excited that they had the whole thing sorted, five seasons, story had a begining, middle and end and what larks. And Netflix binned it. I remain totally gutted!

I was also enjoying A League of Their Own where we got actual lesbians unlike in the film but that was a one and gone so would it have held up? Glow got more of a go but still ended before it ended and I enjoyed that.

There must be more but in terms of best ever, it's outside five years. Fleabag which ended so beautifully and had the hottest scene in any episode of any series I've ever watched. And then for very different reasons I'd say a tied first place in I LOVED these both so much, each of them changed something in me, The Wire and Mad Men. If I had to choose just one, Mad Men.Not one episode that let me down.

Still gutted about The OA though. I'd try to describe it but it was unique. Definitely in sci-fi realm but in such a way that to describe says nothing about what you are really seeing and feeling, so watch it if it's still there, or watch a couple of episodes to see what we all missed, or don't because you'll be gutted too. But thanks to lots of mentions of Dark which I meant to watch and need to get around to now! I love time travel!

Jinx! Bloody loved trying, their chemistry was incredible and it wasn't a shock that they've ended up together!

I've missed the first two episodes of The Handmaid's Tale! That's my Sunday afternoon nicely sorted. The Handmaid's Tale followed later by Antique's Roadshow because that's the way I roll.

I agree it's been a great but sometimes verging on too dark. I've also got a bit tired of June's goggle eyed face but really enjoyed the last series a lot more because we opened up more I think. I'm very much glad it's back and fingers crossed we get to a satisfying ending. Plus you have The Testaments to come and that'll give us much more Aunt Lydia who remains a very interesting character and more so in The Testaments where we get to know her better.

True Detective- watched season 5 last year with Jodie foster. Each season is set in a different location, time, and has different detectives.

we also watched the last season of Fargo, sooooooo good

Was "Years and Years" in the last 5 years? I've lost track of time. Anyway, that's probably the best series I've ever seen.

"It's A Sin". Not sure if that one was last 5 years or not either.

Loving The Handmaid's Tale at the moment.

Think either Slow Horses or Severance, but have enjoyed lots of others too, The Handmaids Tale, Yellowjackets and Squid Game are a few that spring to mind.

You've just reminded me I need to keep watching Dark, I watched the first season then stopped!

Agree Slow Horses.

@ChessorBuckaroo Point taken. The cinematography was what I meant by it.

I’ve just been told off for praising 1883 but it’s brilliant television

1923’s second series wasn’t great

The one about the police service in Belfast but I can't remember its name.

Gangs of London was good.

Bad Sisters.

I really liked that Belfast police series too - was it called Blue Light?

PiggyPigalle · 10/05/2025 23:25

The Bureau, French Spies
and
Spiral, French Cops

Purplebunnie · 10/05/2025 23:25

Detectorists recently watched this, didn't see it first time round. Quintessentially English

Late to the party but have just binge watched Stranger Things ready for season 5. Have enjoyed it very much, lots of scary and lots of crying, really invested in the characters

I also echo The English - the haunting song is some say (I got Devil) by Melanie

The Burning Girls

A Good Girls Guide to Murder

The Witcher

The Sandman

Psychic detection series Lockwood something or other.

@Ohwhatakerfuffle LOVED this - House Of Bamboo!

@GretaGip You mean Blue Lights which is excellent

I hate you!!
I had House of Bamboo stuck as an earworm for days and now it's back 😂

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 10/05/2025 23:26

@ChessorBuckaroo To add just because a tv drama is about a problematic period of history doesn’t mean it can’t be well done. I loved it. So shoot me.
