I know I'm incredibly sad/strange person, but it's one of my favourite TV experiences. Someone share my excitement please.

At least Aled Jones got a bit of extra work with the skating!

BouncingTurtle · 25/05/2008 07:56

DH told me the results this morning. What a crock of shit.

that Russia won, and that Greece did so well.

Political bloc voting at its absolute worse.
What a fucking farce. Don't think our song deserved to win, but it deserved a lot more than 14 points. I hope Andy won't be too upset, bless him, he was fab.

Disappointed the Latvians didn't do better.

3andnomore · 25/05/2008 09:41

Well, really enjoyed watching it last night...until it was time to vote!
I honest to god don't get the political voting thing....I really don't...I mean....do people really sit at their phones to vote with thinking oh must vote for my neighbour countries, and shite like that?
I mean, I am a german living in teh UK, but I don't think I have ever voted for Germany, because, well, their entries are crap, therefore don't deserve to win...I vote for the entry/entries that I like most, no matter which country it is...!
Must admit, the whole political voting makes it a bit boring in the end and also makes it pointless ffor a lot of countries to even take part...just to depressing

I agree with whoever said it on an earlier page...UK should have gone with the ex-Maria contender....I said it at the time, that would maybe give some votes from russia/poland etc...and it was really crazy, just the right thing for Eurovision.
Andy did deserve more points then he got, though...although his song really reminded me of another song, early 90's one...

3andnomore · 25/05/2008 09:47

I think it's that Sydney Youngblood song -"If only I could" it is reminding me off....or is it...lol

Heated · 25/05/2008 10:10

It won't be the same without Sir Terry. I read that the UK, Spain, France and Germany put the most funds into the show but of course don't stand a chance of winning.

Do you also think it had anything to with Andy being black? There is some appalling racism in Eastern European football, Poland, Slovakia and Czechoslovakia have all been criticised by UEFA and other football bodies for their racist chanting against black players, even their own.

Heated · 25/05/2008 10:12

Btw it was San Remo I was thinking of, more embarrassing is that I've been to both & they're nothing alike

hoppybird · 25/05/2008 10:16

I have a deep love of the Eurovision song contest and shamelssly enjoy it every year. I like the cheesiness, the comedy rntries, the good, solid eurosongs, with the very occasional sprinkling of listenable tunes. I love the fun and spectacle of it all, and the huge amount of effort put into its staging.

I really liked the Latvian pirates, the metal from Finland (they came across unintentionally Spinal Tap in interviews as well!) I liked the old guys from Croatia and France's amazing first for singing in English! Some of the semi-final dropouts were good too - I was very sad to see Malta and Andorra go in the semis.

However, like other posters, I'm finding that the political voting is really spoiling it, and as Terry said last night, it's not a music contest anymore. TW was genuinely gutted last night, and I can see why he is reconsidering being involved in Eurovision. It really was the worst example of political voting so far, and it can only get worse.

3andnomore - oh, I have to disagree with you there! Germany produced one of the finest Eurovision entries a couple of years ago (when Lordi won the contest) with 'Never Ever' from the superb Texas Lightning!

hoppybird · 25/05/2008 10:19

oops, that should read 'No, No Never' not 'Never Ever'.

3andnomore · 25/05/2008 10:27

hoppy, yes, I that was a decent enough entry, you are right....but what about some of teh previous years, lol!
Guildo hat euch lieb God, I was so glad I was watching that Eurovision songcontest in Germany, so, didn't need to feel guilty about not voting Germany, lol

or this one, that woman reminds me of Home and Aways Morag Bellingham, lol

and Stefan Raab was just bad

fsmail · 25/05/2008 11:44

I thought the greek entry was really good sorry folks. Turkey not bad either. Russian song crap. I don't think Andy's song was that good but it was a lot better than some of the others. I voted though for Bosnia, if they had looked a bit more normal it actually sounded like a good brit pop classic, Embrace meets Pulp, just shame about the outfits. When is Noel Gallagher going to write one for us?

madmuggle · 26/05/2008 08:21

The muggle is glad that Greek track lost out, as it was as dull as the dishwater in my kitchen sink:/ Plus, the singer was an annoying bint

Russia's song didn't do much for me at first, however it grew on me rather a lot from the semis onwards with the help of the divine skating skills of Evgeny

paddingtonbear1 · 26/05/2008 08:34

dh was going to vote for the Turkish song at the last minute, but with 2 mins to go they took the numbers off the screen!!
we thought the Greek entry would do well, it was a good 'eurovision' song. What a nightmare the voting was though, it really spoils it now. Don't blame TW for wanting to give it up but I'm not sure I'd watch if he did.
Andy's song wasn't brilliant but he did a good performance and it was worth more points than, say, the Spanish effort!

RustyBear · 26/05/2008 12:56

If Terry Wogan does give up I think Jamila169 should take over
The 'let's keep the gas on' comment was worthy of Terry at his finest!

UnquietDad · 27/05/2008 08:16

Hmmm, Sir Tel has just said on his show that Andy Abraham knew he wasn't going to get many votes "for one particular reason, which we can't mention..."

Whatever can he mean?

Is it becoz ee is black?

wotulookinat · 27/05/2008 08:29

It wouldn't be the same without Terry.
Shame the pirate song didn't do better (was it Latvia? I forget).

UnquietDad · 27/05/2008 08:43

He's being equivocal on whether he will return...

UnquietDad · 27/05/2008 08:45

fsmail "When is Noel Gallagher going to write one for us?"

You have a good general point there. I think the UK should give up on the idea of trying to sound "Europop" and instead send an act representative of the kind of music people abroad associate with this country - a 4-piece retro-styled group, with singer, guitarist, bassist and drums, performing a Mersey/Britpop style song with a great melody and harmonies.

fishie · 27/05/2008 08:49

terry gets drunker as finale goes on and always says something stupid at the end. i bet he is horrified in cold light of morning that he more or less resigned on air. (and i wish he would)

eurovision will survive but it has to evolve a bit or return to panel votes. it isn't a western european competition any more and people just have to get over that.

RustyBear · 27/05/2008 10:10

Yes, UQD I think he meant because he is black - Radio Five were doing an interview yesterday with a couple of Eurovision experts & one of them was asked if it was true that the eastern european countries would never vote for a black singer - he said "I'm glad you said that because I would never dare to"

3andnomore · 27/05/2008 10:39

RB, that is shocking and very sad...but I fear, it is also true....people can be so ignorant...
