I'm in tears. Maybe I'm just emotional but can't believe how much the show means to me

And the ending... tidy!

I think Gavin and Stacey with their role playing are morphing into Dawn and Pete

I think they're just channeling their parents, Gwen, Pam and Mick have all shown themselves to like a bit of role play over all the series!

Loved it - was fab although puzzled by a few things….

Why didn’t Baby Neil go on the coach with the others to stop. Nessa from leaving?

why didn’t any of Smithy’s family go to Nessa and his wedding?

Gavin and Stacey only appeared to have 2 daughters, yet previously they had 3 kids? What happened to the 3rd child?!

Thought it was a perfect ending.

They have 3 kids
2 girls who were bridesmaids
and a boy Harry who if you recall Pam was saying these are our seats etc at the Sonia wedding
we also see Stacey ask Pete and dawn to look after the kids (I took this to include Neil)
Neil's singing was immense and linked him so closely to Nessa

I think the reason smithy's family didn't attend his Nessa wedding was because it was clearly in Barry as they end up at the dolphin and they just did it impromptu and low key
smithys mum may have said I can't go to another wedding Neil and his sister may have struggled to get there with all 4 kids (she mentions 4 names and we see 2 older boys at the Sonia wedding) if it were in Barry

eklaljdj · 26/12/2024 09:07

My favourite moment was Mick's speech, it explained the relationship Smithy had with the family, it explained a lot that had never really been asked before, and made me love Pam and Mick more.

Copperoliverbear · 26/12/2024 09:07

Yes I thought it was fantastic. X

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 26/12/2024 09:10

The part at the hen do where Sonia doesn’t know his biggest fear and Nessa quietly says it. Made me tear up.

tinytemper66 · 26/12/2024 09:15

Not yet!

Parkrunmum10 · 26/12/2024 09:16

Oh and Neil the baby has been acted by the same little boy since he was an actual baby
think this is partially a nod to that when he's called Neil the baby 🫣

I loved it, but felt like Blackbird was a really weird choice for a wedding song. I know it was about Nessa and Smithy "waiting for this moment to arrive" and their freedom to express their feelings etc, but for Smithy and Sonia's wedding it was a weird choice!

They show also has a long history of using totally inappropriate songs for weddings and christenings etc

SirChenjins · 26/12/2024 09:18

I don’t see Nessa settling for a quiet life in Essex - I think she’ll go off on the kind of mad adventures she’d had in her younger days while Smithy and Neil build up the business and keep the home fires burning for her to return to in between the crazy stuff.

Maboscelar · 26/12/2024 09:27

MasterShardlake · 26/12/2024 07:57

So you stopped your parents watching after 45 mins because you weren't enjoying it?

Yes. It was so dire I couldn't take it any more. They weren't that bothered anyway and were recording it at home and said they would watch it later. If it had been the hour long I was expecting I would have watched the last but I couldn't take another 45 minutes of the utter drivel and my parents weren't too fussed.

Parkrunmum10 · 26/12/2024 09:27

MyOtherProfile · 26/12/2024 08:42

DH and I spent a good 10 minutes when we woke up this morning discussing whether Ness and Smithy would live in Barry or Essex. Then we remembered they're not real people 😆

We also decided they might do a special in about 10 years time just as a standalone story, but that like the Detectorists they probably shouldn't as they hit the pinnacle last night.

I had this exact discussion
I think Nessa and smithy will live in Essex
Neil has his college course and it'll be a chance to be a family together in a new setting
that was in my imagination they continue to host Christmas and other key occasions with G and S over the years until Neil decides to move back to Barry after college and his mum and dad go with them

TheChosenTwo · 26/12/2024 09:28

I watched it this morning.
I didn’t like the last Christmas special, found it really forced and scripted (yes I know it was scripted and not meant to be improv), like they knew they had to cover certain things and they’d shoehorned it all in.
This one I liked more. Although the Dave/gwen bit was strange. And it was clear to me that the Sonia wedding would go wrong and that smithy and Nessa would get together.
little Neil playing the guitar and singing was great!
and I loved revisiting the arcade 🤣

MrsLargeEmbodied · 26/12/2024 09:03

i think Gavin and Stacey with their role playing are morphing into Dawn and Pete, but without the Drama

It's harking to Pam and Mick
when they do Charles and Camilla etc
I sort of loved the keep they glasses bit 😆

Itisjustmyopinion · 26/12/2024 09:34

I enjoyed it but I was the only person in my house that did. Everyone else thought that it could have been better and didn’t live up to the hype. After watching the other Christmas specials over the last couple of days I would rank this third out of the the three

I definitely think they could bring it back if they wanted to, it’s just that they don’t want to. The comments from James and Ruth around “it can’t come back and when you see the end you will know why” were not exactly true

I did have a couple of “oh my Christ” moments, one when it was revealed who the bride was and when it was revealed who Gwen’s boyfriend was 😂

See I disagree
the whole point of the series is the hum drum life people find joy in
she lived in Barry for a long time working the slots and her crazy side businesses- the idea of them getting married and being apart is odd but perhaps in a way very smithy and Nessa 🤷‍♀️

Tighnawhat · 26/12/2024 09:39

I managed to avoid most of the hype, and I hadn’t watched series 3 or the Xmas specials - no idea why they passed me by as I loved Series 1 & 2 - so binged watched last week.

So glad I did. I loved it. I watched it on my own, in bits at the end. A gift for Christmas Day.

I imagined a national “Noooooo “ when we saw Sonia in John Lewis!

LeHorla · 26/12/2024 09:41

Zoflorabore · 26/12/2024 02:15

I’m so glad the vast majority of people on the thread loved it, I thought it was amazing!

first laugh out loud moment for me was right at the beginning when Nessa said she had worked at the arcade for 47 years 😂 also thought it was so funny when Pam was planning her new life for when Mick died ( after a respectable grieving time of course ) and said she had been to view apartments!

when Neil the baby was singing the song I saw a look on Smithy’s face and I said to ds” he’s not going to marry her” and 2 minutes later all hell broke loose. This is when I started feeling really emotional and by the end I had tears streaming down my face. That really surprised me because I didn’t realise how emotionally invested I was. Gutted to not find out about the fishing trip. Any theories?

There was a lot of coasting on nostalgia, tying lose ends. etc., but overall enjoyable. Neither most characters or storylines of G&S are my jam particularly, but the writing consistently delivers a gem or two.
I do love Nessa. Yes, working for 47 years at the arcade! (and that was before she was a black cab, her lost year and working 'on the boats') And just remembered she was a lorry driver in the first series too. I adore this character. I think she'll endure as a legend of comedy (in my mind anyway😁), Ruth Jones is mesmerising playing her. I love that you have no idea of what will come out of her mouth, you know it's going to be 'different' but she always manages to surprise.
We must have a very similar sense of humour @Zoflorabore because I also loved Pam's 'second life', it was so funny!
To me there's still plenty of potential mileage in some of the most interesting characters if the writers could be bothered.

Fuelledbylatte · 26/12/2024 09:53

Absolutely perfect.

Nessa as a tuk tuk driver on the harmonica to start off was just brilliant.

I'll miss them all but it was a pleasure!

Like others have said, me and DH have a similar timeline and with our own dysfunctional Dads, both had a lot of love for Mick. Last night he was the icing on the cake.

Pete was so unexpectedly funny with his high tops, couldn't stop laughing.

Bryn in his Lycra and head-can was spot on too.

Can't wait to rewatch it!

The show has never been about Gavin & Stacey as the main protagonists.

Indeed - I can't work out if the people suggesting Gavin and Stacy is about Gavin and Stacey are having a laugh, or if they had too much of Jason's special liqueur.
