I'm in tears. Maybe I'm just emotional but can't believe how much the show means to me

And the ending... tidy!

I only watched 10 minutes before realising why I didn't watch a whole episode before!! Not for me but glad everyone loved it

I put it on for my parents who wanted to watch it but after 45 minutes I couldn't take any more and had to turn over. I've never liked the programme, I've never found it funny or interesting, and the special was just awful. I don't identify with any of the overdone characters, and really don't get why it's so popular.

I bet your parents love you. Grin

I absolutely loved it. It was perfect in every way. Can’t wait to rewatch it. Tidy.

(Although Dawn’s face was a bit off putting😂)

Corden and Jones have stated several times - even when the first series was airing - that’s it’s not a show about Gavin and Stacy, it’s a show about Gavin and Stacy’s loved ones.

My favourite fact is that it’s based on two of JC friends in real life who met at work over the phone - and as they didn’t think the show would be the hit it has been they don’t bother changing the names, so there is actually a real life Gavin and Stacy out there.

Have they? How strange, because in the first series Gavin and Stacey were very much the main characters.

LaPalmaLlama · 26/12/2024 08:30

I really liked it and laughed a lot but I’m not sure about the ending- I feel like they “gave people what they want” whereas I agree with pp that I don’t really see Smithy and Ness as a couple on an everyday basis. There were some great moments though and great observational humour.

MimiSunshine · 26/12/2024 08:37

I liked it.

it was straight from the Friends final episode playbook but it was good and enjoyable. Everyone was where they’re meant to be.

The writers of Friends said in the reunion that while they had so many roads for stories they could take M,C,R,R,J&P down for films, comeback series etc. it would have meant breaking up situations, relationships etc in order to make it interesting / entertaining and they just didn’t want to do that.

Gavin & Stacey is the same. Yes R&J could explore other stories with the characters but they’ve gone the Friends route so those characters all now live happily, probably chaotically ever after.

I loved the way that Nessa had kind of softened over time, both personality and make up, hair etc. She came across as more vunerable.
Really enjoyed it, blubbed and laughed all the way through.

Uncle Bryn with the tie round his head at Pam and Micks party. 😂😂😂

I noticed that too. I think being a mum changed her.

I think Dawn's face is true to what Dawn would actually look like. She's definitely be trying out botox/fillers etc so I thought it did fit her character. The actress who plays her looking pretty cracking for almost 60.

DH and I spent a good 10 minutes when we woke up this morning discussing whether Ness and Smithy would live in Barry or Essex. Then we remembered they're not real people 😆

We also decided they might do a special in about 10 years time just as a standalone story, but that like the Detectorists they probably shouldn't as they hit the pinnacle last night.

mycatsanutter · 26/12/2024 08:46

When they were shouting Gwen up the stairs I thought she had died , so relieved to find she was getting frisky with Dave instead!

Yeh it needs to be left well alone now. So many great sitcoms stop after a few series, Ricky Gervais never takes any of his shows past their best.

I thought it was absolutely brilliant. It really was the perfect ending.

Fratty · 26/12/2024 08:49

I hate saying it but I find Joanna Page's acting dreadful. Always have!

They'd definitely live in Essex because Neil the baby needs to be at college there and doing his apprenticeship with Smithy.

christmashelp24 · 26/12/2024 08:53

The show has never been about Gavin & Stacey as the main protagonists.

No. I guessed that one - the only mystery was who she was with. DH called it!

PrincessPeache · 26/12/2024 08:53

It bothered me that Neil the Baby wasn’t on the coach. His dad finally declaring his love for his mum and instead he stays behind??

Just what I said! But DH said Smithy would soon build up a business in Essex and there must be a college there too. Either way they'll be up and down between the two places really often I'm sure.

It was great!
good ending

I enjoyed it, but I think Rudi should have been in it more. She was a more prominent character previously. No one would call their baby Aldi - they could have thought of something funnier there.

Why were Stacey, Pam and Dawn invited to that hen party? Seemed daft and the stripper moment was a bit am dram.

I liked Dave's Coaches and thought that worked well.

The names were the places the children we’re conceived I assumed
Aldi was very funny

chosenone · 26/12/2024 08:54

I'm a huge fan and can't wait to watch I again today knowing no one dies!

The references to older jokes had to be there and they mostly worked. Gaviscon instead of Gavalar, the party, the KFC sexual tension, the interruption re the fishing trip were all great.

The stag do was awkward, but a dose of realism as everyone's too old now and life moves on. Same with the culture differences at the hen do. The Gavin and Stacey role play bit was a bit odd but a good way to show he loves her after all these years no matter what.

The ending was truly immense though, the standing up, Mick, the song and then the coach chase. The way she said no so he proposed! It was fab and I've loved it ❤️ thank you Ruth & James for brining us all so much joy!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/12/2024 08:54

I’m pretty sure I’m correct in saying the outfit Nessa was wearing when she left Barry for the docks was the same one she was wearing in Leicester Square on Ep 1.

Lookingtodate · 25/12/2024 23:32

Dave and Gwen???? Felt like they shoehorned him in. 5 years what's her face and smithy engaged did I miss the explanation for such a long engagement?

There wasn't one, but Covid?

Wow if that's true it's pretty cool. Mind you, I feel like Ness nearly always wore the same outfit!

christmashelp24 · 26/12/2024 08:58

She rewears her outfits a lot through all the series- in the ep last night there were a few repeats.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 26/12/2024 09:03

i think Gavin and Stacey with their role playing are morphing into Dawn and Pete, but without the Drama
