I'm in tears. Maybe I'm just emotional but can't believe how much the show means to me

And the ending... tidy!

I loved it, but felt like Blackbird was a really weird choice for a wedding song. I know it was about Nessa and Smithy "waiting for this moment to arrive" and their freedom to express their feelings etc, but for Smithy and Sonia's wedding it was a weird choice!

Maybe that's all he could play 😄

I enjoyed the whole thing. I liked that Gwen got a happy ending and Bryn seemed to be moving on too.

Re the ageing comment, it was a bit of a shock, mainly Larry Lamb, but then he is late 70s and I think always looked young for his age. And I liked how much Smithy looked to him for advice. Honestly, I can do without Dawn as don't think she's very well written.

I’m so glad the vast majority of people on the thread loved it, I thought it was amazing!

first laugh out loud moment for me was right at the beginning when Nessa said she had worked at the arcade for 47 years 😂 also thought it was so funny when Pam was planning her new life for when Mick died ( after a respectable grieving time of course ) and said she had been to view apartments!

when Neil the baby was singing the song I saw a look on Smithy’s face and I said to ds” he’s not going to marry her” and 2 minutes later all hell broke loose. This is when I started feeling really emotional and by the end I had tears streaming down my face. That really surprised me because I didn’t realise how emotionally invested I was. Gutted to not find out about the fishing trip. Any theories?

Those were some of my favourite lines too. I also liked Nessa telling Stacey that her and Gav were boring 😆😆😆 Stacey and Nessa's relationship is really a highlight of the show for me. No offence is ever taken.

Wintersgirl · 26/12/2024 10:08

I cracked up when the registrar called Neil "Neil, the baby"at the wedding, I don't imagine many teenage boys would be happy being called that! So funny...

LeHorla · 26/12/2024 10:17

Liked that too and the registrar was Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland) she is great. Liked her smirk when things started to go south...

PrincessPeache · 26/12/2024 08:53

It bothered me that Neil the Baby wasn’t on the coach. His dad finally declaring his love for his mum and instead he stays behind??

This could have been due to legalities. When anyone under 18 works on a film set there and numerous rules and regulations about how many hours etc the child can do. It would be much easier for everyone else if Neil The Baby wasn’t there for those scenes.

Aintnobodygottime · 26/12/2024 10:23

We also talked about where they’d live and said it was a sign of how much the characters have grown that we couldn‘t see it being a big issue for either to move. Smithy in Wales felt a bit more likely.

Smithy and Nessa are soul mates. And for a long time they hated that in themselves. That’s why they should be together. All the stuff about take aways etc is just a reflection of that and not all they have in common.

Last time I saw Julia Davis she was utterly unrecognisable so I’m glad the fillers had settled down!

My one niggle is why Mick wouldn’t have mentioned the stuff about struggling with a second when he was chatting to Gavin on the beach about his sperm count. But then I checked myself as it’s all about the drama, and I love it.

Yes, I did think that would be the explanation. Beyond the fact that they hadn’t thought of that bit 15 years ago!

My favourite moment was Mick's speech, it explained the relationship Smithy had with the family, it explained a lot that had never really been asked before, and made me love Pam and Mick more.

I cried. Mick is my absolute favourite.

I was a bit gutted it wasn't set at Christmas. I think I'd have finished it off with everyone at Pam and Mick's for Christmas. Nessa and Smithy would be there together but it's ambiguous whether they're together together or their version of together.

whynotwhatknot · 26/12/2024 10:51

love it but unpopular opinion ive never liked dawn shes absuive to alls pete names stalks him woulnt be funny if it it were a man

still cried at te end

happyseason · 26/12/2024 11:01

I didn’t particularly notice that anyone had aged. I thought Nessa looked better!

bendmeoverbackwards · 26/12/2024 11:02

Yes I was worried about that too.

When Gwen’s secret lover was revealed, I suggested to dd that it’s a woman and Gwen came out as a lesbian. Plot twist 😂

Els1e · 26/12/2024 11:06

I loved it! They were brilliant

echt · 26/12/2024 11:06

Just finished watching it in Melbourne. I have something in my eye.

I have never watched it before, but thought I would watch this one, basically because of all the hype. I enjoyed some bits, others not so much. The ending was lovely. I feel that I don't need to watch the rest of it at all now. This episode seems to have summed up the entire show.

Wait a few months then start from the beginning you'll love it

Yourinmyspot · 26/12/2024 11:39

I thought it started off a bit slowly and didn’t seem the same somehow. Then it got really good and I loved the references to the older series like the corn on the cob and big fat Sue. Thought Stacey with those glasses was really funny and typical Stacey. So glad Dave and Rudi were in it and the ending was perfect.

I’m glad we never found out what happened on the fishing trip. It’s better to leave it to our imagination. They could never have made everyone happy with what it would have been. Reminds me how they never showed Maris in Frasier much better left to the imagination.

Takeoutyourhen · 26/12/2024 11:46

I enjoyed it but it was a bit too long.
Where was Deano and remind me who was the friend with the long hair?
Dawn hasn’t changed in 5 years due to fillers etc., but I thought Larry Lamb was looking frail particularly in the final scene before the credits. Hats off to him!

Parkrunmum10 · 26/12/2024 09:36

See I disagree
the whole point of the series is the hum drum life people find joy in
she lived in Barry for a long time working the slots and her crazy side businesses- the idea of them getting married and being apart is odd but perhaps in a way very smithy and Nessa 🤷‍♀️

I think Nessa settled down to give Neil a stable life, but this is her time now. I can’t see Smithy and Nessa living a normal domestic life - so I think they will lead separate lives together.

imfae · 26/12/2024 12:12

I loved it and am glad that it ended on a happy note . I think they wrote what the fans wanted to happen and a real love story panning several decades .

You could see how Nessa and Smithy had both matured and they seemed to be great loving parents to "baby Neil ".

I think it was great that most of the strong supporting characters made an appearance as they were always integral to the story . As others have said the speech by Mick about Smithy's large role in their lives was really moving .
I was worried that having heard some interviews from James Corden and Ruth Jones that there would be a funeral / death . I did think that there may be an accident when they were on the bus driving to the port and there would be multiple deaths of the characters .

I am so glad this didn't happen as the series was never about dramatic tension but about the richly drawn characters and their at times mundane / day to day lives .

I wasn't sure about the relationship between Gwen and " Dave Coaches " but it was needed to bring him in for the drive to the airport . I suppose they could have brought in a new coach driver who had taken them to the wedding venue, but it wasn't about new characters but finding out what happened to the characters we knew and loved .

Loved the cameo though from Anna Maxwell Martin .

I don't think I twigged whilst watching that Sonia was Smithy's previous girlfriend ? I remember thinking that it was a very similar storyline with previous episodes and wondered why they had done that .Didn't realise it was the same character ....

Having read some more I see that the actress who played Sonia was kept secret, she stayed in a different hotel from the rest of the cast and she hadn't even told her family she was in it . All makes sense now Blush. In my defence , whilst I think I have watched all previous episodes I watched them out of sync sometimes . Great excuse to re watch in the right order .

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 26/12/2024 12:34

I've never watched it so just started in series 1 episode 1 this morning, I'm loving it!

OrangeSlices998 · 25/12/2024 23:41

Really felt like the Dave & Gwen thing was only so they could all drive to the docks!

Dawn and Pete was not enjoyable it didn’t feel like they got a nice ending, Pete seemed miserable and resigned. Her new face was not enjoyable to watch!

I laughed at some bits, it was a nice ending. I like that they ended it because they ran out of stories to tell I guess?

Dave was in it because they wanted to get as many of the original cast in the final episode as possible. Good to see Chinese Alan etc as well as Rudi and Smithy’s Mum in it. Shame Owain Hughes was missing but at least he got a mention.

I remember from Gavins stag night they had a friend nick named Jesus, could've been him, I going to have to watch the whole thing again now just to check. What a shame!

SindySnowflake · 26/12/2024 12:42

Loved it. Actually cried with laughter at Dawn and Chinese Alan 😂😂
