I know there is a thread for this but I started to read and all talking about the book and plot so I stopped reading - I think that one may be for bingers as all will be shown on iPlayer (which drives me nuts) 😡

So this as usual will be tv paced

4 episodes. Mon and Tue this week and then 23 and 24th next week so all wrapped up by Christmas 💖

New book THE INK BLACK HEART

Robin and Corrmoran are back

This time the pair delve into the case of the cartoon creator Eddie Ledwell.

She tells Robin she is being persecuted by an anon online figure spreading hate and is found dead in a cemetery ,,,,,,,,,,

The books are cracking but the TV series insists on turning 900+ page doorstoppers with multiple overarching subplots into as few eps as they can get away with. Earlier books only had two episodes! 🤯

Do you think 6 episodes rather than 4 for this one, or maybe 5? I've never dramatised a novel for the screen so how would I know:)
It's a shame to pare them down too much if they would be better in more episodes. There is only ever going to be this time to dramatise them with these actors.
I notice they left out the child of Nils. I can't say that's a big disappointment.
Yesterday I read the last few paragraphs of the book. That was a pleasure.

Also think Ink Black Heart was a confusing book, which led to a confusing adaptation - was my least favourite and I wasn't sure if I would read any more.

I'm glad I did as The running grave was a return to form IMO.

Melroses · 26/12/2024 12:09

I did enjoy it but agree that another episode (or two) would have given a bit of breathing time and a bit more space understand some of who the characters were. There was a lot cut out, so people reading the book afterwards are in for a treat.

Love Midge, Barclay and Pat too - she is an absolute star.

The book had a lot of on-line time which was understandably cut. The way things work online has changed massively between this being written, published and then filmed and shown. The accessibility of information from social media is tighter, and I remember that time as being a bit of a frenzy with Tumblr, chatrooms for everything etc new accounts and sites being set up and massive oversharing going on with the inevitable blow-ups (as well as the darker side). It is amazing how much more media savvy society has become in a short time.

@BakeOffRewatch thanks for the explanation but I didn't get any of that from watching it - too many characters and what seemed like an underwhelming ending.

I don't know if it would have helped if I'd read the book but at over 1000 pages there's no way I'd read anything that long.

BakeOffRewatch · 26/12/2024 13:07

I hadn’t read any of the books or watched the other series so what I’ve written is what I got from the show. It is difficult because none of it is actually said by Gus, it’s said by other characters about Anomie and Paperwhite so it is hard to pull it together. There were 3 conversations between strike and Robin that I rewound to watch twice, where a lot of info was mentioned only once, once when she was moving and another time after he was looking at all those profiles and mentions online.

I think they did a good job making enjoyable tv with the first two episodes.

@Melroses such a good point about how internet use by society has vastly changed in just a few years. I think things like mumfluencers blowing up had a big part in that, but it looked like it happened in a few spheres like tween make up as well. Is Zoella still a thing? It’s probably more to do with the first social media children growing up and deciding to do things completely differently to their parents who would have been first Facebook users too - so a change in demographic rather than change of behaviour in same people.

sweetydahling · 26/12/2024 13:21

Yes, not sure I'd agree social media has moved on. Fandoms are as wild as ever.

IBH was always going to be the hardest book to adapt due to the online nature of it, but another episode or two would have allowed the story to breathe and the suspects to have more than one scene.

Melroses · 26/12/2024 14:11

The Fandoms are definitely still wild. Maybe it is part of their nature.

This is such a helpful thread. I am watching this via a VPN in another time zone and I cannot get subtitles no matter what I try, so I am missing a lot of the dialogue.

I put up recaps each episode so they should help

Thank you.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/12/2024 20:46

I need a recap as sometimes miss stuff

@BakeOffRewatch did a fab one herself

Mine are off the internet 😂

Just finished it and have to agree, it needed at least one if not two more episodes to do the plot justice. Gus was basically in one scene for the whole series before he went psycho in the last 10 mins of the final episode. The plotting of the earlier episodes certainly made me think this was going to be a six-parter, I was quite surprised in ep 4 when they started rushing through the plot to get to the end.

The cast excellent as always, although the actor playing Charlotte didn't come off as quite enough of an ice cold bitch.

I agree about Charlotte, except the moment when she is utterly confused about why she might go for sole custody and Strike's reaction was perfect.

daffodilandtulip · 27/12/2024 10:20

Agree with everyone, too many characters and very confusing.

Basically watched for Strike and Robyn 😂

tribpot · 27/12/2024 10:23

Agreed, @KatieKat88 that's when we finally saw the Charlotte we know and hate. She truly is the worst.
