I know there is a thread for this but I started to read and all talking about the book and plot so I stopped reading - I think that one may be for bingers as all will be shown on iPlayer (which drives me nuts) 😡

So this as usual will be tv paced

4 episodes. Mon and Tue this week and then 23 and 24th next week so all wrapped up by Christmas 💖

New book THE INK BLACK HEART

Robin and Corrmoran are back

This time the pair delve into the case of the cartoon creator Eddie Ledwell.

She tells Robin she is being persecuted by an anon online figure spreading hate and is found dead in a cemetery ,,,,,,,,,,

Oh no, Strikes stabbed

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/12/2024 00:17

Phone calls and fc meant I've only just watched the ending

Wow

Gus

Didn't expect that

Not 100% why - jealous of the time his mum spent with Josh and edie ?

And anomie was paperwhite who was gus

Jago is horrible yet Charlotte wants joint custody with him - why ? So she gets a break off twins ?

Strike needs to tell Robin he loves her

I assume eventually they get together

Wasn't sure why Jasmin pretends to be him online

But all in all very enjoyable

Ok I did enjoy watching the series, but too much of the murder plot was between Strike and Robin talking rather than seeing the murder plot characters do stuff or getting to know them. I was hoping for a couple of minutes explanation at the end! A lot of the characters were a segue , a trivial connection to the next character. Like Fiendy was Uncle Grant’s daughter from first marriage, who pretended to be a guy online and was a mod on Drek’s game so she received a Paperwhite nude that she sent to Robin .. which led to Nicole the artist which led to her boyfriend Marcus the actor which led to his sister Darcy the musician at RGM.

Gus hates women, anyone who ever hurt his feelings he wants to destroy. He destroyed Darcy Bernard on the /CriminalBitches for inviting him to a party because she felt sorry for him and then having the audacity to have a boyfriend. He destroyed Kea Niven because she laid claim to Ink Black Heart. Killed Edie because of the film deal. Killed Vikas because as co-creator of the Drek’s Game Morehouse he was talking to Paperwhite (actually Anomie AKA Gus) and said he’d speak to police.

Yasmin pretends to be Anomie online, because Gus/Anomie asked her to - it provides an alibi for Anomie during the murders.

Flavia, Gus’s sister, saw him swap Josh’s letter (written by Katya but handwriting of the letter kept by Uncle Grant didn’t match a list she wrote for Strike and Robin) for the one he wrote. So she was the one on the phone saying look in coffin.

Charlotte is a terrible person who wouldn’t care to protect her children from an abuser. That’s the point being made. She just plays games and wants what she wants, doesn’t ever consider others. The look of confusion on her face when Strike asked her…

SnowFrogJelly · 25/12/2024 01:19

Didn't enjoy this series.. plot way too confusing

BakeOffRewatch · 25/12/2024 01:20

It just went 0 to 100 with Gus being an utter psychopath stabbing his own parents, prepared to kill his sister and demanding Robin take her clothes off or he’ll cut off his mum and sister’s head. What on earth.

deeahgwitch · 25/12/2024 08:23

Thank you for the recap @BakeOffRewatch.
I found it hard to follow, it was my least favourite Strike.
But love Robin and Strike so continued to watch.
Ruth Sheen who plays Pat is great. ⭐️

RaraRachael · 25/12/2024 09:26

Very confusing and pointless plot. I can't even remember who half the characters are! At the end I was thinking "Whaf was that all about". None of my family or friends enjoyed it either.
Agree that Strike, Robyn and Pat are great though.

BakeOffRewatch · 25/12/2024 11:27

That’s how I felt @RaraRachael , “pointless plot” was a good way to put it! What was the point in getting to know Wally, Pez, Nils, all that screen time with them and then they’re just bylines in the last episode. Then all those characters in the last two episodes who were fundamental to tracing the killer but we barely got enough time to remember their names, let alone anything else. You could have known what was going on with 3 scenes of talking between Strike and Robin.

RaraRachael · 25/12/2024 12:24

I think Strike is getting a bit King's New Clothes - it's not great but people don't want to criticise because it's written by JKR .

The books spent a lot more time with those characters. It’s a shame they have to condense the story line, it’s a pretty hefty book iirc.

The one after TIBH, The Running Grave, was much better IMHO. Looking forward to seeing the adaptation of it eventually.

RaraRachael · 25/12/2024 13:07

I just couldn't on with the books. Got them from FiL who raved about how well written they were but I just don't have the concentration for that length of book.
Read first HP and that ws enough.

Good to hear. I read 'IBH'. A friend wondered how on earth they were going to dramatize it.
They are long books, and complicated, this one the most, I think.
I am about to embark on T R Grave.

Whatever happened to Shanker? He just doesn't seem to be needed these days! I like Midge and Barclay and Pat. I hope they can keep the actors/actresses for the next time.

sweetydahling · 25/12/2024 18:18

The books are cracking but the TV series insists on turning 900+ page doorstoppers with multiple overarching subplots into as few eps as they can get away with. Earlier books only had two episodes! 🤯

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/12/2024 20:32

Great recap @BakeOffRewatch - but why did Gus do it and kill his dad and attempt to kill mum and sister

Jealous ?

OP posts:
BakeOffRewatch · 25/12/2024 21:17

Gus was the co-creator of Drek’s Game and felt he had ownership of the source material - some of the stuff Yasmin said in the interview with Robin, about how fans know it better than the people who make it. Gus wasn’t happy about the imminent film deal signing that would include games rights. He also just downright hated women so Edie just existing was enough, add on encroaching on ”his” game. So that’s why he did the main crime, going for Edie and Josh the day before signing the film deal.

He’s an abusive misogynistic psychopath, with no self esteem only rage, so when Inigo confronted him about RGM saying Gus hasn’t been studying for a year, Gus flipped and killed him. Hates women so went for his mum and sister - is it called family annihilation?

I haven’t read any of the books, above is what I made of the tv show. I don’t think there is a clear cut why.

merry Christmas @Blondeshavemorefun

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/12/2024 23:03

I thought he Josh was the co owner not gus

OP posts:
BakeOffRewatch · 25/12/2024 23:11

Edie and Josh co-created Ink Black Heart cartoon YouTube videos

Anomie AKA Gus and Morehouse AKA Vikas were mega fans of Ink Black Heart who co-created Drek’s Game, the glorified chat room.

postop · 25/12/2024 23:24

This is such a helpful thread. I am watching this via a VPN in another time zone and I cannot get subtitles no matter what I try, so I am missing a lot of the dialogue.

KatieKat88 · 26/12/2024 07:53

I agree that a lot is missing from the book - I can understand why but it does impact how it's shown on screen. A lot of the info we find out about in the book is from moderator private chats on the game and it wouldn't translate well (it's difficult enough to follow in the book to be fair!). I still enjoyed it though. Really looking forward to The Running Grave - that had me very stressed reading it so I can only imagine how stressful it will be to watch! I couldn't put it down though.

Samcro · 26/12/2024 07:55

i enjoyed it, but got very lost in the last episode.way to many characters to remember.

Clawdy · 26/12/2024 09:20

Samcro that is exactly what I thought. So confusing.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 26/12/2024 09:28

I’m a big fan of the Strike novels, but the IBH just had to be got out the way to be honest. I was confused watching it, and I’ve read it!

Agree the Running Grave is going to be stressful.

paranoidnamechanger · 26/12/2024 09:31

I don’t think JKR was in the right place when she wrote the book, maybe immersed and stressed with the online trolling she was receiving during the Covid period. TRG was better, but like most of her books, way too long.
