This case always makes me so sad. It feels like that poor girl will never get justice. If only the police had went completely by the book.
The ransom note was illogical, and yet the six certified handwriting experts couldn't definitively say the mother wrote it.
The pineapple means it was highly unlikely she was carried straight to bed and attacked from there, but only her fingerprints were found on the bowl.
The location where she was found makes no sense from a kidnapping perspective, and indicates the person knew the layout of the house.
It seems very likely the killer was someone JonBenet knew and trusted, and that they've gotten away with it is just awful.

Strongly recommend this episode of Crime Junkies for a brief (3 hour!) round up of whole story.

It wasn’t Burke.

I had no idea they have DNA now and have eliminated 200 close family members and friends.

milveycrohn · 25/11/2024 20:22

I have not yet watched the documentary (did not know it was on). However, I always assumed it was the brother (who was quite young at the time), and the parents then covered it up, for the sake of the boy.
I think Jon Bonet was in the habit of getting into his bed, and then possibly wet the bed, etc.
However, maybe I'll learn something new when I watch the documentary.
The entire case is very tragic.

Thepossibility · 25/11/2024 20:29

I think her father was a part of a pedo ring and offered her up for something like a private photography session that went wrong. Some of the police could've been involved in the ring in some way and that's why the investigation was outrageously botched. Her photographer that took glamour shots of her was later charged with child pornography. That's why the father made the mother write the note and all that. I think he was the boss of the family and they all just did what they were told.

XelaM · 25/11/2024 19:06

I don't understand how it can possibly be anyone except the brother and the parents covered it up. That ransom note was 100% written by the mother and why would the mother cover up the murder of her daughter unless to protect her other child. There just is no other explanation that makes any sense.

Except there was DNA that didn't match any of the family, on her underwear and under her finger nails. Which the police etc conveniently didn't mention the results of for a long time because it didn't support their theory.

Pineapple. Yes was undigested despite the family saying jonbenet had fallen asleep while travelling home and was carried to bed asleep. Although there was a bowl of pineapple out in the kitchen.

It was pineapple and milk ( or maybe single cream) that the brother had as a late night snack , I remember there was something about 2 spoons which would suggest she came along and helped herself ( spoon was a tablespoon which isn;t what the parents would've given her )

They had an Open House party for neighbours so perfectly feasible someone could get in and hide

custardpyjamas · 25/11/2024 20:41

I think the ransom amount being similar to her father's bonus makes it look like a jealous person who worked with him and knew about the bonus, so knew he was good for that amount. If the perpetrator got in and out through the basement window he may have taken her to the basement intending to take her out that way, but things got out of hand and she died.

Pootle40 · 25/11/2024 20:43

I am going to assume with John Ramsey's involvement that a lot of evidence will be left out and spun a certain way.

The woman on the Horaldo show going on about the saxophone was bonkers!

Wasn't she? I hope she is seen for the fraud she is. Imagine suggesting you are an expert in the field and then saying that nonsense

Fleamaker · 25/11/2024 20:51

The kidnapper/murderer wrote the 3 page ransom note in the kitchen, using pen and paper belonging to the mother. Pen and paper put back in original place. There was a practice note that was never found.

westisbest1982 · 25/11/2024 20:52

Repeated child abuser Gary Oliva has confessed to the murder and his handwriting is similar to that of the writing in the note. I haven’t watched the TV series yet so I don’t know if this has been covered?

trace dna when there is no other evidence isn’t really compelling. They were brand new underwear. It could have been trace dna from the manufacturing process. The other things that point to no intruder - like no evidence of break in and no foot prints ect are far more compelling.

seaelephant · 25/11/2024 20:53

I can't bear to watch it, but any parents who are capable of dressing up and pimping out a little girl like that are seriously fucked in the head and capable of who knows what

downwindofyou · 25/11/2024 20:56

@XelaM
You should watch the series. A lot of debunking of earlier reports. Police who were active on the case now admitting to lies and agendas the police chefs had to pin it on the family. A lot of police feeding false information to the press and burying evidence that didn't fit their rhetoric.

Best to watch it before sounding quite so convinced.

Pootle40 · 25/11/2024 20:58

What kidnapper leaves the body wrapped lovingly with their blanket ! The knot he describes as tight was described as a loose slip knot by others. Why did he move her body when rigour mortis had set in? The practice ransom note. Patsy's cold language 'that child'. The fact they wouldn't be interviewed by the police ?! Surely if you were really concerned who had done this you would do everything to co-operate. The list could go on and on.....

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 25/11/2024 20:59

It makes no sense for it to be the family.

Why would they kill her, hide her body in the house, fake a ransom note to say she'd been kidnapped, then call the police straight away? The very least you'd expect is that the police would come in, secure the scene and search the house immediately, completely blowing apart their kidnap lie. Surely it would have made more sense to kill her, remove her from the house, then call the police the next morning as though everyone had woken up at a normal time.

I know the police didn't search the house straight away because they were fucking useless, but the Ramsey's had no way of knowing that the police weren't going to follow procedure.

That's a whole lot of guessing at random stuff you've got going on there.

Because at that point the police were pinning it on the father and the Ramsay's felt they could not trust the police. They were advised to get lawyers and the lawyers told them not to speak

This is America remember. Where police are not always looking for the truth.

On your first point, it is not at all uncommon for certain types of killers to feel "remorse" afterwards and cover a body. In fact, in this case, the way the poor girl had been wrapped up specifically suggested this was not done by a family member.
In the same way, had her father been the killer, leading behavioural profilers have already said it would have been far more likely that he would have allowed someone else to discover her rather than deliberately "find" her himself.
Lots of things that don't make sense or point to one clear cut answer once you dig into it.

If there had been an accident / fit of rage. Medical examiners who have reviewed said she was essential dead/dying from the blow to the head. If you phone for help you are likely going to prison with no access to your other child ....your life is over. So perhaps you decide to try and cover it up and retain whatever is left of your family.

This is a classic Occam's razor case for me.

KitsyWitsy · 25/11/2024 21:09

I watched this today. It’s very pro Ramsey and biased towards exonerating them.

I always leaned towards Burke did it with a parental cover up.

TurtlesDoNotPetsMake · 25/11/2024 21:12

After watching many documentaries and podcasts, I'm convinced it was not the family. There was a great video on YouTube from the behavior panel and Burke showed no signs of deception.

leave this poor child alone its been 30 years
