What should new joiners know about Telly Addicts?

Hi, I work in the Mumsnet digital & research team. We’re exploring whether a short Topic Guide could help people who are new to Telly Addicts understand how this part of Mumsnet works and find their feet.

What should the guide cover? We’d love to hear about the tone, spoiler etiquette, programme and live-viewing threads, common terms, traditions, in-jokes, or anything else a newcomer might find helpful.

Reply to this thread and tell us what makes Telly Addicts work for you. Your thoughts will help inform the guide.

I think this is a section of MN that needs no explanation

maudelovesharold · 16/07/2026 22:37

@Eleanoratmumsnet For goodness sake, MN, this really isn’t needed. Stop trying to curate everything, just let it be!

onmylastnerveseriously · 16/07/2026 22:46

I think mumsnet needs to go away and consider why they believe a group of largely perimenopausal, middle class, educated women with read write access to the internet cannot grasp the concept of what a Telly Addicts forum might discuss.

Have to agree with the 1st 3 posts

This post (similar version) has now appeared on various boards, such as Royal Family and Elderly Parents. Any others? It disappeared from Royal Family before I even had a chance to post on it.

Um, it’s about stuff on the telly?

NanaGary · 21/07/2026 09:18

In relation to "stuff on the telly" - check out "Beyond Screen Time Guilt" online.

OwlCalledSage · 21/07/2026 09:24

Do you really think someone who notices a TV chat in active conversations is actually going to read a guide to the topic before posting? Because, that’s extremely unlikely.

NanaGary · 21/07/2026 12:38

It's not a "guide to the topic", as a quick search would have told you.

TheMarriageOfAirAndFrock · 21/07/2026 12:45

I’d rather you took a deep dive into Style & Beauty.

Who cares what you wear, no one’s looking at you.

That would only look good on a 5’10, size 8, 20 year old.

That’s so ugly - it’s only meant for someone over 60!

The board is becoming increasingly pointless.

I don’t see any difficulty with Telly Addicts? Posters can generally sort out for themselves whether it should be a spoiler-free thread, or not.

What’s the difference between Topic Guide (in the op) and guide to the topic?

The link I provided yesterday is to a book that challenges the research behind "screen time rules" and proposes a different - and more positive - way of thinking about 0-3-year-olds' relationships with TV and video. I thought it might appeal to telly addicts.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/07/2026 14:16

Doesn't the AI come up with something flattering enough?

Ump · 21/07/2026 14:20

Surely it would be much more helpful to have a general guide that is easily available for people that are new to MN?

Explain (for example) that using the "add post" button merely plonks your reply at the end of the thread (which may already be hundreds of posts long)

Explain how to see all of OPs posts at a glance.

Explain that if there are 100s of posts then the situation may have evolved from the OP that you have just read.

Explain how to quickly see that OP has only made one post and disappeared from the thread.

Maybe that belongs in the Books topic?

Not this shit again, this “request” managed to seriously piss off not only the royal board but the elderly parents board as well.
