There is zero evidence of an intruder. Dirt and debris around the supposed entry point was undisturbed, even cobwebs. The dna is touch dna only and tiny amounts which arent indicative of it being the perpetrator(s). Red fibres consistent with the red sweater Patsy was wearing the previous night were found on the inside of the tape which was on JonBenets mouth, and in the knot tied around the paintbrush handle. Everything used in the crime came from inside the house. The note was very clearly written by patsy, something which would only be done if someone in the family was involved. The Ramseys refused to speak with police for months, choosing instead to do televised interviews. There was evidence of previous sexual abuse.

Unfortunately when children are abused and/or killed it's far more likely that it was someone within their family than a stranger. I dont know why people refuse to accept the likely explanation in this case.

Amen. It does get exhausting explaining this stuff over and over again. Nevermind even knowing there was a window below this grate. The amount of time this so called intruder had to have been in the house between 20 minutes writing a ransom note, taking her out of her bed and downstairs, waiting at least 45 minutes after hitting her on the head to kill her with the strangulation. Loosely binding the hands of an unconscious or dead child - why? Arriving with none of the materials you need. Moving around a large sprawling house without making a sound or leaving your dna. None of your fingerprints on the notepad.

The dirt and debris did show signs of disturbance.

Patsy lived in the house. They were Patsy’s belongings.

The note was not very clearly written by Patsy - handwriting experts could not say she’d written it.

The Ramsays did speak to police until they were under suspicion and sought legal advice.

There is no evidence of prior sexual abuse. Just evidence from the night she died.

We are all covered in trace DNA from white men. They make up about 35% of the population.

No, we are not. We are not covered in unknown men’s trace DNA.

There is no explanation for trace male stranger’s DNA being found on her underwear which has ever stacked up.

We shed around 400,000 skin cells per day. We shed DNA, cough DNA and flush away DNA constantly. Police need fewer than ten of these cells to analyse them as trace DNA.

fatphalange · 03/12/2024 19:47

I thought it had been confirmed ages ago that the mystery DNA was from when the knickers were packed in the factory?

XelaM · 03/12/2024 19:48

O6bftdff · 03/12/2024 18:16

Good one. No one who suspects the family ever has answers to the questions which make their involvement ridiculous.

Answers to what?! Parents do abuse and kill their children behind closed doors as do siblings. Just because this was a wealthy middle class couple doesn't make it any less likely. They were absolutely obsessed with their image and would definitely have covered up a murder by a member of the immediate family and would never admit it was them. The traces of DNA were absolutely minuscule and not at all conclusive of any stranger being there - it could have been from a shop worker as it was new underwear. She may very well have been an abused child by either the father or the brother and the mother covered it up to save face. The intruder story is so improbable that it is beyond the realms of possibility given the timeline, the "ransom" note, the size of the house and the location of the body. John Ramsey has spent a lot of money covering up his daughter's murder so of course the spin given in the Netflix series makes people suddenly ignore the obvious explanation that she was killed by one of the family.

XelaM · 03/12/2024 19:50

Also their friends who were in the house that night all turned on them and tried to get the police and DA's office to actually do their jobs because it was so obviously a cover up.

SmashedBaubles · 03/12/2024 20:14

I watched the Netflix documentary on this the other day and hadn’t realised the full extent of the horror of what was done to that little girl - the SA with the paintbrush and that someone took the time to actually make a garotte using the end of the paintbrush. I mean why, she was tiny and could hardly fight back! This happened days after my oldest DD was born and I remember it being in the news but don’t remember those details coming out at the time.

Absolutely mind boggling that every inch of that house was not immediately searched when the police arrived in case the ‘kidnapper’ left some evidence. Why would you leave a 9 year old alone upstairs when the kidnapper could still be in the house? The house was large - 6000 square feet. Plenty of places to hide.

Why were Patsy and John’s fingerprints not on the ransom note? First thing you’d do is pick it up to read it? No kidnapper would write a long letter like that while in an occupied house with the risk of being disturbed at any moment.

From what I’ve read now, the theory that she was whacked on the head with something like a golf club (v shape injury) in the basement, where there were apparently fresh urine stains on the carpet (which may have happened when she was knocked out as she lost control of her bladder), and it was thought she was dead initially and it then needed to be covered up to look like an intruder is most likely. Could explain why her genital area was wiped down to wipe off the urine as she wet herself. If she had being previously sexually abused, that would need to be covered up as well hence the staging of the sexual assault and injury to cover up old ones with the paintbrush.

Absolutely the most evil thing I’ve ever heard of. Makes me want to scream at the thought of it even 28 years later!

They were supposed to get on a flight at 7.30am that morning and wouldn’t be able to explain why JonBenet wasn’t with them so had to think fast I guess.

Patsy was definitely up all night. A woman who was all about appearances wouldn’t have not had a shower and put yesterday’s clothes on knowing she had to leave to go on a flight to stay with her husband’s family in a few hours.

Don’t know how you could live with doing that to your own young child rather than ring an ambulance to try to save her after the head injury and take whatever consequences arose from that, a child perpetrator wouldn’t be going to jail although you may lose some social standing if your son killed his sister I suppose, unless you knew that something else would be uncovered which would totally destroy you which could be that ongoing SA would be uncovered IMO.

Weren’t the brother’s toys that he wanted to play with in the basement? Weren’t the Dad’s golf clubs also in a golf bag in the basement and didn’t he ask someone to get them and take them out of the house despite it being winter and his daughter just having been murdered? Did JonBenet go the basement and touch her brother’s toys? Her brother had already hit her with a golf club before. Patsy lied about her being already asleep when they got home that night. Burke was awake too and apparently ‘slept’ through all the chaos after the ‘kidnapping’ being discovered.

There was the issue with the unusual activity with the lights in the house that night and the phone records being wiped as well. The unknown DNA could have been from someone they called in a panic to come over and help them figure out what to do. He could have touched the body or posed her? Was every male in close contact with the family ever DNA tested - friends, lawyers, business partners etc?

One other thing that stuck with me was that Patsy said she got up and went straight downstairs in the morning, after putting dirty clothes on and redoing her makeup, to put coffee on. JonBenet’s room was very close to the parent’s room. I would never go downstairs after getting up in the morning without looking in on my DC, especially so young. Just popping head round the door to check on them. Just sounded odd but she couldn’t say she’d checked on the kids before she went down could she!

They obviously never took safety of their kids seriously anyway because wasn’t the basement window smashed for months and never fixed? That must have had an effect on their heating bill in the winter in such a big house? Would have been cheaper to get someone just to put a new pane of glass in surely.

I think John wants to give it one last shot to clear the family name and Burke of any involvement before he dies. I feel very sorry for Burke actually as even if he was involved in the head injury, he was a child, it was his parents responsibility to protect and him himself if he had behavioural issues, and he certainly does not have any responsibility for what happened afterwards which has probably totally ruined his life more than if he had caused the head injury on it’s own.

Oh, wasn’t the cord used in the garotte taken from a toy plane hanging in the house and wasn’t a page found in Patsy’s notepad addressed to Mr and Mrs Ramsey believed to have been the start of a practice of the ransom note, and in an interview she mistakenly said that was how the note was addressed?

How the fuck they got away with this I don’t know. They were indicted though for causing the death/abuse of a child weren’t they but strangely that was not acted on?

Firealarm1414 · 03/12/2024 20:23

There is no evidence of prior sexual abuse. Just evidence from the night she died.

This just isnt true. The doctor who performed the autopsy noted signs of prior sexual abuse, in the form of healed abrasions amongst other things, which he then had verified by a pediatrician colleague who he asked to come to the morgue. At a later review, a panel of 4 additional doctors who were experts in CSA agreed that there were signs of prior sexual abuse based on the autopsy findings. Of course, the ramseys always quote the two doctors they could find who say the evidence is inconclusive.

XelaM · 03/12/2024 20:34

It's odd to me how people on Mumsnet are convinced the Menendez brothers (who were adults at the time) were sexually abused by their father in the most outrageous way, but do not believe that a tiny six year pageant girl whose parents made her wear make up and bleach her hair could have been the victim of SA at the hands of her immediate family.

Odd an apparent sexual deviant child killing sicko took the time to sexually abuse a child in her own home while her family was in the house with the risk of being disturbed at any moment, so desperate to satisfy his sexual gratification that he couldn’t even wait until he’d actually kidnapped her and got her out of the house but no semen found on JonBenet, her clothes, the blanket he wrapped her lovingly in or the surrounding areas.

queenofarles · 03/12/2024 21:38

There was a lot of movement going on that night at least by three individuals , there is no way that much movement accrued in quiet house while two grownups slept upstairs , any parent would have jumped and investigated any slight movement. , it could be that someone familiar was with kids in the kitchen making them snacks. While both parents or one of them is aware of what’s going down stairs , nothing out of the norm ,small kids too excited to sleep are well just being kids.

Patsy says there is no way she’d use the dinner spoon for the pineapples it’s not something she’d do, but I think that’s something we all did when we are trying to put our DCs to bed late at night and are extremely tired and suddenly they say we are hungry we want some strawberries or whatever , I certainly wouldn’t bother what cutlery I serve the strawberries with as long as they eat them and go to bed.

SmashedBaubles · 04/12/2024 00:17

Also what was the MOTIVE if we are to believe this was an unknown assailant?

First it was a kidnapping for money, then for some unknown reason the kidnapper decided to sexually abuse and murder the child, inflicting TWO fatal attacks up to 2 hours apart, before the ransom note was even found so they obviously didn’t really want the money?

There was between 45 mins and 2 hours between the head injury and the strangulation IIRC so this person stayed in the house for up to an hour minimum practicing writing ransom notes, having already mortally wounded JonBenet (the head injury). Did the ‘kidnapper’ not think her body would be found in the basement before the ransom was paid out?

Shocking that anyone actually buys their story. They really didn’t think it out very well either. If it was supposed to be a kidnapping gone wrong, why the sexual injuries? Only possible reason could be is to cover up for when JonBenet’s body was checked for sexual injuries (which she would have been as a murder victim) and evidence of historic sexual abuse would be seen.
