I don’t usually watch this program on channel four but put it on by accident and have just watched the second part on More four on demand .I just have some thoughts on it and if any one has watched it please discuss with me here especially if you have watched both. It is the one about the murder of Eliza.

Very sad and desperate situation. Depressing viewing.

That neighbour, the old guy, sitting by the window, creeped me out. Why did he get so much coverage.

Allnewtometoo · 12/09/2024 09:52

I watched most of thus last night, having previously lived in and around wisbech for 20 plus years. It's depressing viewing which painted Wisbech in the worst possible light. I dont go there at sll often these days, and I know it has changed but was shocked by this program.

There are some lovely parts of wisbech, and a lot of history. Not relevant to this program at all I know but even the "filler" shots of the local area were grim.

I saw it & found it thoroughly depressing. So many sad lives.

They were sad lives, that is a good way to describe them. I was horrified at the end when the deaths were announced of Eliza’s mum and other participants. I had assumed they were all at least ten or fifteen years older than they were. It was sobering to be reminded how poverty, and addiction take their toll.

It was a really sad episode for lots of reasons. I think the relative was under 18 and that's why his face wasn't shown and he wasn't named. I thought it was sad that Coleman's children had a very low bar for what makes a good dad. He might have been nice enough but he was a drug addicted thief who I doubt ever provided for his children. I wondered what Eliza was doing with all the money she was making from the drug dealing, and why the police hadn't previously done something to stop her, because everyone in Wisbech seemed to know she was a drug dealer. Wisbech used to be a nice place.

I think it was made very clear that Coleman’s problems started when he had an accident at work, he was a roofer, had horrendous injuries and ended up addicted to opiate based painkillers which are as addictive as heroin. It doesn’t excuse his actions for a second, but I think it is unfair to infer that he was addicted to recreational drugs.

I used to think “pain killer addiction” was a euphemism used to excuse recreational drug use, but after watching programmes like Dope Sick I have more sympathy for people whose medical history has caused addiction.

coastingcoffee · 12/09/2024 10:22

If there is one show our politicians should be watching to see the true state of the country it is this.

Many episodes have had similar situations where many lives are ruined by drugs, violence, neglect. It's like these people are forgotten about and left to sink themselves and others into deeper despair. This is, until something like this happens and for a brief moment the spotlight reveals the horrors of their every day existences. There are too many people for whom this is normal life.

Who is ultimately responsible for so many wasted lives?

FrenchandSaunders · 12/09/2024 10:30

@viques it wasn't Coleman that had the accident.

The police seemed to be inept flitting from suspect to suspect and arresting those 2 and him dying in prison

I didn't feel that. I thought the programme illustrated how incredibly difficult it must be to police communities like this.

The sense of chaos, despair, unpredictability and desperation applied to everyone involved - the victim, her family, the witnesses, everyone...There was no reliable information from anyone until that final dna match so they had to investigate every possibility. The "word on the street" was pointing in one direction so they had to follow that direction but the evidence wasn't there. Because he wasn't guilty!
There wasn't anything to suggest the actual perpetrator was connected, until the knife was found.

I thought it showed how the police just had to keep going, trying to find and follow the evidence. Arresting possible suspects is part of that process. It's only when they've got evidence they can charge anyone.

If I remember correctly the man who died in prison was arrested for other offences so wasn't in prison because of the murder.

I agree with this. The police followed the evidence at every juncture. It might have looked random to outsiders. With the exception of everyone in the entire town knowing that Eliza was a dealer except the Police, I think they did a good job.

What a dump Wisbech is though.

Sorry, didn’t check the names. Jamie ( ?) it was hard to keep track of them all!

BadgersGalore · 12/09/2024 11:09

So many of you commenting sound like you weren't watching the program properly! Mark Coleman didn't break his back and it didn't say his sister died. The relative (obviously the victim's son although the program didn't state that) wasn't named or shown because he wasn't charged, not because of his age. They never show people who haven't been charged/ found guilty, unless the people have agreed to being shown.

Yes I found his involvement odd. Obviously he knew the deceased but why did he get so much airtime. It didn't move anything forward.

I was about to say "but Wisbech isn't a dump!" But tbf I haven't done anything other than drive round, or go to the cricket club, for years . I do know it's changed a lot in recent years. I might have to visit.

It has got some lovely buildings....

It certainly wasn’t a very good advert for Wisbech.

For that part of Wisbech it was a glowing report.

Wisbech does have a few nice bits. It was once a beautiful and prosperous town. But it's the centre of low pay, low aspiration, and unemployment in the Fens.

isaidyesnoyes · 12/09/2024 14:01

I haven't been to Wisbech in a while but I know it has some fine historic buildings and was once a centre of commercial activity and wealth. It's got high unemployment and deprivation now which leads to drugs and crime. Same in many places but the surrounding Fenland adds to the bleakness.

Just googled and an article said heart disease. He was only 45, looked so much older, that’s really sad.

@1AngelicFruitCake thats what struck me, how old they looked. The sister who was arrested also— if they’d said she’s 65 I’d have believed that, think she was early 40s. Drugs just ravage people completely.
I hope the young lad -Jack?- did get out. Join the army, navy, I’ve known people take live-in jobs to get out of a hole.

chrisquin · 12/09/2024 22:55

I found it sad that there were no recent photos of Eliza, or any explanation of how she'd got to where she was - disabled and a drug dealer.

Agree with this. The 2 episodes could easily have become 3 or 4 if Eliza's background had been explained.

It was an incredibly depressing watch.

Yes i wondered if her disability was related to her drug involvement?
A lot of drug users (heroin addicts) get ulcers on their legs. How was she getting hold of her drugs- this should be something the police should be investigating?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/09/2024 08:40

i was thinking the same @AutumnDays12

This person has 75 cameras?!?
But his house doesn't exactly look like the kind of house people might want to nick something from?!?

It was very depressing but such a good portrait of life for so many people today.
I was shocked at seeing when they told her mum too. It’s a very private moment and it felt wrong to see it. I know she must have consented but she died before this went out so I don’t know if she consented to exactly that moment or just a general ‘you can use footage of me’ type consent.

Webbymeister · 14/09/2024 22:32

Wisbech tho

Being that isolated I can imagine there'd be an acute awareness no cops would be likely or interested in covering a break in where he was. But yes, 75..

Stichintime · 14/09/2024 22:45

They all seemed pretty sad and odd to me. Her mother must have known what she was up to. Her friend described having to take his shoes off, because she was house proud. I didn't see any sign of that! A depressing watch, but also compulsive.
