TV PACE THREAD. NO SPOILERS AS IT WILL BE ON I-PLAYER

The BBC teases: "Nightsleeper is a real-time thriller set on a sleeper train travelling from Glasgow to London, while a government agency desperately tries to intervene in the rapidly-escalating events onboard.

"Can two people who’ve never met, one on the train and one not, work together to save the lives of its disparate group of passengers as the Heart of Britain service hurtles towards what might quite literally be its final destination?"

"Abby Aysgarth, the Acting Technical Director at the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, is finally about to take a well-earned holiday when she receives a phone call that will change everything - the UK railway network is under attack.

Meanwhile Joe Roag, an off-duty cop onboard and hoping for a quiet night. However, over the next six rollercoaster hours, Joe’s about to get anything but, as he and Abby battle both their own distrust and the unpredictable behaviour of the person or persons now in control, desperate to try and stop the Heart of Britain from reaching the end of the line, in more ways than one…"

Joe Cole, who's appeared in hit gangster dramas Peaky Blinders and Gangs of London, plays off-duty cop Joe Roag, while Alexandra Roach, whose screen credits include C4 drama No Offence and period piece Sanditon, stars as cyber security boss, Abby Aysgarth.

The series also stars Alex Ferns (The Devil’s Hour), Sharon Small (The Bay), James Cosmo (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), David Threlfall (Shameless), Daniel Cahill (The Control Room) and Lois Chimimba (Vigil).

While an impressive cast is completed by Gabriel Howell (The Fence), Katie Leung (Harry Potter), Leah MacRae (Rosie Molloy Gives Up Everything), Ruth Madeley (Years and Years), Adam Mitchell (Mother’s Day), Pamela Nomvete (Andor), Scott Reid (Maxine), Sharon Rooney (Jerk) and Parth Thakerar (Gangs of London).

How convenient that beardy bloke had a satellite phone. I’d be worrying about the phone bill though, calls can cost a fortune.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/09/2024 16:02

Makes you wonder why he had a satellite phone. Did he know the phones would be jammed - is he in on it

OP posts:
HotCrossBunplease · 16/09/2024 16:03

I think it’s quite realistic that a rig worker might need a satellite phone. I’m sure his oil or gas company won’t mind footing the phone bill when it all comes out what happened.

Totally bonkers and it all looks far too good (the train! Have they ever been on the sleeper? 😂 And the lovely sparkly nightscape filmed from above!) but entertaining enough. Can’t be any more implausible than a claustrophobic Suranne Jones trapped on a submarine!

This! The Scotland > London sleeper train is absolutely nothing like this😂

Also why did the "Acting head of Cyber Security" just not move carriage away from the annoying hen party?! And why did her friend (who allegedly works for them too so knows how serious the call was) go and join in with drinking champagne and singing and keep looking back at her like a child?! That would have pissed me off massively!

Oh and also spotted Trevor from Eastenders - didn't recognise him at first!

Argh I can't wait for tonight 😂

EveryKneeShallBow · 16/09/2024 16:10

On a tangent, do people “acting up” in a job always introduce themselves as “Hello, I’m Acting Blah-blah”. Surely for the duration they’re the Blah-blah, no-one cares whether or not it’s permanent?

MumofSpud · 16/09/2024 16:14

Gloriia · 16/09/2024 09:06

What were they wearing for their trip to morroco?! looked like they were in a Freeman's catalogue photoshoot.

Don't think dodgy cop is involved in the hacking, as a pp said he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and due to a previous as yet unknown misdemeanor will be suspect number 1 but will obviously come out the hero.

I like a silly drama though, as long as it keeps your attention and has you gripped and as the lights came on on the train and it fired up, trundled off sans driver it was a bit gripping.

Joe will get into the drivers cab, bring it all to a halt and being wanted by interpol will all be forgiven.

Edited

yes I couldn't get past that bomber jacket and the whole 80s feel go her - I know that's v shallow!

South. It didn't reverse.

surely it took a long time to get to Motherwell?
wasnt it heading north in the beginning?

Oh do they cost lots

the80sweregreat · 16/09/2024 16:38

They use satellite phones in very remote places. I remember a correspondent in Africa using one once on the news or in war zones , so oil rigs wouldn't surprise me. I do believe they cost loads.
I do need to watch the first part again though
It was very fast moving

the80sweregreat · 16/09/2024 16:48

She really should have told the hens to be quiet
They were winding me up ! lol

But why did her mate / girlfriend (who clearly understood how serious the hacking thing was because she works there too and even accepted that they're holiday wasn't going ahead) go and sit with them all and keep looking back like a petulant toddler being told they can't do something?!

I wanted to punch her in her smug face 😂

The sunglasses on her head! At midnight! In London! Even if she was flying to Morocco, it still would have been a nighttime flight!!!

😂😭😎

the80sweregreat · 16/09/2024 16:59

It had a strange vibe to it all round and looks like it's filmed through plastic at times
Definitely some American money involved too I think ( for production ) it had that feel to it
Her companion was an odd bod wasn't she.
A bit selfish

That is pretty common in the Civil Service, to be fair, they have a really complicated promotion/grading process and being an “acting” is quite common according to my mate who works there. In email signatures, at least perhaps not always stated verbally.

the80sweregreat · 16/09/2024 17:18

I was a ( very low grade) civil servant in the 80s / 90s and if someone was ' acting up ' as supervisor, they would refer to it as ' acting up ' in that role.
Did not know it was still a thing though.

Lellamir · 16/09/2024 17:23

I couldn't sleep, last night, so popped onto Mumsnet telly, for something to watch, and saw this.

I switched it off halfway through the final episode, when I realised I couldn't care less whether the train crashed, or not.

It was the soul baring phone calls that did for me!

Davros · 16/09/2024 17:27

butterdish601 · 15/09/2024 22:23

It's shit. Cringy script, awful acting. I am hooked though!

This!!

Halsall · 16/09/2024 17:57

That's for sure - when she looked out of the train window on the approach to Victoria she just happened to see Battersea Power Station, and not some run-down scuzzy street with a drab generic kebab-shop….

(Also, Alexandra Roach was in No Offence - she was Joy in the first 2 series, then got shot at the beginning of the 3rd. She was really good in it)

Strobbery · 16/09/2024 17:59

Oh it’s shite, isn’t it? But at the same time, kinda fun. I’ve watched two episodes and will continue tonight.
Whilst I love to see women in lead roles and playing senior figures, Abby is totally unbelievable isn’t she? No gravitas, steeliness, or authoritativeness. And her hair and clothes! Awful. I bet the poor actress’s heart sank when she saw her wardrobe!

Piggywaspushed · 16/09/2024 17:59

LetsHopeSo · 16/09/2024 09:46

I just turned it on by accident, not knowing anything about it.
Being from and living in the Glasgow area and regularly on trains to Glasgow Central, it's nice to see and hear all the familiar places and faces!😀

Not mentioned in the cast list, the train driver is Gavin Mitchell who played Boaby in Still Game!!
Also the male train attendant alongside Sharon Rooney, played Methadone Mick in Still Game!

Don't recognise the actor who plays Joe but thought the Scottish actor with the beard is more of a dish!

That was a twist about Joe! Also not convinced by Abby being so high up in cyber security although the overall head woman seems more authorative.

Nice to see James Cosmo and Sharon Small again. I will be watching the next episode!

OK, I am also from this area. I have been on hundreds of trains that stop at Motherwell. Did it not take an awful long time to get there!?

Strobbery · 16/09/2024 17:59

I’m also getting a bit worried about the battery on that satellite phone!

Piggywaspushed · 16/09/2024 18:05

The lead actress was so good in the drama about viagra. She's a bit wasted on this. Hope she doesn't have to spend the entire series talking at a phone.

Flossiecotton · 16/09/2024 18:13

Where are people watching xtra episodes. I could not see it on Iplayer.

the80sweregreat · 16/09/2024 18:17

I guess we have to assume that it took as long as it takes to get to Motherwell train station usually , but they cut a lot of the journey out for 'poetic license!'
( plus it was filmed on old disused Scottish tracks apparently, so maybe that's why it doesn't look authentic, or quite right ?)

familyissues12345 · 16/09/2024 18:22

Trevor from Eastenders!

Yes that's who he is, thanks @Starlight1979 ! It's been bugging me Grin
